I have shopped for games at many places, and I have found hands down the best place to buy games is at target. (http://www.target.com/gp/homepage.html)

    Clearance:
Target regularly clears out PC games and drops them to incredible prices.
They drop prices no more than three times. They have limited space,
and you can get console games cheap as well.

    Today I got:
    Condemned $7
Dark Messiah of Might and Magic: $7
They had, but I did not buy:
    Civcity $7
    Guilds2 $7

Now that is what I call quality clearance. No "DOGZ" or "Barbie mansion".
Gamestop and other stores never go so low on clearance, I will tell you for certain.

Reason #2. Exchange, price match and selection.

Let's say we're talking about a new release. Say a new release like C&C 3.
I take the local adverts ,find the lowest price, and I go to Target. I buy the game, price matched.
If everyone has the same price, I just buy it outright because I know I will save money 90% of the time (read on).

I have 90 days to return, and unlike walmart, they have a great selection in PC game.
They stock a new release top 20 wall and the games are a great selection, whoever
picks the games is top notch, I mean, awesome selection for such a small space.

So what happens in 90 days?: Lower prices at target or another outlet.
So what do I do, given the price match period?

Match at Target or past the match period, I buy the other copy wherever it is cheapest.

Then I simply return it to target. I get a full refund of the original price.
    I have 90 days.

In some cases, this saves me over $25.

If you are like me and buy many many games, this is simply great.
It's basically a 90 day price match, and whever you couldn't afford
    is usually clearanced regularly.

I totally agree with you. I dont have a target in my town, but I regulerly travel to Lancaster (23 miles north west) to goto EB, GameCrazy, and I used to go to BestBuy.

I remember one time I went over to the target like 2 years ago and they had almost all their PC games at or below 5 dollars.

I got MechWarriors 2,3,4, and the exp pack for 4 for 3 bucks each!
I also got Baulders Gate 2 and Throne of Baal for 5 each.

And alot of the time new releases are the cheapest there. I bought Twilight Princess there on the Cube 3 days after its release and they had it priced at 39.99 new which was really great.

I'm sorry but I don't agree with all this returning stuff to get other stuff for basically free. This seems to happen an awful lot in the states from what I've read. Basically you are screwing over the shop buy buying something at full price then taking it back when they drop the price yet still get the full price refund then buy the now reduced version. Do people in the states really get such low wages that this is now common practice? Really, it's actually theft when you think about it. Just my view and yes I know practically no one will agree but that's how I feel.

I largely agree with you Yakumo, if you adopt a game when it's released you should be willing to pay the price it costs at the release, saving money is great and all but you can almost gurrenttee that if the system gets abused eventually they'll either change it or close up.

Buying games you don't own for cheap at clearances though, is always awesome.

While I do agree with Yakumo, I do think Target is an awesome place to buy games. Often 1st party GBA/DS releases (the $35 ones) are $5 cheaper than EB/GS. I also recently picked up the PC versions of Dreamfall and Sid Meiers Pirates! for less than $10 each.

No worries mate. I wasn't aiming at you

There's nothing at all wrong with buying stuff at discounted rates, I did it today in GEO with Super Paper Mario for only 4800 instead of the 5800 all other shops were doing it at. however I'd never dream of buying it at 5800 yen then taking it back in 90 days when the price drops to say 3800 yen then get a 5800 yen refund and go and buy it again at 3800 yen. That's just wrong and abusing the system.

Actually some GBA and DS games really do have MSRPs of 35USD.

Games like Pokemon (Emerald, Diamond, Pearl), Mario Kart DS, Animal Crossing, New Super Mario Bros... games that are SURE-FIRE sellers are given MSRPs of 35USD, 5 more than the standard $30 Nintendo usually charges for GBA/DS games.

However, EB/GS have a nasty habit of surcharging $5 for certain DS games if I recall... I saw Elite Beat Agents there for $35 instead of the $30 it goes for everywhere else! That's not the only game priced higher, there were others... Still, the audacity!

You can return pc games at Target? One of the main reasons I download pc games is to make sure they'll run on my slowly aging system, I always mean to buy the game if it works and I enjoy it but sadly my greedy side wins about half of the time. If I could return a pc game if I had problems with it I would be more willing to buy a copy. As it is now I don't want to(and can't afford) to pay out 50 dollars just to get a game that might not even start up.

Case in point Stalker. I really doubted my pc could run the game, but after downloading a copy and trying a few tweaks I was suprised to find it runs reasonably well. Part of my says to buy a copy, but the other part says that's a lot of money for a game I'll probably never play again. It's a fine game, but doesn't offer much incentive to replay. If I could have bought a copy knowing it could be returned I would have, but until now I knew of no stores around here that would do such a thing. I'm going to call target and see what their policy is.

I actually don't see why most stores don't allow people to return pc games. It might have made sense back when it was faster to copy your own floppies then download them off a bbs, but I would say most people who want free games would rather download a copy with a crack then have to mess with making their own image and hoping they did it right.

    Money is money.
If you wish to spend more of it, do so.
I choose to save my money.

If I save $200 for one year, and that goes into a safe, boring ira with AVERAGE market compound interest, in ten years that is $431 on a one time deposit with no addition.

By the time I retire, that $200 will be worth around $2350

If I do this every year, my pocket change earns me nearly $32,000
by the time I decide to retire.

So spend the extra cash or have $32,000 for when you want to stop
    working and travel.

    Up to you.

Well I guess since you live in a country with no pension system to protect the old you do end up with people screwing others over to save money. Can't be helped I guess. Myself, British and Japanese pension so I'll be pretty well off when I'm an old bastard

Well I'm a poor student, so I do what I can to get cheap games...
...But I'm in Canada, so there are about as many Target stores here as there are people who like Donald Trumps hair...
    ...ie none.

I dont do the "return" thing but Target DOES have a nice selection of games and cheap prices most of the time. I mostly buy my games from the BX/PX on miltary base, best buy, circuit city, walmart, and target. I barley buy from EB or GS.

Yakumo how does the Japanese pension work for foreigners? Since you're married to a Japanese did you have to give up your uk citizenship?

This post is 'pure' piracy, much worse than taking back games to save a few $, strange no one has commented on it though, does that mean this is an accepted practice?

Agreed. Question is do I delete it or just point out that we support
    developers by buying games.

I'll just point out that the reason why it's $50 and you can't afford it is because people download games...

If everyone just bought the game it would probably be half the price..

Yakumo: more fool the American shops for having suck a slack policy. Software is usually excluded from the customer's rights to return a product (certainly in the UK). In our shop, if someone brings back a PC game, we will only accept it as second hand, and give them its current worth. If a game requires a key to play online (Battlefield 2, WoW etc.), we will not accept it.

Mr. Saturn - the developers and publishers are also concerned as to whether their games run on your PC. That is why they print a mimumim AND recommended spec on the box. In a lot of cases, they will offer a free demo on a magazine disc, or to download from their site. They also submit video footage online, and give out promo copies to magazines for review. I would rather see people use these officially sanctioned methods of evaluation, rather than adopt a "piracy is OK as long as it is just for testing purposes" attitude.

Yet another good post, spot on m8...Like you say if a store has a slack return policy more fool them in most cases...Being as you work for an independant I know you can appreciate this fully, and I can understand your viewpoint.

...And yeh, 'testing' instead of buying cuts no ice at all otherwise places like yours would be dead within days :-(

Yes, indeed! With the consoles, we are somewhat more lenient.... if someone buys a game new and returns it the same day or next, and says it wasn't what they were hoping for, then we may well offer them something else for same value, as long as it is perfect and we could resell it as new. With PC games, this is difficult. There is the possibility they copied the game, serial key etc. - and we can't be distributing serial keys to more than one person!

I am very surprised stores in the US have such an approach. I remember seeing an offer for trade-ins from EB Games, and the small print read "no sports games" hehe!
