I wouldn't say its more powerful than the XBOX - in certain ways it is faster, but that doesnt make its overal system balance and properties any better in bredth. E.g lacking the programmable T & L

Ahh, yeah. I just remember seeing something about it being a little more powerful then Xbox 1 or equal. Still though.

Back at GC launch motion sensing was too expensive to be included in the GC controller. Sony have pretty much said the same thing in interviews. Whether you believe Sony was also experimenting with such technology is one thing, but it is true that the components for motion sensing were prohibitive in their modern form back then.

Nope, the CPU is just overclocked which gives is a small edge over the Xbox's celeron, but the GPU/graphics are still inferior.

And yeah I forgot it was WiFi only, my bad...

It must have been CPU wise where I read it was more powerful.

By the way, for the ones that say "is just a couple renders, wheres the rest?" choke on this: the official designer's sketchbook and an interview with one of the creators

    And the interview:

We were brought in to help [Gyration] pitch their gyro technology (which had previous only been used in pointing/mouse devices) to Nintendo for more complex use in gaming—an idea way ahead of its time back in '01.

Based on a requirement to roughly preserve the existing Game Cube button layout we created usability concepts that would work for one- or two-handed gaming. We experimented with different configurations through sketches, models and interviewing various hardcore gamers.

Gyration decided to hedge their bets choosing the quick-release idea as it could work for split-handed gaming without shaking up the already old-fashioned two-handed controller paradigm. We weren't party to discussions between Gyration and Nintendo so we don't know exactly how Nintendo arrived at their solution.*

It would have been fun to take the project further than just a rough usability prototype though. It is cool to see that at least Nintendo finally decided to take the huge risk in developing the current (ambidextrous) Wii controller.

BTW, for the record most of us designers support you lefties out there. Unfortunately the business world often decides that ambidextrous attributes aren't worth the effort.

*: I bet nintendo saw the money in selling the remote and the normal controller separately...

i love the designs, i saved them to my PC.

That said, the wiimote was to be released as an accessory for the GC as our friend Julian says at Factor 5 in an interview of Lair, but it was deemed to be too expensive.

The Wii isnt just another gamecube. IT's a new marketing idea, a different strategy and a totally new concept for the purchasers. So what if at heart it's a GC?

The XBOX was a PC at heart but it was established as a well known console.

Yeah, Xbox was a PC. It didn't make it crap or anything.

Whoa colombus! wheres the new marketing idea? and the new concept?

You could say the PSX was a new thing becos sony sold it to guys in their 20s and as a lifestyle device and not a console (note that I'm pretty far from being a sony fanboy) but the Wii is nothing but plain old recycling: just like Atari in the 80s, nintendo took old tech and sold it again, and now they're picking up the games and doing the same with VC.

My problem is not that however, but that they sell it at 25% more than the GC 6 years ago!

I'm not saying they should give it away for free, but jezz, 25% more? they should at least sell it for 25% less!

I tought you said before that the Xbox was NOT a PC...

I don't think you can argue that the Wii doesn't rely on a new marketing idea and concept. Come now! That is all it has.

Business is business, man. Get over it and move on. Just don't buy the Wii and you'll be fine.

The GC didn't use motion sensing due to cost. It was prohibitive at that time. Nintendo could have released the Wii controller for the GC a year or two ago, but it needed a new platform to generate interest. If they'd released it for the GC it would have been a mere blip on the radar and then gone.

I agree the Wii is too expensive though.

The Wii is making hot cash at the moment. AS soon as the competition, namely the 360, drops its price, then Wii can easily slide its price down too. Why bother reducing the price however when it's selling so well? They re enjoying every single penny they re making off the Wii, and I say "Bravo!", because whoever orchestrated this scheme got himself a winning horse in this generation's race so far.

I just wish we'd see more games.

    N64

    Gamecube

    Wii

Nothing has changed unfortunately, other than Nintendo are successful again.

ShadowLayer, do you like....actually play games? Or just talk about how all the game companies are stupid? Seriously.

Gamecube + mem card + game = more then a Wii at launch.

More like an old strategy thats new for nintendo!

I disagree, the SEGA fishing controller had pretty much the same motion sensing capabilities that the Wiimote has today (check the Virtua Tenis video) so unless Ir leds and sensors are the expensive parts (and I doubt that) then I see no reason why it would've been prohibitively expensive at the time.

But I do see some logic in delaying that decision since at the time there was a "specs race" between the Dreamcast and PS2 to see which console had the best graphics and technical capabilities, and when even some people today call the Wiimote a gimmick, then in 2001 everybody would've mocked the concept.

Dunno, moral integrity? ah shit I forgot we were talking about corporations, and nintendo none the less...

Not all gyroscopes are the same.

Actually, the ones used in the Wii remote aren't even built by Gyration - but from some other company ( i had made a topic on this when the subject was first announced, with appropriate links).

Thus, the gyroscopic technology found in the massively big fishing controller is years behind the tiny and more responsive one found in today's Wii controller.

It's like saying that cars were always cars. That's true, to an extent, but results get better with time and research. Someone could argue that the Sidewinder by Microsoft that housed gyroscopes was another example - we all saw how well that played in games (it didnt actually).

The Wii is a console designed from the ground-up around the motion control scheme. Unlike the PS3 with SIXAXIS, the Wii remote is the main dish.

Also, back in the days of the GC it was promoted as a Game machine - the company still being run actively by Hiroshi Yamauchi at the time.

The Wii aims at a totally different identity, showing itself as a center-piece of the new-age gaming in your living room. This new direction being held by a fresher mind, Satoru Iwata.

So, you see, it's not just the console - it's the whole company's philosophy that has changed.

Like it or not, the wii is what it is, and its very succesful.

Man, saying Wii is Gamecube or wtf ever is like saying Xbox Live on the first Xbox is the same thing as Xbox Live on 360.

    I never said they were...

Indeed, but the thing is a motion-based controller was indeed viable at the time, not like say 11 years ago when the N64 was released.

How can it be designed around the motion-based controller if its a modified gamecube? is like saying a minivan with new bumpers and a spoiler is built around racing:lol:

Some cheap PR and things are completely different?

Dont fool yourself dude, is the same old corporation that used illegal monopolic deals to assure its dominance of the VG market.

PR can archieve anything, just look at "Beyond Petroleum"

    Marketing is everything.

The GC was a very good console in my view, yet it failed because of a bad image. In contrast the Wii is benefiting from marketing, perhaps more than it should deserve - but games will come since nintendo's new console is installed in so many households. Thus, there's a good chance that the Wii will become one of the better nintendo consoles thanks to all the support it will definetely get from developers - where the GC failed before it.
