Has anyone ever had a problem with DSP-1 game Super Bases Loaded II not working on their Super Everdrive Ultimate. I have Firmware 5, OS 12 and have tried a bunch of various roms. They all result in a black screen. I've tried those same roms on the ZSNES and they run perfect. Was curious what might be wrong. I've tried Pilotwings, Mario Kart and several other DSP-1 games and they work great. This is the only game so far that is giving me trouble. I also tried the japanese version of the game and that didn't work either. Any help is appreciated.
I also try setting the rom settings to ROM+SPEC or ROM ONLY. Then the game actually stars, but I get garbled video during the batting sequence which I assume is what is using the DSP1. Any other function including starting the rom normally gives me a black screen.
Since you've nicely anticipated just about everything else I can think of (e.g. trying the Japanese ROM), the only other thing that comes to mind: have you tried checking the ROM with BSNES? It's much less tolerant of malformed ROMs and that sort of thing, so if anything's wrong with the file, it may show up only in BSNES. Otherwise I have no clue, but I hope someone else can help.
Hi KRIKzz, you make great products, thanks for bringing them to us. Goldenband I'll check out BSNES, I had never heard of it honestly. Heard of the emulator ZSNES though and even tried it already, game works fine in that. As KRIKzz said it's probably a DSP mapping issue, though I am curious if anyone on this forum has had success getting it to play properly. But I've tried every rom, goodsnes, non-goodsnes, the website roms, foreign roms, etc etc. All the same thing, black screen if I try and run it properly, if I turn off DSP-1 with ROM Only or ROM+SPEC, it works until you get to hit, then the video is garbled. I assume, thats where the DSP-1 is being used. Thanks for trying to help. I appreciate it.
Just found this thread. It looks like Krikzz is right, and SBL2 uses a nonstandard DSP mapping. Unfortunately the link to the patch 404's, but it turns out to be in Archive.org (see here). I've attached the IPS patch to this post.
thank you I tried it on the standard goodsnes rom using IPSWin and it said patch complete. But it still black screens me using standard settings. Am I perhaps using the wrong rom, is the specific rom that goes with the patch?
The poster in the Tototek thread does mention that: Having said that, no idea why it's not working. It could be that Archive.org's archiving software corrupted it. Can "The Dumper" be reached somehow? Or is his patch around somewhere else? EDIT: Also, of course, Super Bases Loaded 1 doesn't have a DSP chip! :033:
This is first time someone has ever tried this game on SED w/DSP-1? I find that hard to believe. If it is this game must be terrible.
Hello, I'm a he, names Rob, thanks for all the help everyone. Yes I'm clueless as to what to try next, I've tried virtually everything that I could, all suggestions. It's just not working with Super Everdrive Ultimate on a model 1 Super Nintendo for me. Bases Loaded was a popular series on the NES, not so much on the SNES. I was 5 when I got my first NES and one of my first games was Bases Loaded II on the NES. Ever since then I was a fan of the series. I played Super Bases Loaded 2 on an emulator ZSNES, where it works perfect. I was enjoying it even on that and I generally dislike playing emulators, using keyboards as controllers. Be that as it may, if it can't be played on Super Everdrive Ultimate, it can't be played, not the end of civilization. I just thought I'd ask if anyone had any advice, help, similiar experience. I appreciate the advice, help and responses everyone has given. Thanks-Rob
Oh, then it might be less trouble to buy one. Likely you could get the cart under $5 shipped being what it is.
It sure sounds like that patch should fix things. Does anyone know how to analyze the IPS patch and see if it was corrupted by Archive.org? Or does anyone else want to try the patch on a different copy of the ROM? I'd help test, but my Super EverDrive doesn't have a DSP-1. The cart isn't actually that easy to find -- not that it's rare, but I definitely see it around much less than SBL1 or SBL3. I've been meaning to buy it...
Yeah few sports games hold any value loose... To satisfy morbid curiosity anyway, I looked into my last post's hasty suggestion. Ended up finding a potential example of that after all. lol. http://www.ebay.com/itm/220902367836
Hello, Thanks again for the help, yes its only about $5.00 or so. I probably will get it, I just figured if there was a fix, I should try and find it, ask around. Or at least find if anyone else has the problem which apparently no one else can test? A little surprising but not really a big deal. The SuperEverdrive Ultimate and all the everdrives are awesome. But if an official rom doesn't work, wether its the biggest game in the world or not. It should be brought up to the people who make it on a forum or whatever means of communication you can find. Maybe they can fix it. Maybe not, but at least it should be brought up so they know. I should mention that I also tried FW version 12's rom changing abilities...it allows me to take a clean rom and switch characteristics. Specifically, I can switch from lo mode to hi mode mapping or vica versa. Didn't work for this. Still got the black screen. Why the IPS patch of the rom doesn't work, I don't know either. I've done IPS patching before with success, so I know I'm not doing anything wrong at least. Robert mayhem13
Robert, would you be willing to contact the poster from the thread over on the Tototek site? Unless he's left the scene, I'm sure he'd be willing to help. Or maybe someone here could analyze the IPS patch and see if it's working properly. (Or someone elsewhere -- maybe byuu would be willing to help?) I agree that we should try to get all games working, and given that this issue has clearly been addressed in the past, it's all the more reason to do something about it. I guess we can't be sure that the IPS patch linked above will remedy the issue for the EverDrive (even if the patch isn't corrupt), but it evidently fixed it for the copycart under discussion. BTW, does the patched ROM work in BSNES and ZSNES? If it doesn't work in emulators then the IPS patch is clearly corrupt or mismatched, but if it works in emulation then maybe it implements some copycart-specific fix that doesn't play nice with the ED and needs to be changed.
DSP1 games are almost all HiROM mapping. However Pilot Wings, and apparently Super Bases Loaded 2 are actually LoROM mapping. If EverDrive doesn't support the original LoROM Pilot Wings ROM, then it won't support Super Bases Loaded 2 either. The Game Doctor SF series did not support Pilot Wings either unless you used a hacked ROM that was HiROM mapping. I think GoodSNES called it Pilot Wings (U) [f1]. Your game you should lookup Super Bases Loaded 2 (U) [f1] or [f2]. These should be hacked to run on the other mapping or DSP. Let me know if these work.
Hello MottZilla, already tried both f1 and f2 goodsnes roms, won't work. Black screen if I use normal settings, works if I disable DSP1 but then I get the garbled video during batter up sequences which is probably what uses the DSP-1 chip. So another words, it works just like the regular rom, not well. I have gotten Pilotwings to work flawlessly and in fact, I've tried almost every other DSP-1 game with no problems. Its just this one thats giving me a headache. Hello Goldenband, yes the game rom works in ZSNES without any fixing needed. It starts up, it plays fine during the batter-up sequences which is likely what is using the DSP-1 technology. In fact, looking at the ZSNES changelog, Super Bases Loaded II gave them problems sometime back in older build(s) of the ZNES program. But they fixed it, didn't really explain how, but clearly they did. since it works perfect on the latest ZSNES build. I will try to contact the poster on Tototek's site and see if that has any results. Thanks for the help everyone as always, I do appreciate it.
That's useful info, though actually I was asking if the patched ROM was working in ZSNES. I assume you tried the patched ROM in an emulator to confirm that the patch "took" -- yes? Obviously if it won't run in emulation it probably won't work on the ED. BTW if your computer has the horsepower, you should definitely consider using BSNES for your testing since it's by far the most accurate SNES emulator out there. Things that work fine in ZSNES will fail on real hardware, and vice versa to some extent. Of course BSNES won't address EverDrive quirks, but it will indicate with 99% certainty whether a given ROM is, in principle, functional on real hardware.
