The one that can cause DRE's and brick systems. Does anyone know exactly which update it is? http://www.gamespot.com/news/6314530.html?part=rss&tag=gs_news&subj=6314530
I think they are referring to the Spring 2011 update too. Supposedly, they've contacted *all* affected gamers and started sending out brand new consoles as replacements. The only major issue is disc read errors and doesn't specifically brick consoles. Rumour has it that the firmware was incompatible with some early models of disc drive which prevents it reading - does anyone have any info as to which drives are affected?
Id like to know that facts my self, I dont want to hose a older modded/jtaged system.. I dont want those replaced
That article and the ones many other gaming websites ran was inaccurate, it was a firmware released to beta testers that caused the problem, the update released to the public has no problems. Source: http://majornelson.com/2011/05/18/clearing-up-some-confusion/ The update in question was the 13146 dash, which is currently be rolled out over Xbox Live or can be downloaded from here: http://digiex.net/downloads/downloa...0-13146-0-download-final-version-avatars.html Hope that helps, you have nothing to worry about unless you have a Flashed Xbox 360!
I've heard the systems that have to be replaced all have older DVD-ROM drives that don't support the newer AntiPiracy measures and thus MS is using this "incompatibility" problem as cover to get rid of them. It seems likely.
Not sure if it is this latest update but my xbox is having random issues with disc's whether they are new, old, not scratched, lightly scratched....etc I can play a game for a few hours just fine without any problems but then the next time i can be like 5 minutes in and i'll get a disc read error. Other times i can put a disc in my console and it won't recognise it correctly showing me the Play DVD instead of Play Game. Sure i would love a newer xbox if my problems were with the update but if not then i don't care as long my games still play.
Well, I have a 2006 model (I bought it in June of 07) that had a tremendous amount of red rings before it finally kicked the bucket. I sent it back to Microsoft in early 08 and it was only "repaired", then sent back, and hasn't given much trouble since (it did overheat like ten times in a week, but I placed it further away from the TV and solved the problem). If any 360 is likely to be fucked by the update, it's probably going to be mine. I'll tell you when it rolls out.
Actually, the article you just referenced says the opposite: It *was* a previous update, as stated in the article. The clarification was that it was *not* related to the new disc format beta, as some news sites falsely reported.
My 360 is fine with every update so far. I guess if you buy a later system you shouldn't have any problems.
All of the "legacy" 360 DVD-ROMs support AP25 except for the Samsung MS25/28 drives. I wouldn't put it past Microsoft to generate a false incompatibility but if they did and someone figured it out they'd be screwed. On the other hand if they came out and said "any 360 with a Samsung drive will need to be replaced, free of charge for a brand new slim" you'd probably not have too much in the way of complaints. Except from the pirates of course. Anyone using their 360 for backups is probably using a JTAG system.
My understanding was that this was an upcoming update (to be released between May 18th-May 31st), and that MS was replacing any consoles that it made incapable of reading discs with slim models. I only recall this because my 360 is a launch Japanese unit, and I'm debating whether or not to get the update since: 1. I'd get a slim out of it. But maybe not a Japanese slim, thus rendering half of my 360 collection usless. 2. I have a launch Japanese system, so it's gonna RROD on me eventually anyways. Would be nice if MS gave me a Japanese slim... but I doubt that would be happening... if they give me anything at all.
I wouldn't want a slim. they look ugly IMO. Plus that nasty shinny plastic just begs for dust and marks. Yakumo
I'm sure some people still use non-jtag or they wouldn't still be working on the stealth FW and what nots
4gb Slims aren't shiny, they have a matte finish. Thats the one I would choose, even if I would need to buy a harddrive after.
Not so. Lots of people want to play online and use pirated games. People still do it. This is all part of trying to stop these people.
It was just news sources jumping to conclusions, according to Larry Hyrb (aka Major Nelson). I think we can safely assume that if anybody knows anything about this, it should be one of the public faces of Xbox Live.
