I don't think anyone really cares about what apple does if you're a gamer. I don't know what the point of the ipad is I don't want one I don't feel I need one I think the whole idea is stupid as shit. But people are buying them. This thing plays games I've played some of the games on this thing, Not impressed with touch screen controls. Now of course the Wii U or whatever nintendo is going to call that piece of shit has a Tablet built in. Are they following a trend, setting one or just trying a stupid gimmick? Personally I don't think Tablets are a trend, I think they are stupid and pointless. What does everyone else think?
I've tried out several tablets and they left me feeling... meh. They're okay if you like to read a lot of digital books and possibly listen to music while doing so. Surfing the web is okay for the most part but the games are weak compared to anything else out there, past or present. The Wii U's controller seems promising to me, but will any developer deliver something great for it? That's what I'm waiting to see.
JXD S7100, 120€ I'm sure more Android gaming devices will come out of China (there are already the Yinlips and the JXD600 iirc). I'm also sure we wouldn't see those without the success the Dingoo had. If they'll become serious options for the average Joe is another question. I just hope enthusiasts will hack the shit out of them.
They are a trend, many people who have been casual gamers before (i.e. many girls) are now only playing on iPads or other tablets. I think stuff like Fruit Ninja/Angry Birds is fun for a few minutes, you can definitely have a good time with a friend. I enjoy playing it on my iPhone as well - BUT for me it does not, and never will, substitute actual video games. It feels like cheap internet games, thus I will never accept it as proper gaming.
Friut Ninja is the reason it own Kinect....kind of sad. But yeah causal games but full on replacement future of gaming? No
This. But the real tragedy is that tablets have the potential for proper games, there is just more money to be made with casual games.
Tablets have surfaced about every ten years. The input is inferior. While typing is better than it ever was before, it's still not great and the proliferation of ipad keyboards speaks volumes.
My main concern are the controls. Regardless of how good the experience is (and the Epic Citadel techdemo by Epic Games was breathtaking), the controls always kind of suck. They don't when it comes to games like Fruit Ninja, but except for maybe point & click adventures, you can't really translate complex controls into a simple "touch here and there" concept. They ported some great games like Street Fighter or 2D-shooters from the arcade onto the iPad and while it looks great and the ports are nice, it controls like shit compared to the original. If you could play it with a control-pad plugged into the iPad, this concern would become irrelevant. But if that's necessary why not just play it on an actual console... The typing got a whole lot better, however I still find it irritating and tiresome to type on an iPad. Sure, you get used to it, but it's really not ready to substitute an actual keyboard.
Heres the thing that makes me angry with tablets The screen would be perfect for adventure games, old-school RPGs and RTS like starcraft But go to any appstore and what you see? tons of craptastic FPS and racing games, and what are the innovative controls these games have? drawings of regular console controls!
Well, most racing games feature this motion-based control system where you have to tilt the device to steer left/right, or to control a jet in a flying game. Granted, this is pretty cool, but it still doesn't feel right to me. It decreases the control I have over the game because you can't focus that well on the screen anymore. But in terms of FPS etc, how would you implement a really great new concept of controlling it? There's not really a way around some kind of joystick-substitute if you want to keep it as interactive as a freely roamable 3D-world is meant to be. One idea would be to turn it into a rail/lightgun-shooter, where you just tip the enemies on the screen to kill them. But that would close the circle and we'd be back to the beginning: dull casual games.
The person that inspired this thread (same guy that inspired the radation threat and the paranoia threat) Actually bought an Ipod touch for...wait for it.......... FUCKING JEFF MINTER GAMES WTF
Yeah I know, but nobody plays with gyros anymore, not after seeing how stupid other people look when doing that. And having your thumbs on the screen is annoying as well, but my point is there are certain types of games that would play better on a screen than with a controller or WASD
A thousand times this. If any type of system is built, BUILT for games like Disgaea or Front Mission or awesome turn-based RPGs and Adventure games, it's a Tablet. The fun we could have with those! Just think about it! Front Mission, with touch controls, HD Graphics, wireless 2P! Phoenix Wright with Colour Manga HD Graphics, voices and digital sound! Final Fantasy Tactics, with more maps! And all the awesome innovations like multi-touch and gyroscopic controls would bring us new, awesome experiences:love2:!!! What do we get? Fucking unpushable buttons, and shitty disposable games about ordering cakes and jewels, and throwing birds. :-( Fuck this planet and species...
I've always hated touch screen for games, let alone actually playing on them. Not sure if anyone else does this but, when I play a game on the iPhone I tend to press the screen harder especially racing games, as I'm use to pressure sensitive controls. Bah, it's a stupid trend that many casual gamers and sadly most of them are women as someone mentioned. I doubt any hardcore gamers will really make the change to be honest.
I feel we are finally in the tablet age since the technology is actually fairly good now, and if you need a keyboard/mouse for something you can connect them wirelessly. I don't think we'll see laptops, desktops, or handheld systems disappear anytime soon, but handheld systems could begin to become the systems that provide more for the hardcore gamers. More and more casual games are coming to consoles, and casual gamers don't want a device just for playing games. I feel the Vita and to some degree the 3DS (even though there is a lot of shovelware and gimmicky games) will still be there for hardcore gamers.
I have an iPad and love mines. It's not a replacement for a desktop/laptop or your game console. I do a lot of reading of news, some eBooks, and PDFs. It's perfect for it since it's light, comfortable to hold. It's perfect for reading on the couch or in bed. It's also great for checking email quickly or to check a recipe or your account balance. It's not meant for responding to a lot of emails or writing a word document. I do enjoy games on the device but the games have to be designed with touch-gaming in mind. There are a lot of those games out there.
I haven't jumped on the tablet bandwagon and likely won't. Instead, i'm more interested in the new UltraBook concept. The thinness and versaility of a tablet, but with a proper keyboard, ports and a professional OS. Just the sort of device that I need for my travels and work.
