This is one of those moments that a topic hardly need any words, enjoy: It's planned for digital release on PC, Mac, Linux and perhaps even OUYA! http://kck.st/13O5y1B
Looks good but would rather play the existing classics at this point unless this brings anything new to the table
Midway arcade tribute racing with cancelled Blur 2 engine should be awesome, it looked like as crazy as California Speed.
If they get the game physics right (something like Daytona USA) and have a good multiplayer system, this will be interesting. The whole Scud Racer vibe is cool, but that alone won't be enough.
Scud Racer is cool but why do a kick starter for that when fixing the model 3 emulator would be time much better spent. I mean, we can already play Scud Racer on a PC so a remake of it isn't really worth it plus you have the copyright issue.
I see. But I'm wondering if many of these Kickstarters are just a way to scrounge cash. I mean, 10'000 pounds is a lot of cash. I know he has to write the engine but most of the art assets will be ripped from arcade roms I would imagine.
No, I dont think he is ripping anything. He is the same guy who made one of the Sonic 2 remake demos from scratch. Kickstarter has started to clamp down a bit and made it clear that there are legal expectations of it all. If he was found to be ripping assets, it would be completely shut down.
Thats good to hear. But one guy doing all the art for a racing game? That is an awful lot just for one guy to do but I wish him luck on the project.
Writing/fixing emulator and a game are completely different things. Many talented game programmers will be unable to write a good PSX emulator. And there's no copyright issues - different name and no licensed cars.
If he uses the same track layouts then that is a copyright issue. There's also the likeness issue that can cause problems if Sega want to be arses over this. Remember the big shit storm between Capcom and Data East when Street Fighter was popular? Then there was the remake of Chrono Trigger in 3D although that was using the same name as Square's game.
What Data East did was legal. The Chrono Trigger 3D remake was not. Basically, you can copyright specifics (track design, cars, etc.), but you cannot copyright a style of play. So a remake would be prohibited. Using art without permission would be prohibited. Using tracks/cars without permission would be prohibited. Creating a new racing game in that arcade style would be OK.
Yes, I know that but the tracks in his screen shots looks like Scud Racer in design as does the car. Also, Data East lost a court battle if I remember rightly to Capcom over Fighter’s History. I'm not knocking this guy for his efforts. A really good arcade style racer in the theme of Sega Blue Sky gaming is a fantastic idea but I hope he doesn't run in to legal issues. Playing this on the big TV would be amazing. I already do with Scud Racer but just imaging a Scud Racer style game with modern day graphics! Oh man, that would kick arse.
