In Japan, Nintendo released a gold color GameCube. It often sells without people knowing because it looks VERY similar to silver GameCubes on pictures - only a slight nuance of gold can be noticed when looking at it closely. It was released in summer 2004 for the same price as the regular GameCube (14'000yen at the time) and was exclusively sold at Toys R Us in Japan, just like the gold N64. I'm still hunting this (in box) and it's truly one of the hardest GameCubes to find in my opinion. Since I started looking around one year ago, I've seen tons of CIB Gundam/Tigers/Metal Gear and even 1 or 2 Final Fantasy GameCubes, but only a few loose Starlight Gold consoles. My question is: Why is it so rare? Was it a very limited release compared to the easy to get gold Toys R Us N64? Also: Is there a Starlight Gold GameBoy-Player by any chance? It's already been out there by the time they made the gold GC and even the Panasonic Q got one, so maybe there is?
Lovely! I definitely was unaware of this. I'm still on the hunt for an "emerald blue" controller... someday... someday.
I too only realised this existed recently I managed to get the Hanshin Tigers and Tales PAL GC far easier than even finding one of these.
I've been searching for a minty boxed Starlight Gold GC for almost 3 years now Ave and in that time I have only come across 2 on yahoo.jp and both were VERY pricey (if memory serves £340 & £395). They do pop up from time to time as a loose console only auction and are often not even labelled as Starlight Gold but I have been reluctant to import one in this condition as I'd rather save that money and use it against one in collectors condition. Your information is correct, it was a Toys R Us exclusive but I have never been able to find any solid evidence of how many were produced and how many of those were actually sold. I would hazard a guess that there is a pile of these 'new old' stock sitting somewhere! I've never seen a Starlight GB player either and I would assume that it doesn't exist; the LE consoles are generally either packed in with a GB player. It has always seemed strange to me that they are so hard to find considering that they were released very much in the middle of the GC's timeline, maybe even the height in terms of the consoles popularity?! I would still say the FF LE console would be the more limited/most expensive console but this is definitely the second (not including the prize consoles such as the MTV airbrush etc...). Good luck on your quest Ave, I will post some pictures when I finally track one down (fairly priced) myself ;-)
Nice, had no idea about this cube :O !! Looks fancy Hope you find one eventually, both of you (kiff & ave)! @alecjahn: I was very interested in getting an emerald blue controller as well, since it would kinda match an NR reader I bought about a year ago but since that NR cube got lost in the mail and never reached me, I lost most, not to say all, the interest in getting the controller
Fuck, $200 with shipping? Damn, if he offered a cheaper shipping method I'd relly consider it. I have something else I wanna buy right now... guess I have to wait even longer than I already did lol. But thanks for the link, I think the price is fair. Anyone know when exactly Nintendo decided to save on the digital out? The GC in the auction is already one that has no digital out, but I'm not sure if this applied to all gold GCs? Or if this particular unit had been exchanged with the guts of a newer GC? Seems unlikely, but you never know. Maybe it's just me who likes the thought of having a "completely" gold Gamecube...
Rare because TRUS is in a few places in Japan, the system probably sold poorly as it looked not much different. They had a TRUS only gold n64 too, but no one talks about that one either.
this guy has them all http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u3dN_kXoBHY&list=UUBsyawuEYR6sG8wx_V5jLBA&index=1
Arguably the rarest non-Development GameCube with only 150 units made. However, you see less Starlight Gold Gamecubes than FF GameCubes although certainly more gold Cubes were produced.
Should the MTV Gamecube be considered apart of a "complete gamecube collection" ? Its not official by Nintendo right?
I do not consider Airbrush prize consoles as part of any complete collection. They are sweet collectibles, but just like the Milka/RE:CV/ChuChu/JSR/MSR Dreamcasts, I don't think a collection without them would be incomplete.
I agree, if it's not an official release then I wouldn't consider a collection without incomplete. Not that I wouldn't love to own an MTV console ;-)
I have seen a few Gold Gamecubes around in game shops Nebraska / Iowa over the years. Didnt even think twice about even looking into them.
Hmm, i saw same GC in store and it was definitely PAL one. But i don't like painted plastic because it looks good only for a year or two or if you keep it in box, so i haven't bought it. Never saw anything like this again though.
