Braders 1986 I was thinking really hard last night when I was at the bed and one thing just pop up in my mind. As you saying about TR beta has sound in around 1995 which you may heard, well you are probably correct ! If you were around 1997 to 2000 searching Tomb Raider betas on internet back then, there was one video that I can remember and it is Tomb Raider Work in Progress 1995 on PC with Braid and red sunglasses that has the sound like footstep and Lara voice if she jump the air but the video is different what we seen today though ! There another same video on youtube of Tomb Raider Work in Progress 1995 but the sound is disable so it have one of those TR theme sound at background so I believed which you may got mixed up at the first place. Here the video I just uploaded now- I believed this what you have been seen. This video is not mine. I downloaded this off the youtube last year since I cannot find the original user who upload this ! I'm not saying this originally has sound in the first place, it may have been edit but I don't know. I can say one thing on condition , comparing with the Tomb Raider beta on Sega Saturn (I used to own) the footstep sound is different to Sega saturn final build. The video which I just upload, the footstep sound it seems to be same as Final build. There was alot of TR Beta/Alpha Information, video and picture used to be existed on internet in 2000's and now it long gone because the Collector are moved on and nobody truly know real info. I can remember the owner did mention about TR WIP 95 did have the sound and again there was another owner who also said TR WIP 95 does not build with the sound. Same owner did mention previously about existing of TR2 alpha on Sega Saturn with Floppy disc but with only little evidence with Video/pictures. So it hard to get the correct information. So you decide. EDIT Just read Decapitated comment. Damn, I just got exited then. EDIT Found the original video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mUw1YrFQ0bI As stated in his description box.
Hmmm :confused-new:. I have either seen that video or something similar. I really couldn't say. I highly doubt I have seen any videos you guys on here wouldn't of also seen though. We first got internet at my school when I was around 12 (1998 ish), I remember downloading incredibly short video clips of various games and putting on floppy disk to take home and watch. Definitely a couple of Tomb Raider ones. The internet was so new to me back then, I have no idea what websites I used. The only one that really stands out in my mind was the Biohazard 1 co-op video.
^ Interesting Were you original member from www.Undergroundbeta.com many years ago. That site got shut down in late 2001. Does that ring any bell to you ? As you saying about Biohazard 1 co-op videos and pictures was existed in Undergroundbeta along with all other prototype Tomb Raider stuff that not on internet today. I was there at the time as I upload some TR beta stuff there. Yes Internet was so new and it felt unreal but connection is so freaking slow if downloading the screenshot. Floppy disc was a nightmare.
Oh it was slow alright. Countless hours spent on the library computers just trying to get a few pics of some boobies lol. 'The site name really doesn't ring any bells dude to be honest. Could very well be the one though. Christ knows!' God bless CD-R
The very old beta shown by Planet Lara a few years ago had sound effects. You couldn't hear them in the videos they recorded but they did upload them separately. They're completely different from the final version sound effects. http://nonametr.zzl.org/TR1betas/betalevelsoundeffects.zip
1 Interesting, i just converted the sound effects in an unused folder in the July beta. It seems that they are all identical to the ones your posted, same filenames but they are very lossy hence the low filesize and 1 or 2 are missing. It looks like there's code left over to load these sounds externally so CORE were experimenting with externally loading sound files I wonder if it's possible to enable them. The August and July beta use the same sound wad and i wrote an unpacker so i could view the sounds individually. However, none of the sound effects from the early beta are in the sound wad. ----------------------------------- 2 I have noticed some minor sound differences in the July/August wad for example: SOUND 23: The wolf howl is longer than the final. SOUND 33: Unused "Ouch"? SOUND 47: Shotgun SFX is different from final. SOUND 49: Lara push block moan is different from final. SOUND 50: Lara push block moan 2 slightly different from final? SOUND 57: Unknown unused? There may be others different or unused but I'm not that familiar ----------------------------------- 3 Decided to make a different unpacker for the August rolling demo SFX there are also some minor differences: LEVEL2.SND SOUND 38: Unused "ouch"? SOUND 54: Lara push block moan is different from final. SOUND 56: Lara push block moan 3 (very heavy) not used in final. TITLE.SND SOUND 2: Strange unused sound. ------------------- That is all ;/
Awesome video, thanks a lot for sharing! By the way, do you have an updated list of known Tomb Raider betas? I saw in some old posts a list with red/green items, and the last one said there were no known Tomb Raider 4 betas. If that's not the case anymore, this is a great find indeed! I haven't seen the development of this thread lately, so I am a bit lost about which new updates are there in the betas department.
Yeah that list is rather out dated and there's not been much stuff going on lately what so ever. I know i have an updated one somewhere which should be outdated as i stopped updating it I'll try scavenge and find it if i still have it or I'll update the old list. I've been working on a few Tomb Raider projects which I've probably not posted on here. One of which was a PORT of Tomb Raider Unfinished Business from PC to PS1, as it was a PC exclusive. It works excellent and was fun to work on however, hacking the game can be a nightmare. This isn't really beta related but oh well. Tomb Raider Unfinished Business PS1 -- The Times Beta Demo This is a beta of "The Times Exclusive" demo for Tomb Raider 4 only released on PC but it's for PSX. Tomb Raider 4 Test Level 1 (October 1999) This is similar to the test level previously shown but slightly different in level layout and contains a new selection of enemies which are featured in the final. It was probably used to test the enemies and how they react when Lara is in certain places still interesting, I also play around with the camera angle. Tomb Raider 4 Test Level 2 (October 1999) A brand new test level for Lara Croft, it was used to test bike Physics and items, objects of what Lara can interact with. This test level can also be seen in a Core Design interview video but it's slightly different and contains a bike unlike this one. Enjoy these were excellent to play with.
Course you can http://theisozone.com/dl-start/40150/1/ Bare in mind, Sound does not exist in this version. you need to have PS1 emulator to run this ISO Enjoy the game.
Isn't the Chronicles beta the one that was accidentally sold in the UK a few weeks before it's proper release date? Depending on how many of them sold, and if it's the same as the one you have, it could indeed be worth a fair few quid.
