Ok, just wondering, I'll post the newsgroup things I've found, they all refer to a corrupted flashrom.
The flashing procedure differs a bit in the answers, I think it's worth a try if mdmx's unit don't work better with just the Tool/WS switch set to WS.

First things first, how to see if the ps2 mainboard is dead:
Here are the messages about the test pattern, dated 28 and 29 nov. 2000:
Howto recover from a corrupted flash, dated 5 sep. 2000:
Now, another set of messages, dated 29 march 2000, with a different way of reflashing:

    unclejun, thanks for your research.

    First, the bootup sequence:

Disk light blinks //it blinks several times during the whole bootup sequence
Tool light comes on orange //yes
Blue cd light blinks //yes, three times
Monitor output blinks and then info screen is shown //MultiAVout blinks, but instead of info screen the color bars are shown
    Tool light turns green //yes

how can I check that I'm in WS mode? I switched to WS (when the system was off) but the TOOL light is still active.

Mine does that too, so I guess switching to WS mode is enough

The front led Tool is always active even if you're in WS mode.
But the 4 red leds behind the hdds will be different, OS will be active instead of TOOL.
You can see the leds on the bottom right, under the circled A:

ok, but I cannot see any difference on the screen.

dsreset works, but dsedb doesn't. The same result when dipswitch1 is up.

I'd like to try that flashupdate. Where can I get an image? Is it on one of the HDDs?

ok, I'm in WS mode. To flash the ROM I have to enter:

    dsflash -mpu4shadow t10000-rel300.bin

    Is that right?

btw, how can I transfer files to the TOOL? Tried it with Hyperterminal, but no success.

    Yes it's correct.
The easiest way would be to run a ftp server on your computer, if you don't already have one, I suggest http://en.typsoft.com/
Setup an account with reading rights in a directory where you put the files you want.
If you've already used a commandline ftp, you'll know what to do, if not:
On the Tool, use the command ftp from the home directory,
open "IP address of your computer", enter the login and password you choose, and get "name of the file you want".

    my Xbox has an FTP-Server:thumbsup:

Now, I have the files on my TOOL and entered the dsflash command. Unfortunately there is something missing:

    Code:
    [root@TOOL bin]# ./dsflash -mpu4shadow t10000-rel300.bin
    *** Updating Flash ROM ...
FlashRom updater program (/usr/local/sce/bin/romflash) not found --- abort !!!
    [root@TOOL bin]#
I tried it with the HDDs from Parris and with my newly prepared 80 GB HDDs. Both don't have that romflash :-(

switched my TV on and I can't believe it - I can see the TOOL Network Information screen!

dsedb works now, but still cannot start a game. screen just turns black.

booted back into TOOL mode, but in this mode I still have that colored bars :-(

Should I also flash in TOOL mode?

You still have to flash* it I guess, but one step is already done, it's a good sign.
    *In WS mode of course.
    PM sent.

    What game are you trying?

What I don't understand is how all these problems occured during transit? Is the problem with the TOOL just a co-incidence or could the courier company have actually caused the problem?

I'm unsure. I don't want to flash in TOOL mode until I get a 'COMPLETE' message from dsflash in WS mode.

btw, I have that romflash now and tried again in WS mode

This time I got another error:

    ./dsflash: dsreset: command not found

dsreset is in my bin folder and it works fine. But I have to enter a leading dot and a slash to start a programme, e.g. ./dsreset

When I enter only 'dsreset', I get the message 'command not found'.

What do I have to do that I can start these programmes without the ./ ?
