So, i had Mandrake 10.1 for about 8 months, and i wanted to try something else on my newly built PC (nothing really terrible (Athlon XP 2000+ overclocked and recognized at 2600+, 1GB of DDR2700, A 160 GB HD, and An open AGP for future improvement)). I hated the fact that i could just pop a CD in my CDRom drive, And Read it, even if they say you can. So i checked for Suse Linux and discovered that one of my friends burned The Version 9.1 4 months ago to try it. I asked him if he could give me the CD, or burn a copy of it: "No prob". Installed it, Checked it and Tested it a bit. Wow. The Distro was holding on only one CD, but it felt way more usable and complete than Mandrake 10.1. The problem is, everytime i open 2 or 3 windows, or that i move too much with the mouse, it freeze. Everytime. I re-installed it, Used Yast to download patches and all, but nothing helped. Is this common? Is the Suse 9.1 that unstable? what about Suse 10.0? I just don't want to go back to mandrake after i saw how user-friendly and easier to use Suse seems to be, but i just can't make it work as i'd like to (in the sense that i can't use all the bits of power my system have now, or it crashes). Any idea, Recommendation, Anything?
i just want a distro that isn<t stupid. i want a something as useful as yast, i want something complete, i want something that will automaticly mount cds without any problem, i want good utilities and recognizion. I thought that Suse would do that for me, and it seems like it can, but i don't want to crash more than i do on windows. Does anyone else experienced this with Suse 9.1 ? Is Suse 10.0 DVD edition any better? I'm looking forward to Kunbuntu and Gentoo too, never heard about slackware, but it seems like a distro rough around the edges, if i refer to your reply, babu.
You want OS X! Heh, from my limited experience, and less limited friends experiences, SuSe is a nice option. Just download an iso and give it a go, see if it is more/less stable
i do have windows XP, and i still want Linux. I wonder why.. Yeah, i'll certainly give 10.0 a go, the only problem is that i only have DSL.... and downloading 700MB is a pain, i don't want to think about downloading 4.7GB.
Well, i must do that over two or three nights for 700MB... -_- I got a warning from my internet distributor that i was downloading too much, too. I guess i'll just look forward to ADSL.
Get Gentoo. Portage (the essence of gentoo) is the best thing since sliced bread AND the hoover damn. No more dependency issuse! It is an amazing bitch to install though, but if you can follow instructions you should be okay.
Yeah, i heard about that, and i'd like to give it a try, but the installation proccess scares me. I might be temptated to risk myself if i find a magazine with the Dristro and intstructions to install it. But is Gentoo distro evolved in the sense that it can easly detect what you plug in and out of it, if it easly automount external hard drives, cds and dvds, and all?
well.. if you like "put in cd and boot computer and click install" then it's not for you ^^ it start with the commandline where you have to partition, mount disk and then start the setup program
tried last week knoppix out some linux livecd that was delivered by a magazin as bonus iam kinda impressed when a os starts without trouble when you have not even one hdd in the pc but that could be my years of windows bitching =) the cd was from 2003 and worked kinda nice so i think i give linux another try on that spare pc thougt about gentoo since it sounds very interesting but how hard is it to install ?
If you try Gentoo, you need either another computer, or you need to print out the entire instructions first. I have multiple computers at home and work, so it hasn't been TOO much of an issue. The #gentoo IRC channel is off the charts as well. You gotta remember it's a BARE BONES install. You have to install just about everything if you're installing from stage 1. telnet, ftp, rsh -- stuff you think "comes with Linux". I still love it though. I've used Redhat and Suse, and I hate them both now.
I had Fedora Core 4 running fine untill about a month ago when I got a new PC and Windows XP 64 Professional x64 Edition on the go. There are a few CD's to install if you want every last package (there are LOTS of extras) and when I did the patches it did seem to take a while to install (then again the old pc was shit) but you can pick up Fedora from http://fedora.redhat.com I haven't used SuSe since around v6 (lol) so it's probably not even recogniseable any more but I can't imagine why you would be having problems. OS X is pretty sweet though so you may also want to try the x86 leak
I would say Fedora Core, Slackware or Gentoo (if you can install it...i couldn't...^^...but i've only heard nice stuff about if (but nog about the installation program). If you can't stand linux i would say Windows...=D Btw...the best thing for those that use Linux and doesn't want to try XP but want some easier installation and configuration tools (sometimes it realy CAN be a hell to install stuff in linux!) is OSX...the best from to worlds. =D (WinXP simplicity and a *nix system terminal and it's stable too..and virus free) And, most basic linux (terminal) programs works on it too...=)
i think i'll stick with the open source and legality, even if i'm temptated to try OSX on my new pc. in 5 or 7 days, i'll be connected to High speed internet, so i'll be able to download and test plenty of distros. Thanks for your suggestions.
Just tried to install Mandrake 10.1, wich was on my older system. Same problem. It froze during the installation itself, for no reason, in the middle of nowhere, while i was choosing how i would partitionate the HDD. i think my newpc have a teeth or two against linux  Certainly because of the hardware then, let me see.. AMD ATHLON XP 2000+ 1GB RAM DDR 2700 (1x512mb, 2x256mb) AGP 8X NVIDIA TNT2 model64 32MB On Board Audio Anything suspicious? May i mention i successfully (?) installed the Nvidia Driver on Suse? i couldn't on Mandrake though, i didn't even started to install the distro.. Damn, i hate when there's no aparent reason to explain why something isn't working properly. :banghead: what the hell is going on?
