Hi all, This tutorial is for those people who want to run their PS3's with an external PSU to reduce heat.

    Q/A:

    OK Lets get started :D

    Parts:

    1* 360 203w PSU
    1* Xbox 360 Female PCB connector (OR use this -> http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/AC-Adapt...o_Game_Accessories&hash=item3f086231fc&_uhb=1 )

    Wire and soldering stuffs

    Steps:

1> Disassemble your beast of a PS3 down the the mainboard (Each model is a little different).

2> Acquire a female Xbox 360 Power socket (It takes a lot of heat to de-solder one)

Here is the pin out of the connector.

And from the bottom (PSU = PSon/3vrtn)

    3>

Solder 4 wires to the connector (The extra 12v is for an AUX connection for lights ect. / See misc.)

    1* Ground
    1* 12 volt
    1* 5 volt
    1* PSon

    4>

Solder the 12v + GROUND to the PS3's motherboard

    Pinouts

    4a>

Insulate the 12v Post Connector (I just used heat-shrink)

    4b>
Now you can put the mid-chassis and heatsink back on.
Route the wires as so. (The extra wire is GROUND for our STB Connection)

    5> The STB connector ! :D

Here is the PinOut Pretty easy eh?

***NOTE*** This is for the 5 pin variant (60gb/40GB and SOME 80GB models)

    ---------

    (Just the bottom half)

    5a>

Now we want too Cut up the STB cable like so.

    2 wires for 5vcc
    2 wires for GROUND
and 1 wire for 3vrtn / PSon (Turns the PSU on from Standby)

    -------------------------------

(Our humble connector is unaware it is about to meet it's DOOOOOOMMMMMMMM, MWWWAHAHAHAHA!!1)

    *snip no more babies :p

Ground (Going back to the 12v connector)

Then do the same for the GROUND[black], 5v[red] and PSon[blue])

    -------------------------------------------------

    6>

Now mount the 360 pcb connector (I screwed it in where the original mains was)[It's a bit ugly but holds in place nice and tight]

    7>

Now just resemble and you are ready to Rock and Roll :D

    MISC

Because the 360 connector has many 12v pins we can also use some to hook up an auxiliary power terminal for a (future) easy install of lights, fans and/or other cool mods.

Here is how I mounted mine.

    Just testing...

All glued down, Ahh, hot glue.. the elixir of life

And this how the inside of the case looks. (Note the wi-fi antenna is modified to an sma connector for an external antenna)

And all working and put back together :D Complete with stealth paint job haha)

    (back)

    end TUT

Would also be quite handy for those fat PS3's that have a little tendency to have the power supply blow which can be costly, 360 PSU's are plentiful thanks to the Xenon through Falcon Red Ring disaster.

Like this! I'd mod mine up, if I still had one.

Would be fun to see what someone could cram into the space where the PSU was.

now if you could mod and on / off switch into the xbox 360 psu that'd be great.

Like for mains? Because this method will switch between standby and on (Orange > Green)

For mains you could just put one of these on the 'hot' wire.

@LeHaM, awesome tutorial! Thank you very much for it.
But can you give me (and for some europe and some parts of asia xbox users) some advice about using 220 x360 power supply?

Here is my own power supply:

    Here is my ps3:

With my hardware what will be different in your tutorial? What things i will need to do different way than yours 110 power supply and 60 gb ps3 (my ps3 have different "body" with card reader and ect)?

It should be the same, unless I'm missing something. The output is still DC!

Plus LeHaM is in Australia which means he most likely used a PAL PSU as well.

The 40GB has two versions! A 5 pin version and a 4 pin version (1 less ground I believe ).. Just check the pinout beforehand, It will work fine as the 60GB pulls the most power all systems after that pull less so the PSU is more than enough.

Friendly advice: you don't want to try that with CECHAxx, CECHBxx, CECHCxx and CECHExx, because the original power supply is rated for 32 AMPs at 12V while the XBOX360 PSU is rated for a little more than half that much.

I was all excited to try this if the broken PS3 I bought off ebay has a dead PSU, but it's a CECHA so I guess not :c

IDK it could be rated for that but the system may only need x amount..

Excellent work would you consider doing this as a modding service if someone wanted it done?
