Funnily enough in a recent interview he emphasized that he had stopped taking drugs altogether. In '96 David Gahan actually died at 4:30am and every night since he's woken up at that time out of habit.

"Your heart stopped in 1996 after you OD'd on a speedball. Do you remember anything from that near-death experience?

What I really felt was this overwhelming feeling of whatever it was I was doing to myself was clearly wrong. And all I really saw was blackness. I was kind of a goner. That was the start of me trying to do something different with my life"

You can see the rest of the Interview in Rolling Stone magazine:

    http://www.rollingstone.com/artists/depechemode/articles/story/8091969/qa_david_gahan

He quit drugs altogether, so I am pretty certain that this is a vicious rumor and not related to fact. Actually, I really hope not as I love Depeche Mode, have been a fan all my life and rushed out to purchase "Sounds of the Universe" when it was released.

I'm due to see them in Glasgow towards the end of the year!

At the risk of sounding unpopular, I'll address the elephant in the room: DM ceased to be when Alan left. And I'll put my DM obsessiveness in high school and college up against anyones, and likely win by a landslide.

As for Dave, it's a bummer, but the guy hasn't been through anything he didn't bring on himself. That's the price all rock stars have to pay.

You know, GaijinPunch is in the right... Depeche Mode took a nosedive after Ultra.

Exciter and Playing the Angel were quite bad.

That being said, I hope the guy is alright. Depeche Mode's music has always been a very important part of my life.

I agree with Xerdo on this issue, every album after ULTRA has been mediocre at best. And well I am going to see them in Parken on the 31. of June (I hope). And well, let us just say I am getting tired of all those fans who hasn´t opened their eyes yet. And seen that the DM is not the fucking same as they used to. Dave´s voice is ruined after so many ways, that you can probably check youtube for clarity on that part with same old songs from different years. PTA and SOTU sucks. Neither of the albums are great, Exciter has four (mayve five , but then I am strectching it to the limit) great songs on it, Freelove , I feel Loved , When The Body Speaks, and let us say the last two are those you think are great. But I could say Dream On as the fourth, fuck knows the last. PTA had one good song on it, and that was the debut single which was called Precious, and then two songs were great live from that album. Suffer Well and A Pain I am Used To. the best songs on SOTU are the bonus songs, and what a fucking drag that is.

For the record, my favorite albums in order:

    A Broken Frame
    Music for the Masses
Violator (just a hair behind Music for the Masses)

The rest up until Violator I can lump together, and those after generally have a track or two I like, but that's about it. My biggest DM regret is that out of all the shows I saw live, I never heard Martin's Little 15 solo (although I got I Want you Know which rocked).

GP, I just hope that I can my fucking money back . If the show is going to get cancelled in Parken. Or else I will be so fucking pissed that I will curse like one who doesn't know English and worse. heck I will probably be cursing and swearing in at least two languages. But Dave is a rich motherfucker so he can afford a good treatment with stem cells if his ticker is off. aka. if his heart is the problem. actually I really do NOT sympathise with him, sorry if I sound cold. But my father has heart problems too, and he is not a rich guy. So if my fathers condition gets worse, then my father (excuse me for swearing here) is fucked beyond repair in comparison.

Violator is one of the all time top albums recorded by a British Band, and up there with some of the best overall. It is so under rated and they were always more famous abroad than at home.

    Ultra is a fantastic album.

Music for the masses was the album that kick started it all for me. I was given a tape of them. That tape was played until it just fell apart.

But, I think it's horses for courses as personally I really like the new album and felt that it marked a return to form. My opinion, you certainly don't have to agree and please for gawd sake I am not getting into a 'I'm a bigger' fan-argument, if you disagree please keep your thoughts to yourself lol.

The best come-back album of recent years was New Order's "Waiting for the Siren's call" and although the new Depeche Mode release doesn't have the same ingenuity and elements of 'surprise', I still love it and think 'In sympathy', 'Corrupt' and 'Jezebel' are fantastic tracks that would hold their own.

Whatever happened, I just hope he gets better as frankly I have a concert ticket here I want to use (selfish reasons I realise) and not have to say 'I almost saw Depeche Mode', having missed them a while back. :eek:h:

Maybe in miscellaneous European countries, but in North America, while they were big, there were plenty that were bigger. I don't think there albums were released in the states until The Singles, at which point the back catalogue was available.

I need to check out the New Order album. As I've gotten older, I've come to appreciate New Order a bit more than before.... although Temptation from Substance has pretty much been my favorite song since college. Me and a friend played that as loud as it would go when we took our first real ecstacy. Man, it was fucking awesome... it was like I had just learned how to jack off all over again.

Skip track one 'Who's Joe?' and forever ignore it, and go straight to 'Hey now what you doing'. Whomever decided on the track order should have been shot as the album kicks off on the weakest New Order track you ever heard! If you skip it though, you'll probably (like me) find yourself sitting down and not moving until the album ends! Love it!

"Guilt is a useless emotion" imho is a storming track and deserves far more airplay, but the single 'Krafty' was more dance orientated and in 'Everything must be feel good' fucking Britain, good songs often don't get to be singles until you have a dance remix.

I was too young first time around to get them, so thank God for an older brother. He played and played Substance over & over and I grew to love 'Blue Monday'. At the time I was a 'rocker' and a few weeks after realising how amazing 'Blue Monday' was I cut my hair short and just changed into a different human being!

    O-k-a-y!

it looks like Dave just had the Revenge of Monte Zuma. or stomach problems. But hey having the runs can still get you in serious trouble.

Ah, he must have read this: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/8047321.stm for those unable to access UK News, it's basically this

"Men really do have an excuse for supposedly being wimpy about coughs and colds - their immune systems are not as strong as women's, research suggests" (BBC News)

    Man flu really does exist!
