I'm sure a lot of people are done with the series... Hell, even I was ready to accept the death toll for THPS back when Tony Hawk RIDE was first revealed, not to mention how EA's SKATE had already stolen the crown for most people. Even if RIDE had been successful, I'd already lost interest when they showcased the board controller... and to this day, I've never tried the game at all, and can't be bothered even for the $15 price tag I've seen it at. I'm still a massive fan of the older games, and play them somewhat regularly. I don't have a lot of faith in Robomodo (the current developer), but when Tony Hawk's Pro Skater HD came out, I purchased it, if only to support future traditional THPS titles. Despite failing to live up to even THPS2x on the original Xbox, THPS HD showed that they were at least on the right track. After a long wait, Robomodo is actually working on Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 5. The title alone triggered the nostalgic nerd in me, even though I see no reason to deny the existence of THUG-THP8, since they were mostly great games (subjective, I know). Part of me is pretty certain that this game won't be a worthy successor to even THPS4, but I don't care; I'm going to let myself be excited for it. They already won huge points with me when they announced that the park editor is finally making a full return, and that they're adding features like floating objects (you could do this with glitches in the past anyway, but it's nice to know they're making it a standard function). Create-a-Skater is confirmed as well, not that any of the games ever had a particularly noteworthy tool in that regard. Anyway... a bit of a rant. Any other THPS lovers still lurking around here?
So far, most comments online are either from people who want a new SKATE instead, or from people who think the graphics look horrible. I'm not going to argue the latter point, but if we're already pretending that it's actually the fifth game in the series, then it's at least a visual improvement to THPS4! Besides, the visuals have always had very little impact on my enjoyment of this franchise.
I still remember playing the THPS demo disc to death back in the day, literally cooked a playstation with it. lol Loved the original through the 4th title , then kinda lost interest...
I'm cautiously optimistic, I'd love for it to be great, but the last few THPS games have been...less than stellar. And what does a new SKATE game have to do with this? If anything, THPS 5 succeeding might encourage EA to make another one.
The series still boasts some of my favorite soundtracks. As long as it's more like THPS2, and completely giving the finger to that buggy board controller, I'm fine with it.
I know that it's not going to happen, but if they would release the new Tony Hawk game on the Vita, it would be amazing. The old Tony Hawk games worked well on the PSP, but the Vita has a smaller player base and there is probably no money to be made, so that's the main reason I think that it won't make it on handhelds.
^I definitely wish the handheld Tony Hawk games would have continued. Even the original DS games were pretty decent. THUG2 Remix on PSP was great, too.
I pretty much lost interest in the series after 3. I thought 1, 2, and 3 were all great games. I played 4 a little and didn't like it very much, and I haven't played any of the other games because they didn't seem very good, plus I guess 4 made me not want to play any of the newer games. I think 3 is my favorite.
^Pro Skater 3 definitely was the quintessential title of the series. It pretty much perfected the gameplay, and from that point on, it was all just embellishment. As for me, though, I just enjoyed the games so much that I kept wanting to see new features year after year. I was particularly interested in the "create-a-modes" when THUG came out, because players could basically make their own THPS games at that point. Unfortunately, they stopped really developing those features by American Wasteland (removed create-a-goal, and recycled THUG2's park editor). This article made some interesting claims about the park editor in THPS5, though: http://www.gameinformer.com/b/features/archive/2015/05/25/7485080.aspx?PostPageIndex=2 "...Free-skate objectives and multiplayer modes can be added to your park, and any XP, Style Cards, etc. earned in these creations can be applied on your character." Not sure what is meant by "free-skate objectives," but if it means that some form of goals can be made in created parks, then I'd be very happy. That's the only article I've read to mention something like that, though, so I'm not going to get too excited.
I liked 4, and THUG had an actual story, which was good. I didn't really play any of them since then though.
I own all the console THPS games except for UG1 and the worst Neversoft TH game, American Wasteland. I'm lukewarm because without Neversoft behind the helm I have 0 excitement or hype. They knew how to make THPS better than any other team, so they MADE the TH games for me. I'll likely check it out, but I don't have any positive expectations. To me it's just Activision rekindling and milking their old franchises they almost ran into the ground with yearly releases, a la Guitar Hero. Neversoft partially merged with Infinity Ward, which Activision owns. Too bad they can't pull them away from CoD long enough to give us another TH game. EDIT: IIRC, THPS3 is one of the highest rated video game of all time according to MetaCritic. THPS2 is still the fan favorite for the overdue inclusion of the manual. Most THPS2 players remember the joy of the first 1,000,000 point combo they pulled off.
Thps2 is one of the best game I ever played. The levels, the gameplay, the manuals, spiderman, everything was right. I never really played thps3, but afaiu it was similar but with reverts, which I'm lukewarm about. I liked to play thps4 at first, but I slowly lost interest and never finished it, or went back to play it. I play thps2 all the time, whether on DC or emulators.
Box art was recently revealed! I must say, I couldn't help but smile when I saw this: I recognize Aaron 'Jaws' Homoki's name! Saw the video of him gapping that ridiculous staircase years ago. He also had a deck design that I was particularly fond of: http://www.nativeskatestore.co.uk/i...er-skateboard-deck-8-0-p15291-34849_image.jpg
Not only rad games but they had killer soundtracks too! Playing the pro skaters as a kid honestly got me into "real" music. And Crazy Taxi igniting my love for The Offspring too! Damn those were the days...
