    So was thinking...

with the wife and I planning on relocating to the southern Philippines in a few years, what would I do with a next generation console that required afar broadband connection, access to a region locked store tht neither ms or song will likely support, and other such online requirements.

somehow all I can do is think greed like this:

    1. Console manufacturers license games
    2. They bank on games to sell at a certain attach rate.
    3. This in turn creates profit.
    4. Some of said profit goes to the retail stream.

no more retail, online downloads, profit increases.

screw the developing world, regardless of westerners who may live there.

    no? Yes?

I bet it will be. It's like with the 360 updates, If you don't update you are no longer allowed to use xbox live. So now I have a 360 with shit front end (IMO) and a console that takes longer to boot than my PC!! It's a joke and I'm not looking forward to the shit they will force upon us in the next gen.

The whole forced online thing just seems so anti consumer and self serving. Offline?!? Oh well if we can't sell you anything, then theres no reason for you to have the console on anyway!

Gakai like other streaming services is just another great way to wrestle control out of the consumers hands, while masquerading as convenience. The trade off is absolutely not worth it and I encourage other consumers to not use it either.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks the 360 dashboard is crap! Too much crap in the way. I guess lucky for me, I usually just boot the console and then immediately hit X to load the disc in the tray.

Well they did mention multiple times that it was "always online" moreso than the PS3.

Although did anyone else get dropped from the stream? Because it happened to me twice.

I do that too but it still takes longer to boot the 360 and start the game loading than it does to boot my i3 desktop (8gb ram) and start watching a HD movie. That's just not right at all. PC boots to a usable state in 25 to 30 seconds. The 360 can take almost 1 minute. 1 fucking minute for a console to boot. That isn't acceptable IMO. It's all that shit media bollocks they've added to it which causes the issue.

I doubt the PS4 will require an internet connection, but yeah, we all know it's where Sony and Microsoft want to end up.

Yeah, the dashboard is absolutely terrible. Ads everywhere, what in the hell?! Most of them not even for games. I do not want to see Obama or Alvin & the Chipmunks right after turning on my console. And as I understand it, paying for a Gold subscription will remove the little tiny squares specifically labeled "advertisement", but hey ALL the squares are ads.

Totally. Sony & Microsoft are going all-online, taking away end user freedom, slamming ads in your face, and promoting crap ultraviolent games... but Nintendo I respect. They put out awesome, creative, family-friendly titles and innovative, non-creepy hardware (nothing like Kinect and PS4's new sensor camera). They always seem to have good intent. Streetpass on 3DS is a super cool feature that encourages a bit more real world interaction, for example. And the Nintendo Directs: Even if the president of the company doesn't have perfect English, he still gets up on camera to humbly tell us about all the new stuff coming.

For me, the future of gaming is Nintendo and PC. PS4 actually does have quite a few cool features, but I see myself ending up with Nintendo and computer exclusively.

I wouldn't touch a Wii U. I was burnt badly with the Wii. Way too much shit on it and the Wii U will be no different. I don't care about Mario or Zelda either. Sure, there's loads of crap on the 360 but at least there's a load of games I really enjoy and want to play unlike the Wii and I'm sure the Wii U too. I also hate any controller that isn't standard, again another reason why the Wii U is not on my list. Call me an old fart but I want to sit down, look at the TV screen with controller in my hand and play. Don't want to stand up, don't want to move, don't want to keep looking at another screen.

I also don't want to be forced to update the console, have to watch adds for shit I have no interest in, have to wait ages for my console to boot, have to play games so full of bugs it's not funny. Yeah, games these days are spread across so many systems that they are full of bugs. Sonic All Star Racing Transformed is the best kart racer EVER but it's a joke when it comes to bugs. There's loads of them plus the online ranking still doesn't work after 4 months of release!. Man, I'm in a ranting mood right now. Where is my Mega Drive? At least I know what I'm playing then.

Honestly for me a Combo of the 3DS and a WII U seems like my best option. Nintendo has been growing on me. Maybe a PS3 and Vita are in my future I need to hear more about the PS4 first. Doesn't look like the no used games thing is true thus far.

I'm hoping this always on the internet, social media connected console trend is going to go away quick. You think it would be obvious that this is not what the main gaming consumer wants. They want to be able to turn on the console and play the game, period.

Vita, 3DS, 360 and PS 3 have a nice perfect blend of internet connectivity (to get to an online store and play games or play multiplayer) where it doesn't intrude on just turning the console on and just gaming. These new systems, just like the newest smartphones, have always on connectivity to facebook etc. I just watched the HTC One launch yesterday with HTC's new interface and you turn on the phone and its all the facebook and social media tiles right in front of you. I think most smartphone users aren't that insanely connected to social media sites. They use it for surfing the internet and texting and watching Youtube in HD or something. Like what was said in this thread previously, we're going to be subjected to ads everytime we turn on the game consoles now with this always connected feature. Even worse if the console won't work without internet. Then you'll have to actually mod or hack the console to get around it.

Eventually the industry will figure out its ridiculous and hopefully drop it in the future. I really don't see the Wii U's social media connectivity (commenting on game levels so other people can see etc) as being a big selling point or even a selling point at all. As the new PS4 and microsoft consoles come out, the same thing will happen, some people may use it but most will ignore it and get past all that garbage to just play the game.

If the console supports used games and has physical retail copies available, that's all I want. I don't want to pay money for a digital (thus not technically real) belonging.

Yeah, the only online games I buy on XBLA or PSN are either Arcade titles that don't get a retail release, or free ones from Playstation Plus. Other than that I'll always buy real, and used.

I don't know what's wrong with your Xbox, I just timed mine and it was ready to go in 26 seconds, after updating it...

They mentioned a lot of cloud gaming in the 2 hours, and while you're downloading you can play the game (nothing new, WoW has been doing that for a while, along with other titles). This really stepped out in front of me, since there's all these rumours of no physical media. However later on it was confirmed a Blu-Ray drive is in the system.

What type of 360 is yours? Mine is the last elite model with 120gb HD. I just timed it from power on to actually being able to boot a game. It took 1minute 5 seconds. Actually I'll make a video to show how bloody slow it is :(

Do you have a link or a source to confirm this?

I just want to get my facts straight before making a video :p

Either IGN, Kotaku or GT said so. One of the media.
