http://www.xbitlabs.com/news/multimedia/display/20061229091844.html Sony Computer Entertainment Inc.’s PlayStation 3 is already a multimedia powerhouse with advanced processing capabilities as well as support of one of the next-generation digital video disc format. However, Sony is mulling to create a version of the console that would appeal more to those wishing to use the PlayStation 3 not as a gaming machine on the first place, but as a primary video player. The “media-centric” PlayStation 3 will feature capabilities of consumer electronics devices and will be more focused on digital media content playback, rather than on gaming. Based on claims reportedly made by executives of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc., PC Watch web-site reports that the PlayStation 3 “media-centric”-edition will feature anti-vibration mechanism on the Blu-ray disc drive, 512MB XDR memory, more advanced power supply unit and two HDMI connectors to divide audio and video data. The third version of the PlayStation 3 will also have a new design that matches other consumer electronics products and is unlikely to be totally similar to the currently sold PlayStation 3 gaming machines. Still, all the games for the PlayStation 3 should play absolutely well on the device. According to comments reported to had been made by executives of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc., the PlayStation 3 game machine is unlikely to be sold by SCEI, but more probably to be supplied by Sony itself under Sony brand. Given that in the consumer electronics industry manufacturers do not subsidize hardware in hope to compensate their losses by selling many games, it is highly likely that the console, which currently costs $840 to manufacture, will be sold at a premium price. The Japanese web-site noted an executive at SCEI as saying that the price range could be from Â¥200 to Â¥300 thousand ($1680 to $2520). Sony PlayStation 3 console is based on the Cell processor developed by IBM, Sony and Toshiba, the RSX graphics chip by Nvidia Corp. and will be equipped with Blu-ray optical disk drive. There are two versions of the PlayStation console available today: one is equipped with 20GB hard disk drive and priced at $499, another features 60GB hard drive, card reader and some other improvements and is offered for $599.
Do sony even know what their customers want anymore. LOL bravo sony, yeah make the ps3 even more expensive by tacking on a few extras & see how well it sells. It will bomb as bad as the last time they tried this ploy when they released the failed PSX.
Sounds like the PS3 from E3 2005 sans the router capabilities... it is highly likely that the console, which currently costs $840 to manufacture, will be sold at a premium price. The Japanese web-site noted an executive at SCEI as saying that the price range could be from ¥200 to ¥300 thousand ($1680 to $2520).[/quote] Three words: no fucking way:110: Seriously, who the fuck is going to pay 2500 bucks when you can get a PS3, a highend DVR and Bluray player and still have some money left, maybe enough for a media-center PC? I cant believe after the abysmal failure of the PSX in japan they still believe they can sell this kind of shit... You know what would be a great idea? bring the HDD-capable PS2 back, redesign the external case, slam a 120GB in there and some internet capabilities (like those in PS3) and sell it as a console-slash-DVR. If they give it away with a service (like comcast's DVR) everyone would get one.
If this actually goes through, I'll have to quote the flash 'toon "Phoenix Wrong": "It's official. You suck!"
That's the point, it's so small why bother making a PS3 version? People who buy the real high end AV hardware probably wouldn't care less about gaming. Yakumo
I'm calling BS on this one for the following reasons.. 1) It makes absolutly no sense.. Nobody is in the video game hardware business to sell videogame hardware.. This sounds like a hardware focused endevor. In order to accomplish this you gotta sell the hardware for AT LEAST cost, and ideally more than cost. If they did that it would be a $1000+ piece of hardware. Now realisticly, is there a market for that? Sure you got the niche market who would buy it, but would it be enough to justify the whole point? 2) Why would sony all of the sudden get a wild hair up their ass to devise a new PS3 model when they can barely move the existing ones.. I dont know about you guys, but I got ps3's sitting on shelves at my best buy, and according to nexgenwars it's yet to sell a million units WORLDWIDE. 3) It's Sony.... did everyone forget? Why would they stretch the "playstation" brand that far from it's whole point of existance when Sony could simply just create a completly different blue ray setup under the standard sony brand? Sorry but this just sounds like something that originated from the depths of some fanboy's brain on a message board somewhere and for some reason this site decided to run with it..
If the article is legit... "executive at SCEI as saying that the price range could be from ¥200 to ¥300 thousand ($1680 to $2520)" There you have it, over $1000 per unit. That, I'm still trying to figure out  Though, I'm pretty sure once the good games come out, PS3s will start selling at a better pace. From what I understand it was a real lackluster launch, as far as games are concerned. Remember the PSX? Seriously though, I'm with you on this. This article just doesn't seem... right for me. I'm pretty sure Sony knows what they are doing, and I doubt they would shoot themselves in the foot YET AGAIN with another PSX type machine, seeing how "well received" the original PSX was. I guess we will just have to wait and see!
Over at the "semi-official" Three Speech website, there was a write-up about the origins of the PS3 design, during which they said something about one of the final designs being PS3 hardware in a regular component Hi-Fi-style casing. They said this design didn't get up though, so not so sure where this rumour originates.....
Maybe they used that design for the devkit? Sure as hell looks a lot better than the retail one to me. The butt-ugly case would almost be a reason not to get the damn thing. (if i didnt have other reasons not to get it )
