10 minutes after start up this is what my resources look like

Normal? Or did the people I have working on my laptop screw something up? THE ONLY thing I have running on Start up is windows security essentials.

    This is driving me insane.

I also have this thing where the right audio channel shits out and only comes back on if I turn the volume up.

I just got my laptop back from some new Technicians and these things popped up after getting it back.

Obviously not considering you're got obvious stuff like armsvc which is related to adobe programs and richvideo.exe which is related to the bloatware that is cyberlink products.

List them by using most memory to least, and post a screenshot of that, also make the window bigger so we can see EVERYTHING.

Ok that narrows it down a bit. Right now I have about 1.1 gigs running so it balloons like that then gradually goes down which I've seen windows do but alot slower.

I suppose I can start by uninstalling the cyberlink stuff?

Next time I start up I'll take another shot of the running processes.

win key + R, type in msconfig, navigate to the startup tab and have a look in there, untick what you dont need on boot up (Java, iPod related crap etc are repeat offenders I find). Anything your uncertain of, google before you untick, also create a restore point first please.

and yes, remove the cyberlink crap, it's overly bloated as far as burning/playing cd's goes, VLC is far more lightweight and can play DVD's just fine.

I turned it off then on again And it seems to have stopped. I left my resource monitor running and here's a rougly 5 min interval.

    http://oi60.tinypic.com/wvr39s.jpg

    a few minutes later

    http://oi58.tinypic.com/jf887t.jpg

    and right now

    http://oi57.tinypic.com/mc9oqp.jpg

Which is normal from how I remember it.

So I have no idea maybe it didn't bloat up because I had the resource monitor running. But it's normal at least this time. But cyberlink is gone the techs that did the clean install/hard drive replacement installed it.

I'm baffled. Maybe my laptop is on the way out? The right speaker is having problems, other techs knocked out my indecator lights and I think my screen has a few dead pixels.

    Time for a new lappy?

and if I do get a new laptop can I use the windows 7 disc I used for this computer? I AM NOT using windows 8. Can't stand it.

If you just use your laptop at home you can get a great deal on a laptop with a dead screen:) that's what I use for my emulation system. An Acer with a dead screen connected to my TV via HDMI in 1080p. The laptop was peanuts because the seller thought it was useless without a working screen. More fool him (^v^)

This Laptop's final fate is to be used for MAME. Once I'm done with it I'm doing a clean install of windows and just installing MAME and a joystick driver. as for a new laptop as long as it has HDMI and dedicated graphics it's golden

It's not "on the way out" you can't blame faulty hardware for poor resource management as the result of god knows how much 3rd party software clogging your machine, although you can get faulty ram sticks, they tend to either work or not work. The CPU and Hard Drive are highly unlikely to affect RAM usage, it is known to happen but very very very rarely. The speaker, lights and screen are fair enough though worthwhile issues to resolve.

If I were you I'd do a fresh windows install with no bloatware whatsoever, no virus scanner, nothing. Update windows as far as it'll allow you to and then migrate your personal items in slowly, assessing what programs you actually need as you go.

As for your question about the Win7 disc. Yup you can use it in anything you like license permitting, Win8 isn't hard locked to new machines or anything.

In the event that something you do use regularly is responsible for eating ram then I'd consider grabbing a machine with at least 8GB of Ram or the option to upgrade to that, you will require a 64-bit OS but seeing as you have 4GB installed already and it's present in Sys Monitor I'm guessing you already have.

If your not happy with the performance/footprint of Windows, use Linux instead. It makes for a rock solid MAME/HTPC/Desktop system.

Oh I AM SO TEMPTED man SO SO tempted. I've just about had it with Microsoft's bullshit and Window's (and there for microsoft's) bullshit. Only thing is for linux I'll need something for Video editing so I can do my shows.

This is a 4 year old laptop. in the last 6 months, I've had a hinge replaced, Had something I still hav eno idea what done to make it turn on (after I got it back for the hinge it powered off for no reason and wouldn't come back) the Hard drive failed now the speakers and this. I'm more than a little disgruntled. (then again you guys know how quick tempered I am at this point) I've moved some emulation over to my Dreamcast and in time will move Mega Drive/Genesis emulation over to the PS2 or start building emu consoles out of Raspberry pi.

but I still need something to edit video. If I do go with a more powerful machine I may even go with a capture device.

Both my laptop and my desktop use about 3GB with no programs loaded. I'm not that worried though, since OS X Mavericks can compress the memory (most of the time it doesn't need to), and because I have plenty of it (8GB in my laptop and 16GB in my desktop).

EDIT: Apparently Windows uses a lot less - closer to a bit more than 1GB. Not sure why that is.

If the PS3 had a Daily Motion app. I wouldn't even need my laptop for anything other E-mail, Writing and Video editing.

First of all, the techs most likely did a system restore, so your laptop is full of bloated vendor-installed crapware. Second of all, you need to keep in mind that Windows 7 will reserve as much available memory as possible rather than leaving it free, so it's not necessarily a case of that memory being eaten up by applications.

This svchost (netsvcs) seems to be the offender.

Is superfetch running? I found that to be a memory hog with my Vista and Win7 laptops - I don't need the files pre-fetched so I usually disable it along with the Aero/glass theme and the bloody searchindexer as I've noticed that it also starts to eat memory as well so every now and then I usually have to kill the svchost, desktop window manager, explorer a couple of times until whatever is causing the issue between them all has been stopped finally (though for me - it's usually when superfetch, searchindexer or windows update restart and continue on is when a single svchost process gets extremely bloated).

I mean, if you aren't going to really be using the laptop for anything other than emulation I don't really see why you would need all of the other crap running... I've just been too lazy to go into regedit and disable stuff properly for the most part as killing the processes a couple of times or just outright disabling particular services usually does the trick for me.

I just said fuck it and I'm installing windows myself. But I can't seem to do a 100% clean install there will be a windows.old folder. I have no idea how to do a 100% clean install.

Make a linux USB live thumbdrive (I suggest mint) using unetbootin. Then boot onthe USB stick, backup your important files, erase all partitions on disc. Reboot into Win7 installation DVD/USB. Install WinCrap.

Quite frankly, nowadays, Ubuntu/Mint are really user friendly, you should give it a try if you're fed up with Windows. Even my mom is on mint now, though I don't know if she simply think it's a skinned XP or not...

I might do that next time. I looked it up and found out what I needed to do.

Anymore windows problems and I am just going to throw linux on the thing.

2 gigs, yeah sounds about right. My employer recently forced me to move my Linux kernel development tasks from a proper Linux workstation (slightly less than 100 megs used when idle) to a VM inside of Win7 (a bit more than 2 gigs used right after login (I'm hesitant to call it 'idle' since Windows seems to constantly play around with itself for some reason)). "Excellent" OS, that.

For a clean install, when setting up the HD, remove (and recreate) all partitions (you might have to go into some "advanced" mode at some point to be allowed to to this) - or at least the system partition. That'll get rid of any leftovers.
