I would like to point out this isn't a troll thread, just wanted to share some numbers with you... Out of the major Nintendo Mario games, Super Mario Galaxy has probably been the worst selling game of them all. Going on week one sales I have found the following... Mario Galaxy Sold week one sales Approx .28m. Number of Wiis in Japan is approx 3.8m so thats approx 1 in 13 Wii owners buying the game. New Super Mario Bros week one sales approx .91m. DS machines sold at that time was approx 8.5m so thats about 1 in 9 DS owners buying the game. Week two it sold .33m which is more thn Galaxy has managed in the two weeks it's been out... Super Mario Sunshine week ones sales approx .34m. Gamecube machines sold at that time was approx 1.49m so thats about 1 in 4 Gamecube owners. Super Mario 64 week one sales approx .29m. Number of N64 machines sold at that time was about .55m so thats over 1 in 2 people buying the game. Given the large number of Wiis having the lowest sales of the franchise to date is rather worrying. Still time to catch up... ;-)
To me, it just came at an awkward time. I want the game, but at the same time, Call of Duty 4, among other things, stopped me. (And I know those are JPN numbers, but I think the same point probably applies. Too many games this year!!)
I dunno why people wouldn't be buying this. If I could find a Wii it'd be the first thing on my mind next to Metroid. I dunno anyone with Metroid either.
I ll be fair here. I know of many many people who played and own the game, in backup form from the leak. Hence.. a part of the low sales is naturally piracy. People who "know" mario have been in the game for very long. The audience that mario attracts therefore is one that has a good amount of users with chipped Wiis. Mario will eventually sell very well in my opinion. Xmas is on its way anyway
In your opinion (or with stats if they exist..unlikely) what sort of proportion of Wii owners in Japan are the 'new' console onwers, ie not traditional gamers. As you know there are lots of people, of the non-gamers persuasion, buying into the Wii in Europe/US. If it was similar in Japan that could account for the low ratio as many may not have any affinity for Mario games whatsoever. (not that ratios like that mean too much imo)
If there is one thing I learned: Never trust Japanese figures for shit. Also keep in mind that the Japanese market is extremely different then ours. Games that are blockbusters over here barely sell over there anymore, and vice versa. Metal Gear, Sonic, Zelda, Mega Man, and Street Fighter are a few examples of major Japanese franchises in the west that do awesome in America and Europe, but do ho-hum in Japan.
Yeah, I noticed that with Twilight Princess... Japan didn't gobble it up like it was expected to. (Then again, that game had legitimate shortcomings.) As for MR GAY, I can only say that maybe more of the "same old" was expected? While the game probably doesn't revolutionize too much, it's still a rock solid adventure that's been steaming positive reviews from people on sites and message boards everywhere. Meh. Japan can stick it. (Read: Japan does not determine what Europe/NA/Australia+NZ like, does it? :3)
I agree with the point that the Japanese market is different, and the paradigm for gaming has changed since the NES/Famicom days of Mario. Regardless, when I played it at E3 this year, though only for 10 minutes, I really dug the game. Now that I have it, I'm really enjoying it. I did not like Sunshine at all. FLUDD felt too gimicky and awkward to me. Galaxy, as some reviews have pointed out, really captures the feel of the Mario franchise. I've played about 11 hours in the past two days. I'm finding it hard to put down, meanwhile I have four other games still in shrinkwrap collecting dust.
yet, mario party 39 was the top selling videogame a few months ago. The buyers are there, but they are fickle.
Go and get it! If you enjoyed Mario 64 you'll love it. Talking about Mario 64, it was a launch title which does account for the high sales ratio. Super Mario Galaxy sales will go up now that Christmas is coming.
I know that there are a lot of Wii owners who are the new owners that never played a console (or haven't since Pong or the Famicom) but still as New Super Mario Brothers did very well given the large number of DS owners who are part of the new generation and that Mario Sunshine outsold Galaxy on the first week despite there being under half the consoles there, I just found it surprising... Although people say that major franchises may not sell well in Japan, as a whole the Mario games usually do quite well (New Super Mario Bros was still charting a year after release...) and seeing the poor sales for Galaxy just made me wonder. I'm going to do this again in two weeks to see how well the games did after a month. As a side quest I've been counting how many people have been playing handhelds on the train. In the last month PSP - 9 Seen, 8 Male, 1 Female. Out of the males most were males in their 20s. Nintendo DS (fat or Lite) - 17 Seen, 6 Male, 11 Female. Out of the females most females were in their 20s to late 20s. 2 of the females were at least in their 50s. Others - Saw 1 Gameboy SP and this was owned by a 5ish year old girl playing a Pokemon game...
I'm not buying it  Nope, can get it no problem but I'm not buying it  Happy with my Bio Hazard Umbrella Cronicles for the time being. Yakumo
I'm sure Kotaku will be able to explain it to them. They're always up to date with the news! *slowpoke*
If you look at the SMG boxart, there are twinkles in these letters of the title: "u" "r" "M" "r" "G" "a" "y" In true Internet fashion, people threw an LOLshitstorm.
