I respect Dave Perry, but his last few games haven't been exactly blockbusters, have they? He should never have picked up that Matrix license.
Dude made some nice cash off the Matrix games. Don't confuse sales to the hardcore with sales to the general public. -hl718
I should perhaps rephrase that comment I made. Dave Perry has made some crap titles lately, but I respect him for his MDK & Earthworm Jim franchises ;-)
MDK and Earthworm Jim are excellent games and IPs. Too bad Jim 3d wasn't up to par with the rest of his works. What ever happenned to the planned MDK III?
I bet they are going to steal any ideas coming from that forum. Not even developers get royalties on the sales and ads, then why would joe joeman get money having not skills nor talent but just an idea that, just may be translated to a game? It would be pretty cool to get the big companies to hear our ideas (and get paid for that) but unfair to most professional developers out there...
Why wouldn't joe joeman have talent? I am sure there are plenty of potentially talented game designers out there that for whatever reason haven't had the opportunity to try their hand. If the developers are so out of ideas that they have to ask the gaming community for help, then so be it!
I meant that guy that goes to a dev forum and says "I wunna d0 a c0unter strik3 gam3 bu1 with b00bs!"... Sorry but if they wanted freelance game designers (and not dumb casuals) they would keep this in gamasutra.
Again, why are 'casual' gamers any less likely to come up with a good game than so called 'hardcore' gamers? Also, the desires and ideas of casual gamers are more likely to appeal to the gaming public at large, so publishers are probably better off asking them for the new ideas than someone who sits in front of his system 24/7. Before anyone attacks me, I'm not trying to pick on Shadowlayer here, I just wanted to make my point.
*steals barc0de wallet and buys a gun, then shoots taucias* And they say games dont make you violent, DAMN YOU BARBIE HORSIE RIDE!
Well here's the thing. Personally I don't care what applies to the general gaming public. I'm not a casual gamer and as such I have different ideas of what makes a good game. Maybe it makes sense to consult casuals inorder to make a million selling game and that's great let them sell their millions. I realize that the games industry is about cash and it's not all a charity. I just prefer what I prefer and if it's considered hardcore then I guess that's what I am. It's just a shame that there aren't to many companies left to carry the torch of the hardcore.
To be honest I got a cousin working in market research and believe me, his right when he says most people dont have a clue about what they want, let alone what other people want... Heres my moneymaker for the casual market: a GTA clone with online capabilities where you have to buy the guns using real money like in SL. You also have to pay for the cars which means double profits cuz you can also charge automakers to put their cars in the game, after all is cheap advertising. There, and I bet no casual gamer could come up with that idea...
Why not push it a bit further.. lets make all the cars drive on virtual petrol that you have to buy for real money in virtual petrol stations :110:
