I bought a PSOne just recently (still need a SCPH 7501 PSX for imports), and I've been having this really bad urge to play Devil May Cry again. I need to know if there is any particular model PS2 that is the most stable? It's pretty sad when I have to make a reliability topic for every Sony console... :smt067
Mine's is a V5/V6 (only can be 100% after i open it again, to put a newer modchip). Anyway, never had one single problem with it. Plays everything fine, even the imports boot fine. I heard some bad things about the V9 as well, but it seems that the V10 is ok.
believe it or not from my time working as a ps2 technician, the most stable models are the scph 10,000 and 18,000 with fresh lasers of course.the loud noise emitting from them and the problems with attaining the external hard drive are the main drawbacks. After that v5 is the most stable.V5 was of a partyicularly good build quality. The newer models are absolute shite and die very easily.Everything here is based on models with mod chips. I know people will disagree with the 10,000 and 18,000 theory but I am saying these are the most reliable from my expeience.I have two 10,000's both modded, both bought on day one by someone and they work as they did new and both have been through the grinder.
re I plan on buying it stock, as there's a pawn shop here where you can buy (used) PS2's for $100. I'll see what type of warranty they have ("full refund within 30 days without any bitching") and if it's up to snuff, I'll see if I can find either a 10,000 or 18,000. I don't plan on modding it, by the way, as I've never soldered before in my life. Will I need to replace the laser or anything, because I'd rather not do that...
try to ge a v5, it lets use use action replay to boot imports and ....backups?... and v7+ dont, overall, the best
I have recently heard that the older models are the most reliable... which I find a bit odd, though. I have (indefinitely) borrowed a friend's V4 and it had it's lens replaced once, and now the new one makes a helluva noise when loading, but apart from that, works fine.
I've had a 10000 series Jap PS2 from day 1 and I've still not modded it at all and it still works beautifully... Absolutely no disc errors or owt plus I've had it vertically standing upwards as well. My other 30001 US PS2 also works beautifully too and this also has been vertically standing next to my Jap PS2 too. This also hasn't been modded either.
if i say you my serial number , could you know what's the version of my ps2? and if it's a reliable one?
re Do any of you know the model numbers, because I have no clue how to tell one "version" from the next :smt022 . Luckily, if I ever choose to go get one, at least I'll have a nice selection (although I'm sure the clerk will look at me funny when she sees me checking out the serial numbers ).

I agree, best ones either the JAP v0 (scph-10000/15000/18000) (10000 better ) But besides that, laser wise the newer v9's are better, with originals, for backups i still like the v7 laser!
Seriously, I've had not one problem booting any of my games on my 10000 series Jap PS2 or on my 30001 series US PS2. Mind you I only play originals as well...
I think he means using a program called "cogswaploader". I have no further clue what it does, though.
Well if you must use some crazy device, thats not exactly a stock AR disc. Also, if you're using some device, why would that device be limited to V5 only? Usually *devices* work on 2-3 versions.
