We Americans like our consoles big like RAP and big bootylicious ladies! I agree that the console was just expanded for American tastes. It had to be bigger than the competitors because it was a lot more expensive. I still swear the NES was made to look and work like a VHS player so people would regard it differently then the ATARI that died out so violently. I would kill to have a new wood grain console released and an HDTV that came in a wood cabinet. Maybe some old rough 70's fabric that covers the speakers. (were these kind of TVs popular around the world in the 70's and early 80's?)
That is exactly why the Famicom was redesigned. Nintendo wanted their new system to look like a something modern that would set next to a VCR or Laserdisc player. Anything but a videogame console. In hindsight it was probably one of the smartest choices they made at the time. It would ba an easy enough project for a woodshop to make a retro style wood sleeve that a flatscreen could fit into.
Reminds me of the van my parents used to have when I was a small tyke. This Dodge van had shag carpet inside and some seats that folded down in the back in to a bed. Actually now that I think about it - I don't want to remember that van because I'm not sure what my parents did in there.... :banghead: A. Snow - I will have to have a carpenter rig me up something. Tatsujin - I need to find a way to make that animated gif my wallpaper on my PS3.
I definitely agree that it was all marketing, having spent a lot of time modding these systems. The TG16 pcb is almost entirely wasted space. It's almost funny. Components are spaced so far apart for no reason. One side of the board is almost entirely unused, unlike the PCE. There is however a spot for a tiny extra built in rom (that was never used). They may have been planning on including a built in game or something. Personally I just think that the guys designing the PCB were just trying to use up the space
Agreed. I've always thought of the NES as timeless, while Famicom seems... Tacky 80's plastic. It looks cheap.
It has a timeless look about it when I see someone blowing in to the slot or the console missing the top of its case because the pressure insertion no longer works.
I was under the impression that we weren't a bunch of 1337-speaking haxxorz here, but maybe I was mistaken.
teh is not just ordinary 1337, it is also the most misspelled word in english language. so it sometimes just can happen (!)
Some people use l337 speak ironically as a nod to being on the Internet. Unless usage is excessive, what's the big deal?
I prefer the term "grammar nazi", myself. Grammatik macht frei. It irks me to read it, same as unsubtle references to Internet memes. There are plenty of places where that kind of thing is practically required, and that's great. I just don't see why it's necessary here. I'll stop derailing the thread now, I guess.
