What I don't understand is, if she was supposedly so mentally disturbed why was she allowed to have custody of her children?
That doesn't make any sense, GoH. Are you trying to start a stupid shitstorm with a remark like that? Anyways, this is a really fucked up story. This may sound mean, but I think people that plea insanity for doing horrible things like this might as well get executed within a week after trial. If you're that fucked up mentally and you're incurable to boot, theres really no reason to lock you up for 50 years to think on it, is there? This is all opinion and all, and there might be a case where someone gets mentally scarred and it messed them up somehow, but endangering everyone around you and society in general?
A single bullet, costs a lot less than a human life that this woman took away. Death sentence awaits her in my eyes.
I hate it when the Internet goes all lynch mob after stories like this. Does it really make anything better if you kill another person? The death penalty is fucking barbaric, and it's inexcusable that some developed countries still have it as a means of punishment.
actually, death penalty is rather human compared to some torture methods. /sarcastic but enough of that, you are right! the death penalty is something that should not exist in the world we live in today, it is so medieval!
Totally! We should waste money by locking them up in prison, and maybe even let her go for "Good behavior!"
FFS, get a grip people. The woman is mentally ill. This is a disgusting and terrible event, but if she is mentally ill then she is not thinking rationally, logically, or to anything we might consider normal or acceptable. What should be questioned is why she was allowed to be alone with the child.
My opinion: If JUST ONE innocent life can be spared, it is totally worth it to get rid of the death penalty. And there are plenty innocent people jailed up. There are people jailed and on death row since the 80's and just now their cases can be rolled up again, and through some DNA tests they are found innocent.
Yes, that happens sometimes. But if theres a person in there who is proved beyond a shadow of a doubt to be eating baby brains and crap like that, they deserve the death penalty. Mentally ill or not, it just sounds like a bad excuse to me. Perhaps there really is something wrong with her, but it would be more trouble than its worth to "Fix" her, and besides, even if they did, she'd probably kill herself anyway...living with the fact that you know you ate your kid's own brain? If she goes and does that, she's a menace to society. If she got out of prison or whatever she's being kept in, she very well may kill someone and then eat them like she did her baby all over again.
By the ass-backwards, hillbilly logic of the death penalty, when my 2 year old son throws a tantrum, screams, and pounds the floor with his fists, I should do the following to punish him, show him he's wrong, and how adults behave: 1: Throw a tantrum 2: Scream 3: Pound the floor with my fists Despite the fact that it's not, the state should do what it can to at least attempt to be above it's lowest members. This doesn't even touch on the issue of mis-convicted, innocent people of which there are many, by way of corruption as well as slipping through the cracks of an unsound judicial system.
Personally I don't have a problem with the death penalty, becasue I believe "Revenge" is a justifiable motive. That's really what it boils down to, they say it provides "justice" and "closure" for a victim's family, but those are just code words for Revenge. If I had it my way, it would be up to the victim's family whether or not the death penalty is used, so those who object to it can stop it if it conflicts with their beliefs. However, putting a mentally ill person to death is not right, and special cases should be made for that. Somehow it doesn't seem right to wreak revenge on someone who does not know the consequences of their own actions. Then again, there are many different types of mental illnesses. Schizo and insane, talking to demons? Yeah maybe that person should go into a mental hospital, which is worse than prision imo.
This is about the only way I see it as "right" even though I believe that while the immediate gratification would be nice, the emptiness would eventually set in. Have any of you fucking seen Oz? Prison is not fun. Justice can indeed be served w/o killing someone.
I believe that the death penalty is an absolute necessity as both a punishment and as a deterrent. That said, I think the standards for both when it is applied and burden of proof need to be much stricter than they are now.
