Is coke sweetened with sugar or with corn syrup in Japan? Also, is it still widely available in glass bottles or mostly plastic/aluminum?

I think it's corn syrup there too, which really sucks, that crap is really bad. The only big soda I've heard of still being flavored with sugar cane is the Dr. Pepper being bottled in Dublin, Texas.

Sugar from sugar cane is just as bad as corn syrup too, but both of those sugars are in just about every processed food out there.

Japanese coke taste different than the US type. In the ESSO petrol station they sell the US version for a 100 yen (normal coke is 120 yen) and it taste like shit ! Now I know why you guys in the US always say coke is nasty stuff. Far too sweet. I have no idea what they use in Japanese coke but I can tell you that it does have a different taste to the US version. It's also available in plastic bottles and glass bottles from stores

It would depend on the local distributor.

At least in the states we don't use those godawful beets like they do in europe. Makes everything taste funny.

You can get cola called "sugarcane cola" in the states. Soda with real sugarcane
tastes so different, it's quite good, though ferociously sweet.

I used to live in atlanta and as you guys know coke was invented in atlanta so... theres a coke musseum where you can drink coke from all around the world and shit... so, mmm, there was a presentation about coke, and the guy said that coke tastes different around the world because the water used is different and that changes the taste, and i also agree with that, because coke in mexico tastes alot better for some odd reason, and they also sell little cokes, about half the size of a glass coke and is also in glass, it tastes different to the metal/plastic ones, alot better.

There's this cola from Mexico (i think) called Sel Sol. I grabbed a case of that once, apparently it's a cola mixed with hops. It's non-alchoholic, and it's the nastiest stuff ever.

I usually stick to Mt. Dew... i drink a lot of it... like 3-4 cases a week... that being said, i think even that tastes nasty.

well, if you're dumb enough to drink tap water then you deserve it, and that urban myth is just bullshit, or maybe it's true in tijuana, that is nowheres land, and i've never heard of sel sol, so dont think is mexican.

Sel Sol is from Chile or some south american country or prolly from Central, which I wouldn't trust to drink because of sanitation being lower quality in most countries there.

Anyway, thet hing about water affecting taste is true, very true. So is where the soda is stored in - either in aluminum, plastic, or glass. Glass is the best really, i mean look at beer or wine, you don't see that bottled into plastic bottles for a very good reason... taste. It's the same with a lot of drinks. I can taste a difference from drinking straight from a can, to a plastic bottle, to the glass bottle, and even from either plastic or metal poured into a glass cup.

Other things I've noticed is that the fountain counterpart of Coke and Pepsi tastes a bit better (not too sweet), than the bottled kind (in any container).

I love glass bottled Coke. There was a little Mexican restaurant that would get the 16.oz bottles from Mexico where I live. It had been years since they stopped bottling it locally and as soon as I found out about them I went in and bought the whole place out. They must have thought I was nuts as I walked out with four cases of the stuff. The Mexican Coke does taste a bit different. My friends thought it was a bit on the flat side but I liked it.

Coke packages in glass will taste better 100%. It's the way the carbonation holds to the liquid in the glass, I am sure. Because in transport the plastic bottles are always flexing, it must do something.

The coke in small glass bottles is the best. It's hard to get, there's very few places to buy it anymore.

If you want a rare treat, I am sure you have all had root beer. It's not really made from roots, it's usually bark.

In the states, northern usa, you can get a treat called birch beer. Birch beer is made from the sweet birch tree roots, and is bright red, like transmission fluid (for lack of a good color comparison).

It's excellent. In the philippines, you can get sarsi, it's sarsaparilla. The us version is crap. Sarsaprilla is a real treat.

In nyc you get hundreds of sodas from around the world. There's even strange russian ones, and soda made from corn in south america.

I noticed the Coke in Mexico was also lacking in sweetness that you normally find in the US kind. I think it has to do with the sugar they use or something like that, I'm not too sure.

I think I know of the drink you're talking about ASSEMbler. It was served to me at a restaraunt that claimed to be old fashioned. I just remember a really bright red drink being served to me with a sweet flavor.

There's actually a store called the Soda Club a few blocks from here that still gets Coke in glass bottles and also stocks up on some weird drinks from around the world.

I actually love Root Beer and Sarsparilla too. It's great in a float. Root Beer is not popular at all in Japan, though. The import shops stupidly used to stock it in the alcoholic BEER section. Then, when I gave some to my co-workers and students, most of them hated it. They say it tastes like shoulder medicine (shippo). My theory is that anything made from roots (liquorice, root beer, etc), Japanese people don't like and say it "tastes like medicine" because they use Chinese medicine a lot (made from roots, etc.)

Anyway, on the subject of worst drinks ever, in Korea I bought a cola that was half-cola, half barley tea. It was interesting at first, but after a couple more swigs it started tasting worse and worse. NOT a good combination.

  16. ....Mmmm yum, I'm a big fan of ATF, birch sap wine is pretty nice as well. :110:

Im pretty sure this isnt just a PA only thing, but Sams Club sells them by the case. The only drawback is the member fee you have to pay :crying:

Also someone mentioned that soda tastes better in the "foutain" (drink dispencers at fast food places and such). Thats because they use different ingredients.

Side Note: Sams Club sells the thick syrup used in the "foutain" drinks by the case as well. and I agree, it tastes a lot better (even better than the glass bottles).

Sam's Club does sell the small bottles by the case but I think that is regional as well. The $12.00 per case sure beats the $6.00 per six-pack the regular grocery stores sell it for around here. Another regional soda I like (which thankfully started selling in glass bottles again) is Faygo. Love their Rock n' Rye soda and Red Pop. The Red Pop is probably too sweet for most though.
