You know, come to think of it, didn't the leaked near-complete version give Fay a direct front-view face pic? I think the 3/4 view in those screenshots looks cuter. >_>
The Starfox 2 mock-up was indeed Nintendo's concept but tentative. I remember holding the very same mockup in the EB ad at WCES '95. Here I scanned part of the of the product line-up featuring Starfox 2 taken from a 1995 "Play It Loud" WCES press kit:
I've been doing some research on StarFox 2 for an article I am planning to write. It seems that despite being a darling at the Winter 1995 CES (when the game was officially first shown, though rumours of the game had begun by mid 1994), the game was delayed for a 1996 release by May 1995, and officially canceled by November 1995. The 1995 Winter CES seems to show a nearly finished game, and I have no idea why there are rumors that the earlier betas that were leaked long about came from a trade show, especially when the game was not announced before then.
OK, I just thought it was a little generic for a Star Fox 2 cover...1996 release, huh? Not really that much of a surprise that it got canceled, since interest in SNES games was fading fast by that point. And holy crap, Comanche on SNES? Never heard about that one. I remember how great that looked on PC, but have serious doubts that the SNES could run it even with a SuperFX chip!
There's footage of Comanche running in full glory on YouTube. Linkety link. It's utilizing voxel terrain and seems to be running more than good enough by "SNES 3D Standards" (Also, iirc, the old cover art for the game hinted towards a "SUPER NES GAME LINK CABLE" feature... No clue how that'd work. If the cart would've had a port that could connect with another cartridge, if it's just a glorified XBAND feature, or if it was a cable that'd connect between the controller ports of two systems or something)
I have quite abit of Starfox 2 footage when it was first shown at WCES '95. I'll have to upload it so you could see how Nintendo didn't keep their highly anticipated IP under lock & key ( besides a piece plastic holding down the cart in a SNES console ) on the show floor Those earlier betas could've came from a game tester(s). Who knows...
If only I knew then what I know now I would've filmed Comanche alittle while longer than the clip you just saw . Sorry about that :banghead:
So that's your recording/encode/upload? Thanks for bringing out the only footage I know of Comanche. Say, out of curiosity, is it the footage that's so bad (and wobbly) or is it your deinterlacing + capture/transfer setup that is to blame? I just noticed that a lot of the stuff on the same account appears to be of very low picture quality, even by old YouTube standards. Just curious, as I invested in a tiny setup for transferring stuff of my own a few years back.
Well damn, consider me proven wrong! h: It doesn't look quite as good as the PC version, but for an SNES game....wow.
It feels kinda weird to realize that I remember hearing about the SNES Comanche (and its cancellation) way, way back in the day. IIRC, that SNES Game Link Cable was gonna use the expansion port on the bottom of the system or something...
You're welcome. Some of the video degradation is intentional. I have some plans with the footage with clarity on another site
You have some awesome stuff on your account. Always love seeing those promotional videos from the 90s...
Ah. Awesome. 'Cause I would love to see a lot of this stuff re-captured, re-encoded and re-uploaded in better quality. Dunno if you've seen some of the stuff I've uploaded on my YouTube, but some of the stuff I've fetched from VHS sources are of... <self-bragging>unmatched quality</self-bragging> I kinda want a new Hi8 player to capture from, though (as my current setup for cam footage is only so-so and has plenty of room for improvement if I can get a stand alone player with either component or s-video output, instead of relying on using a camera as the playback device... hooked up to everything like a digital frankenstein monster on life support)
You might consider finding a Digital8 camera, as they can playback Video8 and Hi8 tapes over Firewire.
Well thank you, 7Force ! I'm honored that you enjoy the channel. I was hoping my channel would become a place of nostalgia and educational to younger gamers who barely remember the early '90s ;-)
Yeah, i'm workin on it but its gonna be awhile. I don't mind people bragging at all what they've got . I welcome everything I haven't seen. It inspires me  I'll check out your channel.
Ahah. Just take your time. Looking forward to see stuff in the future. I'm long overdue on a lot of random stuff too. Life seems to've gotten in the way of a lot of random fiddling and fun over these past couple of years.
I've been doing a lot of research on StarFox 2 during the past few weeks, and I have found one of the three supposed "beta" ROMs (in particular the earliest alpha) is not actually a SNES ROM at all. I honestly don't know where that came from, but it ended up in Cowering's GoodSNES list and was distributed from there. Unless of course someone can come up with the third ROM which I do not have. Edit: BTW Herman, I found some Usenet posts by you, they really add to the archive.
Well, I finished up an article on Star Fox 2. I believe it covers pretty much everything there is to know about the game. http://www.snescentral.com/article.php?id=0077
