Those of us who drive in Japan (be it automatic or manual) are well aware of the ridiculously low speed limits, especially us from Europe. Well get this, the Japanese police have come up with more bull shit for us people who can drive properly (ie: non Japanese). They are no longer content with stopping and fining people for driving slightly over the low speed limit instead of doing real police work. No, now the new law as of April this year states that anyone found doing 20km over the speed limit on normal roads will lose their licence! Talk about fucking stupid.

When the fuck will the dumb Japanese road police understand that it's the lack of manners and skill that causes most road accidents in this country. EVERY DAY and I mean EVERY DAY on my way to and from work I see at least 10 ass hats driving like shit and most of them aren't even speeding. These are the people the police should be penalizing if you ask me.

I tell you, this country is become more like China and North Korea every day. License for this, license for that, can't do his, can't do that.

Trust me, the only reason gaijin seem to drive better is b/c they're so few of them. Most people have their head up their asses 24/7. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

As for the cops picking on whitey, that likely has more to do w/ being out in the sticks than anything. I grew up in the suburbs, and they used to catch us TP'ing houses all the time. Moved to a city, and they're like "what the fuck ever - don't drink and drive". Cops in Tokyo have better things to do... like give directions and take 2 hours to fill out a stolen item claim!

I hate driving, btw. Lived in Hawaii. Bought a brand new ride. Left 26 months later, only had 6000 miles on it.

EDIT: It's funny how they timed this law change right w/ the massive reduction in intercity tolls. Sounds like bait, to me.

Of course it's bait. Everything here is. Do you know that in order to get permission to build our new house, every room must have an air purifier in it ! That's the most stupid fucked up law I've ever heard but it's true. Needless to say I've switched every one off. I bet that the government gets a percentage of ever unit sold plus something on the electricity they use as well.

So that'll be everyone in Japan then? Driving with my girlfriend, it seems everyone is doing 70 on a 50Kph road and on the IC roads you see people doing 100Kph regularly...

that's because the speed limits set for Japan are about 50 years out of date. 30kmph on most roads is 18mph for fucks sake! On the way to work I do 70 to 80kmph on a 50kmph road and I'm perfectly comfortable and in control. The road is a dual carriage way with two lanes each way split down the center. In the UK that would be a 50mph road which is fine but here it's more like 30mph. Even the motorway is ridiculously slow. I mean 80kmph on the one I use. Fuck that! in the UK it's 112 kph (70mph) which is fine. I my self do on average 120kmph or if I'm feeling naught then about 160kmph for a short time when the road is empty.

When will the police pull their heads out of their arse and set up road bumps in danger areas such as school roads and so on then give the rest of the roads realistic speed limits? It's no wonder pretty much most of the population drive faster than they should.

Heh, see the money point of the whole thing : it's just an excuse to get you to sell your car - or to make a new driving licence. Which means : more money from you.

Traffic accidents are still a massive problem in Japan... big enough to send people to the big house when they fuck up enough. Until those numbers go down, the laws (even the fucked up ones) look justified. W/ the congestion Japan has though, I don't see it getting any better.

lol..the japanese speed regulation is a joke par excellence. e.g. on the highway a speed limit of 60kmh is signed, but everyone is driving 100~120kmh. and it was ok so far.

f.ex. in swiss we have 30, 50, 60, 80, 100 & up to 120kmh (highway) limit regulations. so everyone is exactly aware of how fast or slow he's allowed to drive (+ tolerance of the tacho). not so over here.

but now, it seems that they will change that, but without adjusting the limits? muahahah!!! not unoften you will see a 60kmh sign on the highway. on the highway you even pay a looooot of money for being on it.

Over here in the US I do about 80-85mph on roads with a 55mph limit. Most cops don't care as long as you aren't swerving in and out of lanes.

Losing your licence for 20kph over the limit is just ridiculous. Are we talking about a temporary ban or about losing your licence for a longer period? Over here you have to harm the rules massively to lose your licence for several years (like having an accident while being heavily drunken). We got a point system, if you collect more than 8 points that means you lose your licence for 3 months (i.e. I once got 3 or 4 points for crossing a red traffic light accidentally). Something like 15 points and more means you lose your licence for a couple of years.

From what I understood it for 1 year. The real shitty thing is that they didn't even tell anyone about this new bull shit law. No TV or no radio. I found out from my wife's mother who found out from a friend who works at the city office.

In Sweden it's 30 km/h and you lose your license.

Unless you're the king of course, then you can drive how fast you want to, because you're the king, baby!

In the usa it's about 193 km/h to lose your license, you're also going to be in jail for about 30 days.

Did you double check it, just in case? It might be a case of Chinese whispers, if you excuse the figure of speech.

yes, it could be but to be honest it's just the sort of crap they'd do here. Remember the bull shit law where they said stores couldn't sell used electronics over 10 years old! That one was overruled by pure pressure from the public though. That law still exists but nobody gives a shit about it. They made an addition to it after the uproar that stated all older electronics must be fully tested first before being put on sale. The likes of Hard Off followed that rule for maybe a few months then just didn't bother after that
