You're wrong. First it was WMDs, then it was al-Qaeda ties, now it's to "promote democracy". And all those attacks did was worsen world relations. Thank god Bush passed the Patriot Act. After all the shit he pulled we sure have a lot of enemies.

I don't know if he had them when the US invaded Iraq but Iraq did have them at some point. The US sold Iraq chemical weapons. Now what happened to them ( used up or destroyed) that I dunno but the US did sell Iraq chemical weapons.

Does that matter? No it doesn't matter. As you said if it wasn't weapons of mass destruction it would be ties to al-Qaeda or unpaid parking tickets.

    Please Read!!!

I know this is a gaming forum, but this, in my opinion is more important than gaming. Mine, and some of my closest friend's educations are at stake, and the cool thing is, some of you may be able to help!

If anyone here has read these books for college, please PM me. "Beloved, The Bluest Eye, The Catcher in the Rye, …Huckleberry Finn, The Things They Carried, Going After Cacciato, or Ethan Frome" I know, it's an odd request but I have my reasons.

The reason I ask is because of this: http://www2.morganton.com/content/20...cal-education/

The school board in my county is trying to ban the aforementioned books from being taught in my classes, the "Humanities" level. The books are said to be too violent, offensive, etc by some douche-bucket's parents. If you have read them, and/or used them in college, please PM me, we need all the help we can get on this.

And, here's a letter about the topic from my current teacher to some postgraduates who have already completed the course: http://www.facebook.com/topic.php?ui...850&topic=5433 (Yeah, it's on facebook, deal with it. If you don't listen to me, listen to him, he has 2 English degrees for Christ's sake.)

    Thanks,

    Chris.

Sorry, but things like this really get on my nerves, people making decisions for us, which can impact our lives dramatically. If you can help, then please do, if anyone that sees this, and lives close enough (doubtful), there is a Board meeting on the 17th to discuss the "restricting" (banning) of the books.

This is also posted on Xbox-Underground.

Edit: Also, what do you guys think about the banning of books in general?

I don't understand what you mean by, "It doesn't matter." The fact that he lied to us to allow him to create a vassal state and in turn make a giant bloody mess of the whole situation is inexcusable. In fact if you Google "bush war crimes," you'll see that many people are preparing to sue Bush and his associates. So, yes, it does matter. If he was being honest with the American people then there would be no need for all the backlash.

And the idea that all that matters is that we win is a VERY dangerous idea. First off, what is winning? Is winning suppressing popular thought in Iraq and establishing a vassal state? Is winning establishing a US-freindly Middle East? Or is winning just establishing democracy in another country? And whatever happened to Afghanistan? The lack of a pre-defined goal makes it easy to shift our goals and ideas so continue a fight into places that we never originally intended to go.

Secondly, at what cost must we endue to "win"? How long must we stay in Iraq (If it were up to those in power, we'd be in there forever)? How much money are we going to spend to keep "winning"? Do we HAVE the money to win? How many people are going to die so we can "win"? The cost is greater than what it's worth to stay in Iraq.

It's frightening just how many resources those in favor of the war are willing to spend. Why stick with a plan that has shifted its ideals several times, to the point where we would have to admit to being the aggressor rather than the defender? Maybe if we look at the private lives of those involved we can find more information.

And it's curious that the only people profiting from all of this are those close to the big-wigs in the Bush administration. The Carlyle Group, for example, has made over a billion dollars after 9/11. When so many of the same people "coincidentally" make so much money, things start to look askew.

It just isn't in the American people's best intrest to continue the war.

I think the US goverment would describe "winning" as removing Saddam and his goverment in favor a self placed puppet goverment, securing the boarders and then removing all pockets of resistance. After this, I would guess the US goverment would like to build up the Iraq military to surpass that of all in the region. Which all might lead to an attack on Iran while the US tries to make it seem like Iraq invaded Iran without US involvement.

Afghanistan is a tough place to fight. No doubt about it. The USSR tried and failed and I've heard it refered to as their Vietnam. The US has been making gains in Iraq and they have been diverting more troops to Afghanistan. I expect this will continue.

As for "it doesn't matter" that is just from a popular opinion point of view. When you lose everyone points fingers but when you win no one wants to hear any different. The victor writes the history books. Yes in this day and age there will always be web sites dedicated to the reverse. I don't think these websites will ever produce any results meaning they will have little real impact but they will be there. The way this whole war will be seen has more to do with end results more so than how it started. That isn't just this war that is every war.

If you think this is bad just imagine what would have happened if Russia and not the US won the cold war.

THat blows. I'm sure they have also abolished teaching evolution and to have text books that piont out negroes and freeing slaves are signs of 'trouble ahead'.

They tried banning a minor book last semester, but that fell through, I'm hoping that this will fall through too. Whoever was fighting for it to be banned almost won, until the NCAC stepped in.

I'm not sure why the decision makers of the community and the school system think that if we read something, we'll do it, it's a retarded concept really. The whole reason our teacher lets us read these books are because of the amount they're being taught in colleges and universities today, and because the offer valuable life lessons.

One book on the list, Beloved, written by Toni Morrison, tells the horrors of what an African-American had to face during the times of slavery. Yeah, sure there are graphic scenes in the novel, but they're there because they actually happened to the slave whom the book is based on. Without these scenes, I don't think the book would have as big of an impact that it has had on people who have read it.

I studied Beloved for A-level, and it was a pretty tough book, but that's all the more reason to include it in the syllabus. The idea that it should be removed because of its content is incredibly patronising - but I notice the article indicates that the school is intending to warn parents of content rather than remove books outright. Personally I think that's still the reverse of what should happen (parents should take an active interest in their child's reading and monitor content themselves), but if it's between that and removing the books altogether, then I think its preferable.
