The quality of all SNES Multi-AV cables is pretty bad in my opinion - lots of audio interference, and either no shielding or all cables are shielded together!

So I figured I'd try to hunt down someone who is manufacturing or supplying these parts in China, so I can make my own high-quality cables using decent quality SCART and BNC cables. But I've struck out - out of about 30 suppliers in China only a few have responded, and they either cannot supply the part (only full cables, without all 12 pins populated) or they want to make a new mould for me ($$$).

Has anyone got any ideas on where/how we could find a supplier for existing parts in China, or how we could go about building a community version?

All I can think of now is to find a pcb edge connector that fits, or get a custom edge connector made up.

I know of two people that bought the Multi-Out connectors directly from China, both refused to tell me their source. So it's out there. You just have to find it. If I was you I would send a message to all the suppliers on aliexpress/alibaba.

For example I would try contacting "Shenzhen Feizhen Plastic Mold Co., Ltd." ( http://feizhen.en.alibaba.com/company_profile.html#top-nav-bar ) since they already manufacture a wide variety of Nintendo AV cables, they probably have the molds and it's just a question of quantity.

Yep, I've been trying via Alibaba for a while now, but no luck so far. I've had the same experience - people in our community know where to find them, but won't share. Luckily that just made me try harder, so I've got some potential leads now - and I will bloody well share the info for anyone here to contact the manufacturer/supplier when I do find them: it's time to break this monopoly so that we can all enjoy High Quality Cables whether that means building it ourselves or via increased competition in the third-party cable space. Stay tuned...

Until then, here's a few official and third-party connectors opened, in case anyone is curious. Taking apart the official one can be done fairly easily and neatly - the third-party one was moulded shut so I had to hacksaw my way through to open it:

I want to solder my own cables direct to the connectors so there is no low gauge wire involved period, everything properly heat-shrunk and soldered as well as clamped. I'm working on some simple resistor/capacitor breakout boards with RGB pots so I can fine-tune red, green and blue voltage and have a calibrated signal from every source, displayed on calibrated CRTs. The goal here is to use off-the-shelf SCART and BNC cables, which we can all buy or find easily, with all changes happening at the console end of the cable.

The closest match from Digikey would be http://www.digikey.com.au/product-detail/en/EBC06DCWN/S3293-ND/927245 but that would still requires a lot mod work to make it work. The price isn't cheap too.

As for the third party cable that you cracked open, is that just a generic composite cable? Is it fair to assume all of them have every pins built-in? If so, maybe it's more practical to buy a bulk of these cables just to harvest the plug end and built custom snap fit housings for custom cable building.

All the official cables only populate the pins required, so yeah I'm having to combine parts from 2 to make 1 :( I've got enough for my needs, and I could get more official cables for cheap, but it's not really what I'd call a solution for us collectively.

Cheers for the part match - I should pick up some of the PCBs you and Helder made up so I've got something to reference. Once I'm etching some prototype boards I'll see what I can find out there, if I can't find the manufacturer or a supplier in China. A simple breakout board with BNC or screw terminals would be useful, that's probably what I'll be pursuing.

If all the pins are populated on the cheap 3rd party composite cable, I think I'll take a shot on building a housing. Seems like a lot of folks are buying ready made RGB cables only to have make more customization afterward. Might as well build something more easily configurable on the get-go.

Anyone ever source any multi out plugs??? I'd rather make my own rgb\bnc cable cheaply than pay out what they want for them ready made cables.

I got a message from someone wanting to buy the screw socket so he can do tests with his cables and he didn't like the price and complained about it and told me he sources the plugs for $0.35 each so there is someone out there who offers them. This person makes custom cables and based in the UK, I tried Alibaba but couldn't find anything on there.

I guess you would have to track down the factory that makes the cables (just not sure how someone would go about doing that). Ive seen the composite cables for $1.50 shipped on ebay. So $0.35 for just the plug sounds about right.

Thanks I only needed a couple, so I went ahead and got some of those cheap av cables. edit: well my cheap cables arrived, and they only populate composite. Think I'll just install some sockets.

I would like some proper, fully populated plugs myself. Having to mangle two of them into one just to get enough pins is a bit of a waste, and the ones I've found so far don't isolate all the pin positions properly (don't have plastic separators between some pins). Failing populated plugs, anyone have a solid link to ebay or aliexpress for av cables that at least have the RGBS positions properly isolated?
