The beginning of the End for game media? The 360 gets its very own Virtual Console, with original Xbox games to be added to the Marketplace. The first available games include Halo, Fahrenheit, Fable, Crimson Skies (wonderful!), Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath Of Cortex and Burnout 3. Each of those will set you back 1200 Microsoft points (USD$15). This really comes out of nowhere: I tought they where going to emulate some lesser games before this, like some DC ones, or late 90s PC games like HalfLife. How long until most (if not all) games are download only? next gen? Source
Microsoft is going to have to work really hard to get this going. The games listed so far were already compatible via it's emulation. Anyways I am glad ms is also jumping on board and trying to be a little reasonable with the price (but if you ask me, they should say *k u to sony & nintendo by posting ames for $10 each). Sadly tho I bet you could easly find thies games on disc for $15.
MS already tried to send that message with both Xboxs just to see the inferior quality PS2 getting most of the market and the overpriced Wii sell literally like bagels in a jewish neighbourhood. The results? a $4 billion hole and red numbers with both units...
Some of those titles were being offered free to anyone who bought the Xbox at certain retail outlets in the UK for £50 when they shifted their remaining stock. MS are competing with a huge second hand market on those (and most other V1) titles.
They've been saying this for ages... not just w/ games. Internet was supposed to do away w/ the newspaper. I don't know about you guys fucked up neighborhoods, but mine is filled with them. Next thread please!
Mind that those used games at $15 or less dont represent any profits for MS, while these downloads are pure revenue with no middle man (retailers and such) in the way. After piracy the 1st issue for VG companies is finding a way to get into the lucrative market of used games. Making games download-only destroys the used market and sends profits directly to the publisher. And the reason why the 'Net hasnt replaced newspapers is simply becos news companies (both old and new) couldnt find a way to profit from online ads as much as they do from regular printed ones. Its all about the money dude...
Wow, me and Henners were talking about Halo 1 being an arcade game or something too, too bad it isn't online supported.
People will always want a physical copy of something. Most people that download music burn it to a disc so to have a physical copy of it.
Yeah, just look at all the people who buy music off of itunes. The ones I know laugh at me for buying CD's, and I don't think burning them to a CD-R is the same.
You know, I really wouldn't mind this at all if they added features (Like widescreen support) and cut down on load times. I think its a good idea, personally, since there are some games that are too damn hard to find. Also, I wonder if they will add achievements? That would be pure awesome and would make me look into buying titles like that. Sony better keep up, since they have barely even released any Playstation titles for the PS3/PSP.
This is retarded... I don't think any of those games cost $15 to buy the physical copies. Hell, Crimson Skies costs like $2.
Hopefully this means a new BC update too...Fable and Crash really do not work well at all. Fable is choppy and Crash has messed up graphics...plus it isn't that good, lol. I miss Crash 3.
When hell freezes over. Downloading games, for the most part, is a nuisance. What happens if the content on your hard drive is deleted and you don't have a backup? Download-only gives the publisher way too much control over copy-protection and that sort of thing, and I don't think many people would be pleased with that.
Well like most of you I really like collecting videogames etc, however I also like downloadable-games like those on XBLA. No disc swapping and fast loading times. So I'll probally re-buy some xbox1 titles just for that reason.
I completely agree, I love to collect games for the packaging and manuals etc but anything that allows me to play classic games I love faster and with no console switching can`t be a bad thing.
The fact is loads of gamers are collectors? See my comment about "they've been saying this forever". Next thread please!
