Just saw this robot do a perfect synchronized Enka dance with two women on TV. The movement of the robot was perfect ! So smooth !

When the presenters of the show asked how much it cost to make and invent the robot, the guy replied that you could buy 10 houses with the money it cost to make it. As you can see from the pictures it's pretty tall. Makes Honda's and Sony's robots look like slow moving lumps of metal.

Notice the security guard in the background behind the woman on the left? This must be one impressive bit of kit to have security on the show. This program has featured expensive items before without security.

:smt043 yes it does :smt043 That's exactly what I said when it came on thinking it was some toy until it started to move.

yeah but is that robot a preprogram running "it" or does it read and recognize surfaces and jog like the asimo? Asimo isn't quick but it's technically amazing as it calculates unknown landmarks and determines distance and terrain to decide the risk of the path to be traveled.

qrio's pretty cool but much more of a gimmick...

    That's a good one, Alien Workshop. ;)

These robots nowadays are astounding. Hell, the new version of the Robosapien (not the v1) coming out later this year can even do an impressive lot all things considered.

    Good times we live in.

that robot does have a program in it but like Asimo it can use it's "Brain" to think for it's self. The Enka dance was done by it watching a monitor in front. What it saw on the screen is what it mimicked. The screen just showed a wire frame model though. I guess it can't see real people yet.

Yes! Loved the films as a kid, they helped gain my interest into robotics. Currently working on improving robot design - one of the main problems with robots is they a) need a reasonably powerful computer and space to carry it b) to be well balanced, which isnt easy with a bulky cpu for yer ass. Anyhow here is what I believe the future holds and what I am experimenting with:

A primary main computer (server), the brains of the droid, maybe even a super computer in a remote location separate from the body. A powerfull but small computer (ie a workstation) is all thta would be needed onboard the body. The server does all the main calculations for the physics and thought etc then transmits them across a wireless network to the workstation which merely executes the instructions. You get the advantage of having a lightweight portable droid with serious brainpower (which in turn will give better speed for movements etc due to faster calculations) and being able to control the body from a remote location whilst having the body itself greatly reduced in weight and easier to balance.
