Wait, the drive in the PS2 doesn't use a drive belt? If the PS2 didn't need one, why does the Xbox 360 need one? What was Microsoft thinking? That's just another part that can wear out, and from the sounds of things, designs exist that don't need drive belts!

Anyway, thanks for the tip, I'm hoping it's just that the tray has come of the track. Speaking of donor parts, do you think I would be able to use my v9 PS2's shell with this v3/v4 PS2? It's in really good condition is all. Though I think the v3/v3 has two more screws than my current v9, hmmm.

for the same purpose the xbox and xbox360 dont have disk support caps/mechinisems ( white plastic thing that holds the disk on the spindle as it rotates all disks wobble as they rotate )
    because they are idiots

    No. Shell is completely different.

The belt is for the TRAY motor...

That's because DVD discs have a tight focal distance due to the width of the lenses. That means the lenses have to get VERY close of the disc surface to get the focus.

So if it loses the focus for whatever reason it might touch the disc surface. That's how it makes your disc groovy ... :p

PS2 also suffers of that but since it drives spins at a measly 1x DVD speed, the damage is quite mild.

Okay, so I've got the new PS2 and I've got it apart. Turns out it has a GH-015 motherboard, making it a V5, not a V4 or V3. Is this going to be a problem?

Not much, it's of the kind that blows lasers tracking coils when modded. Just that.

Goddammit. Damn that R on the end of the model number!!

*EDIT* Okay, I've found another PS2 with a SCPH 30002 model number, and this time, there doesn't appear to be an "R" on the end (I've contacted the seller to check). Is there a more reliable way to check if it has a V3 or V4 board? There's a number of AUS SCPH 30002 PS2s, and some are V3 and some V4.

Oh well, I know that this time it's either a V3 or V4, and they're both the best models for mod-chipping right?

I was looking at the GH-015 mainboard, and I notice there's five pairs of solder points labeled "J", "U", "E", "A", and "D". On my board, all these points have nothing soldered into them, except for "A" which has a resistor bridging the two solder points. Call me crazy, but would this be the region setting of the console? "J" being Japan, "U" being USA, "E" being Europe, "A" being Australia and "D" being... Some region starting with D? In that case, couldn't you do a region switch mod like the Mega Drive?

Those points are just ground and are there to identified the MoBo region or type.

Talking about the PS2 blowing the laser tracking coils when modded, can anyone confirm that Sony added a circuit to the v13 pictured below that protects the tracking coils. Something to do with the fact that the tracking coils would blow on the v12 regardless of if it was modded or not. If so then then would this extra circuit also protect the coils on a modded console or is my v13 with DMS Pro SE and no laser fix just an accident waiting to happen?

Then why is fireaza going to so much trouble to find a v4 or below when only v9-v12 are affected models or am I missing something?

Really? That seems excessive, why not just put a sticker or something on it?

These models are suppose to be the most hardy, in addition to be safer to mod chip.
