This one was very hard for me to put together as there was a tonne of awesome albums this year 1. Finntroll - Ur Jordens Djup 2. Sonata Arctica - Unia 3. Explosions in the Sky - All the Sudden I Miss Everyone 4. Soilwork - Sworn To A Great Divide 5. Do Make Say Think - You, You're a History in Rust 6. 65daysofstatic - The Destruction of Small Ideas 7. Paradise Lost - In Requiem 8. Ensiferum - Victory Songs 9. Sigh - Hangman's Hymn 10. Pig Destroyer - Phantom Limb and it has no number for it is god within music Dethklok - The Dethalbum Unia and Ur Jordens Djup were hard. they are both pretty much my favorites and i listen to them constantly. and only 1 and 2 are in order. all the rest were just thrown on as i remembered
I got Victory Songs and it's great, but I didn't like Unia at all, I don't like the way Sonata Arctica is taking in the last couple of albums BTW, I would add Dublin Death Patrol - DDP 4 Life, Manowar - Gods Of War and Symphony X - Paradise Lost:020:
The only two albums that I listened to that were released this year were Circa Survive's "On Letting Go" (which is all kinds of ironic for reasons I won't get into) and Between the Buried and Me's "Colors." On Letting Go was quite good, but in no way does it stand up to CS's first album. Their first album (Juturna) was no less than a masterpiece of music. Between the Buried and Me have changed a lot, but Colors is a good direction for them. Not to mention, the album was amazing.
I havn't heard much from Between the Buried and me (discovered them a few days ago) but I thought Alaska was a better album. Sworn to a Great Divide is a fantastic album, especially the first 4 songs. Porcupine Tree's Fear of a Blank Planet isn't too bad, but I've only heard 2 songs from it, so I need to pick that up soon, once the Holidays are over.
I have to agree. When Reckoning Night came out a while ago, it just did not have the same *magic* that captured me ala Silence and Winterheart's Guild. Those two albums are the essence of Sonata Arctica. Ecliptica also is pretty damn good. BTW - did Jani Liimatainen record guitars on Unia?...or was he booted before recording began?
I'm pretty sure a lot of that doesn't count as "modern music" and I'm pretty sure it's a personal top 10.
Good choices, but as usual you'll probably end up being criticised due to it being very much a 'personal opinion'. EDIT: For those who haven't heard of them, don't worry. They're not famous outside their field, they're not commercial and it's perfectly understandable not to have heard of them if you're not into metal.
How could I forget about Brand New? This album was absolutely fantastic. @opethfan: I think that Between the Buried and Me have put out consistently good albums with the exception of Alaska. I understand a lot of people cite that as their favored album, but I see it as more of a transition from their hardcore roots to a more progressive sound.
I bought a lot of CD's this year, but I think the only ones I got that were put out this year was Marilyn Mansons and Mayhems.
Theres only 2 albums that need to be spoken about this year: Arctic Monkeys - Favourite Worst Nightmare Nine Inch Nails - Year zero
saying this shows your ingnorance toward music as a whole. In won't personnally do a list, since it's simply impossible, but i can say that both Ire Works and In rainbows are up there.
I don't think steadster is ignorant to music, I'm guessing he's like me and mostly listens to older stuff.
Thats the wrong thing to say to someone with a music collection of over 12000 songs, the vast majority of which I know and love I have heard a lot of the music that was released this year, but in my mind these 2 albums are by far the best, hence my comment
