I've noticed an influx of people using "Jap" to abbreviate Japan or Japanese. I'd like to just point out that many Japanese and Japan-lovers resent people from saying "Jap" as it is still considered derogatory. While you may not mean to offend, Japanese perceive it as insensitive none the less; WWII is still a touchy subject. Please show respect (especially all you so-called Japan devotees :) Abbreviate Japan with JP, JPN, or just take the time to write it out. (Its only 2 more letters.) Such a nation deserves to be written in whole.

Sorry. I'm guilty of doing it the wrong way....but I never did it with bad intentions. I shall try to do it JPN from now on :smt040

quote within context please and don't cut out the half sentence :toimonster:

  7. Ah, my apologies for the times that I have inadvertantly used that abbreviation - it wasn't meant to be derogatory at all. My current thought processes when using that abbreviation go something like this - "Well, USA is three letters, so I could capitalize it and make JAP and that's three letters too... easy!"

So again, apologies if I've offended anyone, and I'll make a conscious effort to use JP or NTSC/J from now on.

First of all I would never want to offend anyone but the term "Jap" was around for 125 years before WWII. Its o.k. to be sensitive to certain things but an actual abreviated word shouldn't stir so many feelings. :smt040

No, that's fuc king stupid. What next? No more "brits"? Should you refer to me as a 'citezen of the United Kingdom'?

I'm surprised someone really has the mentality to think this is offensive. You shouldn't speak on behalf of a nation, especially one you are not a part of. Also, need I remind you that this is a video game forum? This post has no place here.

This type of moronic nit-picking angers me. Some people just look for things to find offensive.

Hah, never thought this would happen. Before you shoot me down, just that this really HAS offended Japanese people many a time, I've seen it happen on other message boards. One of the guys offended asked for a person to use "J, JP and JPN" instead. I was trying to save you guys the embarrassment of saying potentially hurtful things out of carelessness, in case Echigoya or someone got annoyed. Also "Jap" has always been derogatory. Just because it’s an old term, that makes it acceptable? It's funny to see people offended by my very post.

Also, I'm perfectly aware of the current Japan fad, some people have been interested a lot longer than the latest generation of Cartoon Network "otaku" crowd, a group that most want to disown. This is a gaming forum I know but I've been here for somewhere between 3-4 years and have seen the majority of material jump to well, this. BTW, Funkstar, how do you know I'm not Japanese in the first place?

People that are more aware of the situation have already apologized (which is unnecessary, I'm not offended or anything) they probably already know that it can be taken the wrong way. In the U.S. "Jap" is still a used racist comment (mostly by the ignorant growing up in war times) much like "Chink", "Nigger" or the like. In Scotland one might be like "What the hell are you talking about? Get off Japan's nutts" but here in the U.S. (Where we actually have a Japanese demographic) its offensive, so stop being such an asshole. I made this post on the behalf of you guys, not because I feel Japan is the motherland or something :p

"Chink" and "Nigger" are not abreviations, they are slurs. And how the hell do I know if you are/are not Japanese? Your overly sad Japanese screen name leads me to believe you are the type of person that would kill to be Japanese. Further more, I don't really care if you are or not.

You need to ask yourself, what kind of person logs onto a board and preaches to people about what abreviations they should and should not type.

Thank you very much from trying to save us from our racist ways. You truely are a saviour. :prayer: However, you seem to have failed to convert me, so I'm off to get a Swastika tatoo and white power flag.

I think they bitch around too much if they get offended by that.

There are even lots of retards who think that lost in translation is a racist movie.

    http://www.lost-in-racism.org/

Already bitched about that in another forum ;-)

Screw this politically correct bullshit. I think the people here are intelligent enough to realize that the word jap isn't meant as a racist term here. If they're too stupid to realize this than that is their problem. Words have more than one meaning and that meaning also tends to evolve over time so I'm not going to tiptoe around words on the off chance that I might offend someone. The word gaijin wasn't meant as term of endearment by the Japanese towards foreigners. Am I offended by it. No. Would I expect GaijinPunch to change his screen name even if I was. No. This crap is a waste of time and people need to get over themselves and just deal with it.

Well first of all I never said that the slurs were abbreviations, and you're right I'm not Japanese, and don't want to be. Is Yakumo's handle crying pathetic too? I can't help but feel you have some sort of bias against me. Shouldn't YOU ask yourself these things: Why you're wasting your time responding to my "preaching." Is it your place to protect this board? Do you think you're original by bashing "fanboys", who are you impressing?

You guys are missing the point here. I know it is not used here as an insult, I don't take "Jap" seriously, perhaps no one here does but that's beside the point. My issue is that I'm tired of it being tossed around, its connotation screams disenfranchisement, which only reflects on the forum. This thread has proven to be far more interesting than I originally intended though.

If a japanese guy would really get offended I would say:

"You are the racists not me,you have racists laws and your prime minister says all foreigners are criminals, isn't that enough so stop bitching around."

    Problem solved ;-)

The word isn't racist -- it's the comment behind it that is or isn't. I generally think of white people as too stupid to realize they're saying something racist and leave it at that.

Believe me -- you're fighting a battle you'll never win. It's like the government trying to fight the war on drugs, just on a smaller scale.

    I like a challenge.

  19. Alright, sorry to feed the flames on this one, but some of you guys are really getting out of line. Kyuusaku started this post as just a heads-up sortof thing, and some of you are turning this into a bunch of "you're only doing this because you're one of those otaku that wishes they were born Japanese" bullshit. All that was being done was a friendly type warning that was saying that the use of the word "jap" can be found offensive to some, and that was it. We certainly don't toss about terms like wop, mick, limey, and worse here, so why are you guys getting in a tiff over someone warning you on the usage of "jap", which despite what you might think is and has been a rather derogatory term for a while. And I mean, honestly, the only change that you'd have to make is dropping the "a" or putting an "an" on the end of the word, is that really worth all this fuss?

And while it could be a valid point that some of you are making about people being too sensitive, I certainly did NOT appreciate Funkstar and s0urce's insinuations that the only reason this topic came up or had support was because we are all, in gentler terms, a bunch of Japanese-wannabes.
