for that kind of service i'd feel really cheap giving them anything less than $10. that's crazy.

At most petrol stations you get at least one person who will fill your tank for you and clean your windows, if it's less busy then you'll get more people working on your car. My gf goes to a petrol station where by buying a payment card, she gets 5 yen off a litre. There are a number of self service stations although most people like the service

Tipping is not normally done, I remember leaving the change on the table once as I thought the service was good and the waitress ran after me to give me my change back...

No tip. Only the states expect tips from what I know.

Of course not all petrol stations are like that in Japan. There are two types being SELF (Self Service like most of us know however everything is touch screen that speaks to you) and manned which is what you saw on the video.

Most of the following companies have manned petrol stations but beware, they tend to have more expensive petrol as well (unless you have a members card) to pay for the staff.

ENEOS (as seen on ASSEMbler's link)
IDEMITSU (as seen on the BBC's Top Gear Special this summer)
JOMO (Aimed at the woman driver)
COMSMO SEKIYU (Give away free boxes of tissues quite often)

The next set are normally self service

ESSO (I use Esso all the time. Good quality fuel and cheaper than most)
    SHELL
    MOBEL
GENERAL (shite petrol and steep prices)
and loads of other smaller companies.

If you drive in Japan beware of the really cheap places since they tend to have piss like petrol that won't give you much power if you're driving a good car. Also Idemitsu maybe expensive but they are said to have the best quality petrol in Japan followed by Esso.

just very normal and the everydays procedure when you tank at a non self-service gas station (therefore they get approx. 2% extra than if you do it yourself).

but the guy's accent is pricless:lol:

Really, there's not a single gas station that allows you to fill your gas tank by yourself. And about the tips, they're common if you get the windows cleaned or the oil checked

In New Jersey and Oregon you can't pump your own gas by law.

As a gas station attendant, I have to say that I am happy that I don't live in Japan. Being that much of a bitch to every-day people sucks.

As an attendant at the same gas station as Drew, i have to agree, definately would take the sting out of paying 4.00 USD for a gallon of gas, however.

I can get the same service, so long as the car is waxed, and there's a semi-naked broad in the passenger seat!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    ....sadly....it happens rarely.....

AFAIK there are no self-service stations in Tokyo. They're all full service. I don't drive though, as owning a car in this city as the same as being a slave.

What I always thought was weird about the gas stands is that they are not convenience stores. At all. You'd be lucky to find a vending machine in one. It's gas, car wash, and that's it.
