Hey kids, remember the absolute silliest genre to come out of the 90s? No, not mascot platformers, but FMV "games", where most had limited to no interaction? Remember those? Your Sega CD does. Now the most famous out of the whole genre has a kickstarter for a remake. That's right, who wanted a new version of Night Trap? (Nobody? I'm shocked) I think the most tasteless part (besides the nostalgia gouging) is that the "star" of the game, Dana Plato, died of a drug overdose 15 years ago. The whole thing just seems kinda wrong.
I've always wanted to play Enemy Zero on the Sega Saturn, never got round to it though, been saving it for a rainy day I guess. On the subject of Night Trap, that thing is probably left where it is.
Watch that get funded. Even though I don't think it will, watch it happen. People have funded sillier things before. A bunch of threads on here are testament to that. Although part of me wonders what direction they would take it in. Not curious enough to shell out money, though.BTW, the absolutely lowest would be if they HD remake Custer's Revenge for the Atari 2600.
I think it will be safe to say the bottom of the barrel has been well and truly scraped when ET is given a high definition remake, and with all the attention surrounding this abomination at the moment courtesy of that recent documentary I wouldn't be surprised if this ends up happening (well, maybe apart from the HD bit). If the past really has to be mined, I'd rather developers looked to fan efforts and dusted off mythical games that never saw the light of day such as Sonic Xtreme or the Resident Evil 2 prototype. Remastering titles from the last generation that only benefit from a slightly higher resolution or more stable frame rate seem like hasty cash grabs to me. The Last Of Us again already? More like the last of these I'll be fooled into buying so soon after the original. A long overdue Model 3 compilation, on the other hand... Actually, I'd best not give these kinds of companies the idea to resurrect their most deserved landfill donations from the past - I can almost imagine Nintendo putting up Virtual Boy software on their eShop! *shudder*
Nintendo actually did that as a April fools joke a few years ago. http://www.ign.com/wikis/april-fools-day-game-pranks/2012_April_Fools'_Day_Gaming_Pranks There is another remake that is unfortunately being made. I saw this awhile ago when matpatt mentioned it on Game Theory. A HD remake of *shudder* SHAQ FU!!!!!!!??????? When I just checked it out for a link I found that it has been successfully funded!!!?????? Who in their right mind would fund this piece of crap??? https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/shaq-fu-a-legend-reborn
With that logic, I guess we shouldn't listen to Nirvana or Elvis anymore. Or any old SNL episodes that had Chris Farley in it.
<snipped> http://www.neocomputer.org/projects/et/ someone already did ET. It's not HD but 2600 was never made to support true 480i or higher, only 240p. (they have made 480i test rom but it took too much CPU power to be useful)
There's a difference between playing/listening/watching something with a dead person and remaking something with said dead person and profiting off it.
*cough* http://www.elvisremixes.com/English.html https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TGbrFmPBV0Y *cough* Profiting off dead celebrities is nothing new and will never change
With that logic, I guess you feel that Chris Farley's Tommy Boy should have never been released on DVD or Blu-Ray? A game getting an HD Remake is the same as a movie (with a dead actor) being re-released on blu-ray.
The only thing Night Trap has is controversy. While at least that Shaq Fu has Shaquille O Neil on it. The Shaq Fu is also a sequel of sorts, not a remake I think.
Who cares? Let them make it, money doesn't get sucked out of your bank account as soon as the game get's released. If there's going to be idiots like the potato salad people then so be it, let them leave their thumbs in their ass and lick the screen.
Tupac Shakur would agree with you, sonicsean. People had no problem doing a hologram of him alongside Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre, even though he disliked Dr. Dre strongly. They raked in money with his image alongside someone he would never approve of. The big difference would be in what taste they do it. They could either do it in poor taste, with sly drug references or whatnot, or they could just handle it the same way as the original. We'll be able to see which if it gets funded.
The FMV genre, for what it was, began in the 80s and not the 90s with Dragon's Lair. It was an amazing game for its time. The limited movement was a drawback compared to the amazing animation and being able to control that kind of story. All game genres have drawbacks. FPS have drawbacks. I think the current generation of gamers have a low opinion on Dragons Lair and Space Ace due to the Digital Leisure ports. The company is keeping these games alive but they release them with hints turned on. So basically the game is always telling you which direction to push. Its basically like having an onscreen faq of what to do. With the onscreen hints, you can finish the games pretty quickly but thats not really how to play them. The trial and error of figuring out where to go is part of the fun of playing these games. Sure you eventually memorize the moves and finish them but whats nice is you can walk away from it for a year, go back and have a fresh experience since you've forgotten everything. Another great FMV game is Cliffhanger which never got a port of any kind and Cobra Command. With the CD craze in the 90s, alot of these 80s laserdisc games got ports and new games were made for the CD medium. There were some good games like Rebel Assault 2 and even Sewer Shark. And then there was total trash like Night Trap. But every genre has awful games. By the way, a new FMV game was released a few years ago called The Act which had amazing animation. It had an extremely limited arcade release and is now on the IOS app store and mac app store.
Some dude is trying to kickstart a zelda series for only $1,000 Just saying, anyone can do crowdfunding these days, the whole industry is a joke
How is this a new low? If anything this is ideal, FMV games in general could benefit greatly from being remastered today. Sure Night Trap might be cheesy as hell but it has a cult following who have been asking for this for years, and it is just a remaster not a remake. Just because FMV games aren't your thing doesn't mean they all suck. The low in this HD re-release trend came from games being released mere months later on next-gen consoles billing themselves as remastered or definitive.
$330k...a shade ambitious I think. Too many questions (aka too much bullshit) and not enough answers. http://kotaku.com/night-trap-creators-defend-sloppy-kickstarter-sorta-1620307753
