sorry wasn't trying to hide anything...just didn't want to give anyones email address on the forum for fear of flood of questions...I'm not the one saying I've authenticated it was real or not...I along with dozens of others saw the auction...theres one guy who might be able to answer if it was real or not...please don't flood his box but Aaron Nanto of pcenginefx.com saw the auction as well...he's the most knowledged that I know of in PC engine stuff so I thought he might have the info...I don't bullshit...that s why you never see me on the board claiming to know some "secret" gaming bit of knowledge....I just happened to have seen this auction and thought that Aaron could help GSL...
I know Aaron... haven't talked to him in a couple of years though. I donated some cool goodies for the PC-FX portion of pcenginefx.com, but after scouring over there, doesn't seem that he's using them. Hmmm.... Would like to hear more... I assume this is an old auction? Not to ruffle feathers, but I doubt anyone's going to change their stance or opinions until some actual proof is visible.
Seeing an auction and seeing the item are two different things entirely. Anyone can fake a picture and an auction, and as some of us saw recently with a Neo Brikinger NGH cart, even reputable sellers can occasionally fake auctions and then end them with bids by their own second account. Hell, I faked a Strider HuCard on my PC Engine Secrets page. Since writing that, btw, somone sent me scans from a Japanese mag with more pre-release shots of what was purported to be SGX Strider. They were clearly not the same as the arcade or X68k versions, and at the same time better looking than the Genesis ones. This in itself is proof of nothing, they could be mockups or early game efforts or screenshots from any other release doctored to look different. If I find them I'll post 'em. Edit: Found 'em! Pic 1 (Sept '90) Pic 2 (Jan '91) Pic 3 (Sept '91) Note that at least one of those clearly says "Arcade version shown".
Links seems to be broken again... I could only see a funny 404 error... Anyway, I could confirm you that both Strider and Galaxy Force II were mentioned in the press conference NEC and Hudson held to show the system for the first time. During that press conference three games were surely shown as playable: Battle Ace (that was used to demonstrate the Power Console add-on), Daimakaimura and Madoo Granzort. Screenshots from Strider were also shown and one of those was the most popular one. Galaxy Force II and 1941 were also mentioned during that press conference. I also have to add that Strider and Galaxy Force II remained in the official release list for a long long time and all japanese PC Engine magazines listed both in their pages for at least a couple of years. Strider was in the release list until the SuperCD version was announced; then the project was transfered to the ArcadeCard format. As far as I know all rumors about OutRun, Afterburner II and Forgotten Worlds started from the US magazine Gamefan: I never found any other info about them in the japanese and/or UK press. Anyway, during that press conference there were mentions of enhanced games: Darius Plus and Darius Alpha were the only two that were released anyway it's possible that NEC Avenue made a press release about enhanced games with a list of planned titles. In my site I have pictures of the Power Console taken from that press conference if you are interested. I never heard of Dragonbreed for SGX: could I have more informations about it? Last thing: I think that the PC Engine 16bit system never existed! I suppose rumors of this started because Hudson and NEC were working on the Supergrafx and magazine tought it was a complete new system. A 32 bit system proto does exists anyway... but you probably know already...
Those pics seem to work fine for me, I can only assume the problems are all in yuur mind. One of the scans I have mentions Afterburner + Forgotten Worlds, so unless the Japanese mag got their info from American rumor-mongers there was probably a more official source for these titles. All of this really makes me think my theories are correct when it comes to the SGX: it was a stop-gap, not unlike the 32X, to keep Nintendo at bay until a real successor could be released. There's simply no other way I can imagine that no other games were released. It's beyond unlucky, and unfathomably stupid, to release a system with a mere five games, and only have three or four more in the pipe.
My site is: members.tripod.com/~faberp/ The pictures are here: http://members.tripod.com/~faberp/PC.htm Another interesting piece of hardware could be found here (it had nothing to do with it anyway...): http://members.tripod.com/~faberp/TJAW.htm NFG: The pictures are working fine for me too now! About FW and Afterburner: were these titles i the release list of any magazine or were only mentioned on the news pages? Anyway I don't think it was merely a stop gap: NEC and Hudson probably were interested in the system but the too slow start wasn't of help! the system was released at the wrong price (too high) and without enough interesting specs. And since the system was compatible with regular PCE titles, it could not be considered a system per se, so it has not only 5 games, but hundreds... It was a try, but not a good one...
Wasn't some sort of strider demo played in some sort of ... um.. convention, thing? Not really in my memory, but, I think I read that in a website. Then again, it might have been BS
I don't own one but like it very much, i'd like to get one. Similar to saome views here, I see it as a PC Engine Plus, it seems bizarre to me that Nec/Hudson would have wanted to produce a completely new machine at the height of the PC Engine's power, i'd like to know what their thinking was with the SGFX.
I own a SuperGrafx. with Ghouls N Ghosts. I don't have the original SG pad, only a PC Engine pad, and I have a Sega power adaptor to power my SG, not an original one. I was a bit disappointed with the SuperGrafx. I mean G&G is a fantastic game with awesome graphics, but it doesnt touch the arcade game and the sound is well below the Genesis version. I've played all the other SG games in MagicEngine emulation. I think Grandzort and Aldynes are great games, especially in terms of gameplay. I guess I am disappointed because the SG was meant to be so much more according to what I've read, and even in the SG's released form, I wanted Strider, Forgotten Worlds and Galaxy Force II which never made it out.. still, I treasure the SuperGrafx because of it's rarity and cool looks and it's exclusive games (Battle Ace, Grandzort, Aldynes) which you cannot play on any other system.
I have one....it's one of my top 5 favorite systems..(mainly because with the Super CDrom2 I can play every pc engine card/cd ever! and even turbo games with the adapter)...and it's one of the most unique looking systems ever....as far as abilities...not the greates system...I just have a soft spot in my heart from seeing those pics in EGM when I was 11.
of course own a mint and complete SGFX system with all the 5 1/2 games^^ but darius alpha is still missing :smt022 :-D
hmm... I though those hucard converter was designed to use JPN hucards on TurboGrafx-16 and Turbo Duo??? Maybe there's another type of converter that works the other way around? I had my SG modified to run both JPN and US hucards as well as country switch and while at it S-Video output as well along of complimentary composite & stereo RCA jacks... I saw my SG as the working unit so didn't mind bit of modification. f I ever come across mint SG box set I might pick that up for collection but till then this is my main console with my ever increasing PC Engine library... I did however recently acquired PC Engine Duo-RX in mint condition but I will never sell my SG coz it cost me way too much with all the mods and there will be no way I can recoup that amount... cheers
There are USA -> JPN HuCard converters but it doesn't excuse the fact that Japanese consoles need an additional mod to play TG games (or the games need to be cracked.)
I'm love my SuperGrafx. From the rather scary look (I think it might one day eat my Dreamcast) to the fact that I can play every Japanese Hucard released, I just think it's an all-around cool system. Then again, I'm a huge fan of the system that casual gamers forgot, as it seems like there's a ton of quality software out there that I'm learning more and more about every day. We won't go into the part about me not yet having a Super CD-ROM2 or that most of the cool games for for $$$, but the PC Engine in general is one of my favorite consoles, and I see the SuperGrafx as the pinnacle of that line. :-D
I own the system with all games except Darius Alpha (but one day I'll buy it for sure!). I enjoy it a lot but I keep it in the box because I prefer the compact design of the regular system. In the past I had the system connected to my Super Cd-Rom2 system and it was a cool setup! The system is RGB modified: I would like to buy a mint one in the future...
Due to shortage on space, mine is locked away into the closet. I haven't used it for some years now. But after reading this thread I'm thinking of plug it in again. I also miss Darius Alpha as most people. My SuperGrafx isn't mint. It's RGB modified but lacks package, instruction manuals and pad.
hmm... when you guys said RGB modified you mean like this? I've done mine with S-Video instead though... yea, my pimp version SuperGrafx baby! cheers
