I asked this over at the SRK Forums...... but I can't stand that whole crowd. I figure it'd be better to ask here. Since Nobody here is an asshole and you know your shit.

I play a lot video games with the kids in my youth group I decided since I'm getting the best sticks I can I'd train them in fighting games.

    2d fighters to be exact.

I thought Marvel VS Capcom 2 would be a good starting point since it's kind of a masher has some depth but isn't so deep it over whelming.

But what else should I start them out on? They've played fighters with me before but were over whelmed the most we play is Battle Stadium DON which bores the hell out of me.

Street Fighter 3, 3rd strike for sure. It's simple enough that two people who've never played it before can learn it quick, but has enough depth that you can show the intricacies of a good fighting engine.

Yeah that's what they said at SRK that or CVS 2

They can play Soul Calibur no problem but need to learn more about the systems to be more than mashers.

Now.....if only there were a Samurai Shodown Anthlogy.

I'd rear them on Shodown 2.

street fighter 2. the basics of that game are able to and are the foundation for todays 2D fighters. The tactics and way the game is played, still the same today for other 2D fighters.

Garou is a really good game and easy to get in to and learn some of the good combos. Its one of the best SNK games really. Next I would say SF2 to start things off with since its really easy to start on then after switch to Street fighter III 3rd strike since its regarded the best fighting game to date and the most played by the hardcore.

yeah and one of my friends could easily cosplay as Rock if he so chose. and I'm a brown jacket and hair bleaching away from being Terry.

I dunno about KOF MI 2 I like it and it's quite mashy dunno if that's good to teach them on though.

I dunno, after playing the later instalments (sp?) I feel SF2 is too slow and rigid... maybe if you use it as a starting point, you won't mind. Personally, I'd go for one of the SF Alpha games.

Either Street Fighter 2, since its a classic but still good, or Last Blade, my personal favorite 2d fighter

What are you training them for? Competitions? Beyond KOF, most SNK games aren't deep enough for competition play.

I think MvC2 is still the best competition game, maybe followed by the later Guilty Gears. Also if you're playing correctly, no games are button mashers!

    I say Guilty Gear (XX/)

You see my last girlfriend never showed any interest in fighting games at all. (infact almost no games - cept DS trash) Anyway, she saw me playing guilty gear once and she was all over it. She just kept saying how pretty it was, and I figure that GG XX is probably the best looking fighter out there at the moment, and if you are looking to get someone interested - graphics are a good place to start.

On top of that it will teach them a real variety of stick techniques.

But as you say a bit of a masher might be the best place to start before trying to get them into really technical fighters.

With that in mind, try a Vampire/Darkstalker game. Easy combos, generous timing and the system does not get in the way of a novice learning.

    Ok I've narrowed it down.

They LOVED playing Soul Calibur III yesterday. So I'm going with that for 3d.

I was shocked to see how simple it was to do supers in Melty Blood Act Cadenza and also saw it has a pretty deep engine amongst that simplicty plus comboing is super easy to do. I'm Considering getting them into this one.

    Also thinking of Garou.

Hope you don't run into the bugs in SC3. I still like the first over all the rest.

I've yet to encouter them but they sure are amusing I've seen the videos.

But yeah as for 2d fighters I'm leaning towards Garou and Melty Blood. I need to Learn how to play Melty Blood my self though.
