Actually... over here in Germany there are protesters on the street condemning the use of atomic energy (60.000 people in one place yesterday alone), they are starting fundraisers for Japan and wondering what the impact on the global economy will be.

Just FYI, everybody here is scared as hell since our chancellor said on TV that Japan has the highest experience with earthquakes and a very high technological standard on par or even surpassing Germany - and if they can't build reactors that withstand an earthquake that's something to worry about.

I've not heard any negative banter towards Japan from anyone in my Country. But Responses like that from Japan-Games will probably serve to fuel a few.

    @BarC0de

    Touche.

still no news about the reactor...NHK is still talking about the tsunami.

I guess people must be really scared about the possibility of a major nuclear disaster.

    How about the food shortage?

I will check with the local japanese embassy and see if there is anything I can do (like bring some food or sth... I doubt there will be any help effort down here in Uruguay, but it's worth the check)

Blackouts starting tomorrow. My house isn't affected, but my partner's workplace is.

Shinjuku was a ghost town tonight.

It was the largest earthquake ever in (recorded history in) Japan. That was not really the main problem; the tsunami caused more devastation that that. Furthermore, these reactors were near the end of their lives. They are from the 70s.

Furthermore, what on Earth do people think we should do with regards to power? Do all these people against nuclear energy want to give up facebook, nternet, iphones, electricity, cars (manufacturing)?

We can't run on coal and oil for ever!

It's physically impossible for it to be like Chernobyl. Either way, it's really shit. I think they are going to drown all reactors. The magnitude of this decision is enormous. The cost is enormous.

Well, I read that Reactor 1 (the one which the building exploded) was due to be shut down in late March of this year anyway (just a few weeks away). So "killing" it isn't a big loss.

The other 3 (4, 5?) reactors they are having trouble with however would be very dramatic if they resorted to "killing" them.

But the cost of a catastrophic meltdown is FAR greater than the cost of losing a few reactors obviously.

Aside from all the horrid stuff. Is no one excited to see what Japan make when they rebuild the areas? Anyone say city of the future?

Oh, I'm sure he meant about the overall cost of the disaster, not just the plant incident.

I'll think about that silver lining once the devastation stops first.

They will probably rebuild the areas as they were before the tsunami's.

Unless they manage to copy the Soviets each and every mistake then no there won't be another Chernobyl. Will the place around the reactor be pretty damn radioactive? You better believe it, at least if containment is completely gone at some point.

Man your response makes me realy sad... there are many germans here including me.
And no, you wont find many or non responses like in that Picture from germans because we dont have any reasons to do such shit. (even americans have NONE reason but still write such shit)
It is terrible what happens and most ppl here are very sorry for Japan.

It would interest me why you hate germans? Dont tell me because of WW2!?!
Education is the key... maybe for you too.

Japan-games was trying to make the case that responding to that image saying "it's no wonder everyone hates Americans" is as racist as saying "let's hate Germans/Chinese/whoever". Apparently people missed the point. I don't think it's a particularly well-made point anyway because the issue here isn't that these people are American - it's that they're bigoted, jingoistic arseholes with barely a shred of conscience or compassion among them. Every country has such people, unfortunately.

Duh. :) At least that is what I got from his post. Hyperbole doesn't seem to translate well into text.

Probably what the Soviets told the Brits back when too. I'll let a local with a geiger counter tell me for sure as the amount of information coming out leads me to believe a shitload is happening that they aren't telling us about.

The new hippies, most of them rich kids, dont give a damn about what we're supposed to do without fossil and nuclear

Fuck! they are too retarded to even think about the implications! after all these idiots pretend the whole world goes organic, even though the most conservative estimates point that only 2bn could be feed using organic agriculture, and at subsistence levels, not current ones!

On the prospect for japan, the bright side is that they might have a big opportunity to repurpose certain areas of the economy they had been dragging since the 80s, let alone building state-of-the-art infraestructure, like those completely sustainable buildings in germany.

Nothing will bring the dead back though...
