I have an original japanese SCPH-1000 (serial under 6 million),
but the PCB is damaged (it only boots, when I bend it a little bit, otherwise it hangs) - the laser surprisingly still works :)

Is it possible, to buy a european SCPH-1002 and replace the various chips and the BIOS ROM from the damaged SCPH-1000 PCB to make it japanese again?

The SCPH-1000 is really I think a collectors item, as it is seen with less frequency on Ebay than Yarozes go - and now, there have been really many many Debuggers (not only from Assemblergames) on Ebay.

If anyone knows, what chips are needed to replace on the target PCB (also GH-7 board), to keep the video output NTSC (not PAL) and to have it work just as my old SCPH-1000?

Well, I recently had a look at an SCPH-1002 PCB - posted some info in another thread for madhatter I think - and IIRC what you need to do is:

    - change pin 7 on the RGB encoder chip to output "real" NTSC
    - desolder the cap/rezzie on the country jumpers (near the back of the
    board) from EU to JP
-switch the BIOS chips around, shouldnt be too hard if its the same chip, it's
    DIP I think
-and the hard part... swap the GPU. Its one of the big Sony chips with LOADS of pins :smt009

I think it would be way too much trouble to do it.

Like Anti mentioned, it won't be easy.

    Hello,

It might be worth checking the motherboard with a magnifier to see where the motherboard is cracked and reinforce it where the crack is and then put some solder on the tracks which are cracked to reinforce then but you need a really tiny iron.

Indeed if the crack(s) is/are under some chips it might be more difficult.

But don't try to desolder chips like you mention in first post, a little too much heat and the chips are gone or good.

    Cheers

I've done a lot of work on early model psx . You can swap boards and lasers from almost every model up to and including 120x.

looks like I will need to get hold of 240 VAC PSU from early PAL PS models. :(

anyone with spare 220/240 VAC PSU for SCPH-100x or 200x series?

    cheers

Any PSX repair site will have 3rd party PSUs, it's nearly impossible to get official repair pieces.

the thing is early PS has more wires in the PSU cable than later one. Later one after, say 5500 has about 4-5 wires whereas DTL-2100 has about 6-7 wires... ???

Oh. You'll have to use a meter and find your own points for the extra pins then.

or you can get the universal board that fits any machine, and auto senses voltage range

look at the pics here - ok they're out of stock, but see what I mean? Auto switching 100-240V or whatever, and see the 2 different connectors?

I've installed these before. I installed one in a US unit so it could be used over here. The unit was then shipped back to the states, where it is still working years later.

Sorry to go a bit OT here, but what's that DC output on the back for? I've only ever had a 5502 myself, which only has the Multi-AV and serial outputs...

That's phono/RF. At least thats what it says on the US system and it looks exactly like that.

What, is it a power supply for the RF adaptor? That could make sense, but then again the only RF adaptors I've seen go totally through the multi-AV out (pin 10 is +5V as well). I've only seen the PAL I/G UHF adaptors though.

It says "DC output" in Japanese on that one, but doesn't say what for...

dj: I have a PSU from a European SCPH-1002 lying about here (in fact I have a whole gutted SCPH-1002 bar the lens). I wouldn't mind letting go of it, maybe a trade for some other spare parts? Spare parts I'm looking for is:

-a PS laser that fits a SCPH-5500 (any will do I think) that works
    -a first-gen Saturn powerboard

Or a Saturn game or something. Cash is fine, too, send me a PM, I'm sure we could agree on a fair price.
