i thinking about some small features for everdrive md, but cpld chip resources used on 99%, so i thinking about some "optimisation" by SSF2 support annihilation. i want to know, SSF2 support are really important?
I can't vote until I know what function you'll imprement as a trade-off for SSF2. So can you give more details about these new features?
I don't personally play SSF2 on the genesis, as I can play it on SNES. But since people will be able to choose if they want support or not (by flashing appropriate fw/os), I don't see a problem removing it.
I'd like to see it stay personally. Higher compatibility is always better than speed and other features.
Agreed. It's one of the games I am getting an Everdrive for also. I had it as a kid and would be kinda narked if support went away.
I don't own a unit, but it doesn't sound like a good trade. SSF2 is a rather major title and to exclude it just for "reset back to menu" or "Faster Flashing" would be a shame. Mainly because reset back to menu and faster flashing (as an example) are all luxuries which just make things slightly easier for the user. Moreover, they are things you usually do only once in a long while. On the other hand, loosing compatibility with a game has no recourse. I mean, you can't just "wait a little longer" like you can with slower flashing. You just can't play the game period.
Resetting back with buttons combination sounds very interesting. I won't have to get out of my armchair ever again. LOL
I'm interested on learning, if possible, of the technical reason why support for SSF2 excludes the possibility to do that. From my lack of knowledge, it seems rather curious.
altera mx2 cpld used on 99%, so i can't put new hardware features, but if i will remove SSF2 mapper from cpld, then i will take some free resources
I would agree that it really depends on what features would take the place of the SSF2 mapper. On the one hand reducing compatibility at all seems bad, but we are literally talking about 1 game which not rare or expensive. So I think if the features were good enough it might be fine. But I don't think that 'Return to Menu' or 'Faster Flashing' would be equal replacements for SSF2. What other features might be added if you had more CPLD space?
I personally think you should not trade off with compatibility, but I guess it depends on which kind of hardware feature you would like to add ? EDIT: If it is the SOFT RESET combo feature that is discussed on Sega-16, I say don't bother with that crap and keep SSF2 compatibility. Out of curiosity, how expensive would it be to upgrade the cpld version for more features ? Also, how much do you estimate the size taken by SSF2 mapper handling ? I don't know (I only emulated this feature in C, which I understand is very different from handling it on a chip) but maybe it can be optimized...
aprox 25% of chip used by SSF2 mapper which features can be implemented? i response on this question once. may be some else in future
Krikzz , I don't think holding buttons for reset is a good idea anymore , I just discovered that some games such as Primal Rage need you to hold 3-4 buttons while doing D-pad motion to excecute Special moves and Fatality moves.
I personally do not play SSF2 on the MD so I won't argue if the support got dropped. Also I think more room to put new feature in the Everdrive sounds interesting. Is it not possible to make 2 versions of FW/OS so that the user can make the choice of either SSF2 or new feature?
Personally, I like SSF2 support, but would be OK if there were 2 versions of firmware, maybe with SSF2 & without SSF2 but new features.
