Yes, but even though it should be Kansai-style here in Hiroshima more people stand on the left than on the right. I guess the Japanese themselves are confused.

GaijinPunch, that video is nasty ! And why in hell do those guys volunteer for such punishment? Their bits must be ruined after that !

    I have one for you.

Why on earth do Japanese insist on crowding around the entrance of the train until being packed like sardines when the aisle is complete empty plus seats are vacant?

Depending on which way the train is going, I normally go to the back or front of the train (the opposite of where the smokers are) and normally there are seats. Although I did get up to let some old person take my seat but he refused (not the first time either....) and literally pushed me back into my seat... I got out my PDA and played mahjong for the rest of my journey....

A likely answer: because standing up lets you look out the windows (or up at the ceiling, at advertisements) a lot easier. Sitting down, there's little you can do to avoid eye contact with the person opposite you. For Japanese people, eye contact is more uncomfortable than the aforementioned "Japanese massage".

You've not been on Japanese trains much have you? A Japanese person sitting down one of the following will happen.

Will get out mobile phone and start doing things
    Fall asleep
    Read newspaper / magazine
Get out Nintendo DS or PSP
    Listen to MP3 player

 How true. I was on the train the other day (well everyday now since the pigs stopped me from driving) and everyone in the row was sitting there with their mobile phone out  I wanted to take a photo but with the deadly silence everyone would have heard the shutter noise :-( Bloody funny sight mind you.

Myself? Find a nice corner seat then drift of in to the land of nod whilst listening to some tunes.

As this isn't worth a topic of it's own, in many anime and manga featuring girls who go to school, there is normally a girl who oversleeps and runs to school eating a piece of toast whilst leaving the house, has anyone ever seen a schoolgirl

    1) Running down the road
    2) Eating a piece of toast outside of a cafe
    3) Putting on jacket in the road

There is a logical reason for that though. Toyko being of Samurai heritage and Osaka being Merchant based, Samurai traditionally went by in a way that they could draw their sword. Merchants prtoect their wallets.

It makes sense until you start to think about the lack of escaltors back then

I had simlar experiences, at least 5 times I offered my seat to older people and got a polite refusal. A number of time I gave my seat to a young mother with pram and kids, they were 50/50 in accepting.

I was hoping your reason for going to the front would be to watch the guard/driver..... maybe I am too keen on Densha De Go?
