I hated the original xbox just for its size untill I opened one up and realized that all the space really was taken up. Stupid 3.5 inch drives. Also the other night I was walking to the kitchen to get a glass of chocolate milk(mmm choco milk) and I kicked my foot into a wall and my pinky toe has been purple ever since :[
Not really, there's plenty of room for reduction. If you want to see a nicely compact system, open up a Gamecube.
It doesn't really look like theres room. The hard drive and DVD drive look like they take up the whole top of course, and then under that is the board which is about the same size as the drives. How could they reduce it?
Custom drive mounts and smarter use of the space. The Xbox is set up like a PC, or a rackmount. For consoles everything should be custom and compact.
the GC is a marvel of RnD and save a few EXI related and rare bugs the hardware was good enough to get a second round with the Wii. The GC is so efficient and balanced that it's my favourite/smartest piece of console. Coding on it is mostly painless too even at lower levels.
i beg to differ. the NES is a masterpiece of engineering. how they fit all that processing power into that amazingly grey case is modern marvel.
