Sorry to hear your driving test didn't go well Yakumo.

Sounds like I'm not the only one having bad times. Sorry to hear that Hawanja....I'm not sure what to say to your problem other than I hope she changes her mind.

Oh, and before I go, Thanks for all the advice/comments guys I've worked out a plan for what to do next and will no doubt bore you to death keeping you updated on it. :smt043 Things look alot better for me this morning.

 

My statement is of course only valid for higher qualified jobs, why should a company want a foreigner in a lower qualified job who barely speaks the local language if a japanese guy could do the same.I didn't even know that many foreign support people are needed in japan.

 

That's the point -- a Japanese guy can't do the same. In Tokyo, there's an onslaught of foreign firms that need someone that speaks English, or preferrably both. Of course you're not doing the exact same thing that non-English speaking Japanese are doing. But since the salaries for foreigners ARE higher, why not get your money's worth? I assume that's what the big companies are thinking.

That's the majority of IT jobs, and nobody complains b/c they are generous, and give good benefits. There are others, but they're not entry-level by a stretch.

 

The majority I've seen internationally advertised were always higher qualified developer/admin jobs which didn't require any japanese but min. 2 years experience and were well paid.

Because I don't have a Japanese lincense. I don't have any driving license even though I can drive. Probably because when I lived in the UK I didn'tt really need a car then I moved to Japan when I was 23 so again I really didn't have any use for one because public transport was so good.

Ah OK. Is the driving test in Japan easier than the UKs? If ti is you could possibly try out what I suggested; maybe it would spare you some trouble (not to mention money, 60 pounds, argh).

 

Driving is easy. Get one at the USA. You should be able to then transfer it into a UK or Japanese license. THe USA license is easy. Why do you think Insurance companies make so much damn money :smt043

 

Look at the bottom A graphics designer position that requries Japanese (but probably pays shit).

I guess it's worth mentioning that just like the states, and I assume most other countries, you don't get good jobs out of the classifieds. Gotta get a head hunter.

Also note that there's really only two jobs on that page that pay more than English teaching... that's the Catch 22 of getting out of teaching. Unless you're great at what you do, you'll likely take a pay cut in terms of hours.

 

TBH I don't think any driving test is easier than an Alberta, Canada one (other provinces have very stringent requirements). I passed my test at 17 with flying colours and barely knew how to drive. If ti has been any other place I would've been sent home and told to take lessons over again, twice.

 

I don't think the drivers license thingie is screwed up more in any other place than Holland... basically you *have* to take driving lessons, which normally cost 40e an hour, do a theory test which is another 30 - and only valid for one year - and then the exams costs way more (over 100e if I'm right). And most people I know have taken around 30 lessons, a friend of mine had more than 100. Its that bad that theres special loan programs just for getting a drivers license :smt019
