Basically, here is my scenario: I have been dating my girlfriend for the last two years, and I was planning on proposing on our third anniversary (or around it). Anywho, she told me her ring size before, but I forgot. I think it was either a 9 or a 12. What is a good way to get her ring size without making her suspicious? I don't want to ask her mother, since she is the type that would tell my girlfriend about it. I don't know any of her friends well enough to ask, so that option is out.

My thought was to ask her around her birthday or christmas, since I do not plan on getting the ring until at least January. Still, I want to start looking around now just to get a idea.

Steal one of her rings and see what size it is. That's what I'd do.

Yeah, steal a ring and have it correctly sized at a jewelers, with a ring of the same band thickness as the ring you have in mind. Oh and needless to say make sure the ring is on the right finger (and that it fits)

However on a serious note, it is a really important item of jewelry so I am not sure whether she might appreciate choosing it with you. Unless you go for a really simple ring you might not get it quite right. I have a really specific taste in jewelry so I would be a little uncomfortable to receive a ring that did not suit me.

My advice would be to get her a ring and do what you can to get the size right, but it is not the end of the world if you have to get it re-sized to her finger. I don't think she will object to that if she is willing to marry you!

Unless she has extremely large fingers, it's totally not a 12. The rings I (a male) wear on the third and fourth fingers of the left hand are about 9-10ish. By comparison, my pinky fingers are about a 5.

    LOL, he's marrying Chewbacca!

Get a ring gauge. Then use chloroform and you'll be able to measure it. Or just do so really carefully when she's asleep.

Get a girlfriend or her mother to find out for you.

But then she'll know someone's interested in her ring size... potential surprise ruiner.

If you're really not sure, you can always do "The Frodo" - give the ring to her on a gold chain necklace.

Wait til she is asleep and then use a length of string to make the measurement. Wrap it around her finger, mark it where it meets and then ask a jeweler what size that would be.

Make sure that you buy from a reputable jeweler who will resize as part of the price or take a return if she would like something different.

Last time I asked about it at a jewelery shop they told me resizing a ring costs around 30/40 euros which is not too bad, so maybe just ask how much it would cost at your local dealer to resize it afterworths and then just buy what you think will fit.
I didn't steal her ring to check the size just took it when she was sleeping, checked on what finger of mine it fits best and then tried the rings in the shop on that specific finger... if she doesnt take them off while sleeping you can even joke around and ask her if you can check how her ring would look on your finger or something and to cover up ask if you can borrow one of her dresses as well at the same time :p

This is a guess, I'm not sure if this would work.

Get your finger sized, and then take a picture of the two of you holding hands so that both your ring fingers are visible for a size comparison. A good jeweler would likely be able to get pretty good idea of her ring size by using your finger as a benchmark. Ask the jeweler if it is possible to do it this way :)

My brother simply got the ring, and then had it resized after.

Cut off her finger and take it in!

I would definitely pick the ring instead of involving her. Just go for something classic and simple, she could always swap it if it is really not her cup of tea, but I am guessing you will know the kind of thing she would want after knowing her so long. It is much more special if it came from you and you spend time deciding on it.

It is easier to make it smaller than bigger, so lean on a slightly bigger ring. Making it bigger stretches out the ring, unless they add a piece, which sometimes looks a bit ugly.

How tall is she, and how slim? My wife says that a 6 or so would probably be closer to the mark if she is young and slim. If you could take a ring of hers in that you know she wears on her ring finger then obviously that is the ideal senario.

If she drinks, you could try getting her drunk then just measure it

It would prove much easier to get her drunk and measure it if she doesn't drink.. ;-)

    I asked my soon-to-be-at-the-time sister-in-law.
I think I win for most hyphens in a post ever.
