why doesn't the government just issue everyone a ton of RadAway?

EDIT: Oops, I forgot it's addictive. That probably wouldn't be a good idea...

Don't worry, in the 30-or-so years between Fallout 2 and Fallout 3 they fixed the addictiveness 'problem'. :p

TOKYO — The earthquake and tsunami that pulverized coastal Japan crippled a bank's security mechanisms and left a vault wide open. That allowed someone to walk off with 40 million yen ($500,000).

The March 11 tsunami washed over the Shinkin Bank, like much else in Kesennuma, and police said between the wave's power and the ensuing power outages, the vault came open.

"The bank was flooded, and things were thrown all over. It was a total mess. Somebody stole the money in the midst of the chaos," said a police official in Miyagi prefecture, where Kesennuma is located.

The bank notified police on Tuesday, 11 days after the disaster, said the official, who spoke on customary condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to the media.

In the immediate area for the time being anyway, the money is somewhat useless. But afterwards...

Yes, apparently radiation levels are now past the point that is safe for infants, but within safe levels for anyone older. Kind of scary, as I have some friends here with newborn babies.

I would never drink the water in Tokyo out of the tap anyway. If you boil the water would that clean it up a bit or is it a whole different story when it comes to radiation?

Actually, I find Tokyo tap water to be quite decent, considering it's a major metropolitan area. I'm not sure if boiling water does anything to get rid of radioactive material -- I better research that!

By the way, Yakumo, I see you are down in Shimonoseki. Has any of this stuff affected you?

I kinda thought of that too.. It's quite "un-japanese" to do crime in hard times..

Nah, life is normal for us. If it wasn't for the news we wouldn't even know anything was wrong. Yamaguchi is a pretty safe place to be. Next to no quakes and land is high so no real danger from a Tsunami unless you live by the coast. Where i live , no tsunami could reach us unless it was one 5 times bigger than up in Fukushima area.

Originally I'm from Liverpool in the UK where we got drinking water from the lake district so I'm used to very nice tap water. Shimonoseki is quite similar since the water here comes from the Yamaguchi mountains.

I think aeration of the water helps get rid of the ionized radiation the same way radon is removed from water. But why aerate in an environment that already has radiation in the air?

There's nothing wrong with the water in Tokyo; it's nicer than the water in Manchester, that's for sure!

Boiling won't do anything to the radioactivity. These would work though.

I agree with you on that. Manchester's water is shit. Strange when you consider it's not that far from Liverpool. The water in London had a nasty bitter taste I always thought plus left lime scale in the kettle.

Filters only filter out radiation in the form of minerals that can be filtered out. This isn't the case as the wikipedia page doesn't mention how effective it is against radiated water.

This might help. Read towards the bottom.

Glad to hear life is as normal where you are. It's fairly crazy in Tokyo, but absolute devastation in the northeast. I used to live in Sendai, and it's crazy to see that city so ravaged. Thankfully all my friends up there are okay, though.

Good to hear that your friends are ok. I was watching on TV just before about the announcer who gave the warning about the Tsunami. She was still giving the warnings telling people to flee even though the Tsunami was already there. Her parents escaped but she didn't. Her parents said that they are so proud of her giving as much warning as possible to the people but wish she had gotten out sooner. A real sad story and just one of the many I've seen on the TV over the last week or so.

That's a joke, as it's what some Japanese people have actually said (on TV, no less).

Never drank a glass, myself. I'm assuming boiling will not do anything to the harmful materials found in it.

Wow, that is a terribly sad story.
