Tetris is on like Every system ever and there are countless versions and variants but...What version is the Definitive one?

    The Outlawed Tengen Cart?

    The Arcade Grandmasters?

The Gameboy Version that came packed in?

The old PC Version that ran on DOS?

A version I have yet to speak of?

    What say you?

Handheld-wise, I prefer Tetris DS to the original GB Tetris (which is still pretty damn good).

As far as console Tetris games go I really love the not-tengen-Tetris. I know Tengen's version is prefered by most players, but I just don't like it. In my opinion Nintendo's attempt has better sound and is way more fun although missing a two-player part.

If I had to determine the ultimate Tetris I'd go for Tetris The Grandmaster 3: Terror Instinct. One beast of a game: Challenging to beginners as well as to professionals, visually basic but beautiful to look at and motivating as hell.

Tetris DS really did it for me, more than the older Tetris games. I m sure some "purists" will argue against it or something but the fact remains that it's a game you get hooked AND given some control over your fate thanks to "saving" a piece for later use - makes making Tetris rows a skill, not just praying for that line to fall because you're filling up the screen with useless random pieces. It's a mathematical fact that full randomness of pieces in Tetris results in eventual and sure loss, so why not go for a more logical and controllable approach? =)

Plus, you get many other iterations of the game, even ones that you make GOOD use of the touch screen!

There's a ton of options, local multi, online multi, memorable tunes, nostalgic themes and good productions values, especially for a Tetris game!!!

I liked the GBC version. Aren't almost all Tetris games that same thing with different music and themes, though?

Also: I really loved Tetris Attack, but its not really a "True" Tetris game...or is it?

Man, some people really get pissed about being able to move your blocks when they've already dropped in Tetris games. I've never really put much thought into which of the dozens of variations of Tetris is the best, nor played any of the new arcade ones (Terror Instinct? What kinda subtitle is that for a Tetris game?). Tetris DS was really good, although the additional modes were pretty much throwaway additions, and I've got a soft spot for the original Tetris on Game Boy (never thought Tetris 2 was any good). Tetris Attack was awesome, but it's not really a Tetris game, the name was just added to boost sales outside of Japan.

Here's a documentary about the creation of Tetris, and the whole mess Tetris' creator had to go through after the game was brought to the West. The worst part is that AFAIK the creator didn't get any money from Tetris royalties, so he had to put his name on crap like Hatris and Clockwerx to maybe earn some cash.

I haven't really played tetris ds. But my favorite was tetris dx on gbc. The grapichs, music, and modes meshed perfectly.

Tetris DS didn't invent that though, there were several versions with that feature before. Something new about the DS-version is the possibility to turn the pieces infinitely so you have an endless period of time to think about your next move. That makes the make way too easy, especially in endless mode, and is probably the only reason why so many people could achieve a counterstop.
The Grand Master games feel pretty much alike the Tetris DS game (storing pieces, graphics ect.), but they're way harder and so much better to use for competition & challenge.

For me the definitive Tetris will always be the version for the original Mac. It was in black and white with beautiful drawings with a russian theme (the Kremlin or a group of cosmonauts depending on the level). Even better was the great russian music that accompanied each level. The tetris bricks in black and white looked great too with little stylings on them.

This is true, but it seems that most Tetrises don't use fully random pieces anymore:

And it's possible to play forever given enough "advanced" features:

As for me, my favorite is the original Gameboy Tetris. I've never played the arcade grandmaster ones though.

Tetris DX for Game Boy Color, nice graphics and music (may be missing the 'signature' tune since the GB Tetris Ver. 1.1) and interesting modes.

Followed be the original GB Tetris, for it's emotional and purist value.

Some other versions I play often are Tetris DS (8 Player Mayhem) and Tetris & Dr. Mario on the SNES (Mixed match anyone).

But for a real competition, the NWC 90 Cart or Replica Cart should be used ;)

Great question! Honestly, I see a difference between "definitive" and "best." Definitive "defines" or describes the whole of something. Any of the variations of Tetris, although possibly better because of more features, do not necessarily define the roots of the game.

I'd say something like original gameboy Tetris would be definitive and one of the TGM games would be best.

Why doesn't someone ask Mr. Pajitnov what he thinks is the definitive version? Surely his answer would count for something! I'd personally go with the original GameBoy edition, however, as that was how most people first discovered Tetris.

My favorite Tetris games as of now are:

    Tetris GB
    Tetris NES Nintendo version
    Tetris Plus GB
    Tetris DS
    Tetris Wii Wiiware

Its hard to choose just one since each generation of a handheld or console has seen at least one or two really good Tetris titles.

Well if you want to be anal about the definitive version, good luck finding an Electronika 60 from ex-USSR eBay sellers.

PS: on the NES I preferred the TENGEN version over the Nintendo version. I mean you had multiplayer as well, and the colours were preferable.

You can't go wrong with the GB one.

Oh and the fan-made flash version is great too, especially if the whole College class is competing with each other to get the most lines. Good times.

Just because I'm a bit of a Tetris purist...Tetris DS is fun but you can infinitely rotate a piece. There's no lockdown time which is rather annoying and stops it from being my prefered version.

I think the Tetris Party on Wii is a fantastic new version - has a lot of stuff for single and multiple players.
