It's not a trick; the MD can interlace its video. Sonic 2 uses "Interlace mode 2", which provides 448/480 scanlines.
Yeah, there are three output modes in megadrive... Normal, InterlaceMode1 and InterlaceMode2... If i'm not wrong, mode1 is able to double vertical rez keeping actual layout (so screen appear same, you have to use software trick to effectively get something like splitted screen or something else...) and mode2 remap scrolling layers to 8*16pixels tiles instead of 8*8. Most method were quite viable, especialy mode2, too bad not much games used them, for title screen at least .
There are some more pictures about Hi-Ten Bomberman : Ccovel : 2 pictures of my Tsushin Booster with the Tsushin Tool. I don't win it on Yahoo. The Tsushin Booster on Yahoo don't have the box. If you want more picture I can send it to your email box.
I have no idea how the tile layers are displayed in interlace mode, but if the MD is a good system, I would assume it makes no difference to the BG artist. The MD hardware ought to use a normally-laid out BG, and have the hardware do the interlacing and subsequent image squishing (for lack of a better word).
As i explained, one mode allow major tricks to be done (like splitting screen) and the other mode is just real 320*448 interlaced display (so the tile source become 8*16pixels instead of 8*8, this include a slightly programming difference).
Right, but if the screen does the "squishing" it will be a similar effect to all the bullshit ports we've gotten lately (Taito Memories, Sonic gems, etc.) The machine shouldn't be doing any resizing of bitmaps (which it has to do when it interlaces a 240p output). Looks like shit on a stick. Which mode is this in in Sonic 2?
