Anyone living on the east cost of Japan should take precautions. Around 4:30pm today (28th Feb) a tidal wave is expected to hit. Largest height is 3 meters which while not massive it can still cause some serious damage. Here's a link to Yahoo Japan's area info - http://disaster.yimg.jp/1267321867/meteo.yahoo.co.jp/weather/jp/tsunami/index.html

    Worst hit areas will be:

    Aomori-ken Pacific Ocean coast 3m
    Iwate-ken 3m
    Miyagi-ken 3m

The least effected areas will be:
The Hokkaido Sea of Japan coast south 0.5m
The Sea of Okhotsk coast 0.5m
    Mutsu-wan 0.5m
    Osaka-fu 0.5m
Hyogo-ken Inland Sea of Seto coast 0.5m
    Hiroshima-ken 0.5m
    Kagawa-ken 0.5m
Ehime-ken Inland Sea of Seto coast 0.5m
Yamaguchi-ken Inland Sea of Seto coast 0.5m
Fukuoka-ken Inland Sea of Seto coast 0.5m
Fukuoka-ken Sea of Japan coast 0.5m
    Nishikata of Nagasaki-ken 0.5m
    Kumamoto-ken Amakusa-nada coast 0.5m

If you're area is not on that list then you are in the middle zone which is expected to get about 1 to 2 meters of water. There are far too many to list. Luckily I live on the west cost of Yamaguchi Ken so no problems

Yeah, I noticed that. Basically every channel has a large graphic overlay showing this. It's interesting watching Olympic figure skating with a tsunami warning taking up 1/3 of the TV. Still, I'd rather be warned on every channel like this than not have a clue!!!

I'm just over the Ara River in Saitama, so I'm probably okay... although I do live pretty close to a flood way river off the Ara. That does worry me slightly.

Fingers crossed that flood river does it's job.

I'm one of those who never watch TV in Japan. The people on it piss me off with their dumb TV shows that do nothing but entertain themselves, not the people watching.

Amazing how a massive earthquake in South America can cause trouble in Japan.

    8.8 centered in Santiago, Chile.

Hawai'i also had a tsunami warning today for the same reason.

Holy shit, are you OK? I saw it on the news today, I hope the government in Chile is taking care of the situation.

I'm ok,. The earthquake took us all by surprise, the damn thing woke us at 3:34 a.m.

It scared the living shit out of me, it felt like being in a major airplane turbulence. It's been nearly 24 hours since it happened and we've had several aftershocks, the strongest one was like 6-7.

So far the goverment are taking good care of the situation, some countries have offered help but the official response of our goverment is that we are prepared for this kind of disaster and that we don't need help (at least for now).

Luckily nothing broke here at my home, but sadly things haven't been so good for other people, bridges and entire buildings have collapsed.

It's crazy to think that the Chile earthquake was a lot stronger but not nearly as destructive as the Haiti quake.

Well, Haiti didn't experience any earthquake in over 200 years until now. Construction down there is just for wind resistance (ie, stiff concrete members), therefore very stiff connections that didn't allow for resistance of such earth quake forces.

Chile, overall, had better construction quality, and that they knew their country has experienced earthquakes at least 50 years ago (fresh in their mind), compared to Haiti. Plus TBH Haiti has a very small building code compared neighboring countries, so the amount of destruction was pretty much 'welcomed' by the poor quality construction/materials.

It's amazing, that in that first picture posted, the bridge support acted like a saw and cut the bridge causing it to fall and make those cars turn over, but the bridge on the other side looks OK.

It's good to hear that everything is fine in your area, Sojiroh. Are there any other members here from Chile?

As for the Tsunami in Japan, well as always it looks like the Japanese were over reacting  I should have known better. So far all I've seen on the news is a few piers washed over with water. No big waves or anything. Pretty much a normal winter in any Seaside town across the UK. Blackpool in winter, anyone?

I'd have to look it up but apparently one way the fuck back (1800's?) that wiped out a lot of Kyushu's population was from an Earthquake in South America.

AFAIK, there are two important factors: the type of Earthquake (up & down or side to side) and more importantly, the population density. The one in mainland China a couple of years back was in the 7's, so ultimately half as powerful as this one (is that right?) but killed shitloads of people.

Obviously how well the buildings are built is important.

Glad to hear you're okay Sojiroh.

Yes I think the Haiti earthquake was quite shallow (nearer to the surface), coupled with the softer ground meant the ripples carried much stronger shock-waves. Either way any Earthquake must be a pretty scary experience.

I've lived in one of the worst Earthquake zones on the planet (Tokyo is very close to 3 fault lines) and I wasn't here for the last kinda big one, which wasn't that big compared to these. Hawaii had one when I lived there, and I was on a plane. I'm doing some serious pounding on wood right now. But, the other ones I've been in are indeed no fun.

Been watching a lot of discovery and whatnot. There's a new theory that plate tectonics may have allowed evolution to speed up exponentially, and can play an important factor in The Drake Equation in calculating the likelihood of intelligent life. So while they do put a dent in local populations every few years, they may be what gave us life in the first place.

Exactly. Nothing at all. they way the Japanese media were going on you'd have expected some big motherfucker of a wave to come crashing down.
