i have a few CECHA01, and a couple CECHE01 consoles that i would like to modify to use an external psu, i have a spare OCZ 80+ bronze 550watt ATX psu that has 38A on the +12v rails, im not sure if this is to much for the ps3, im not sure if the ps3 has a voltage regulator built in to only use the amount it needs, but i like the idea of using the xbox 360 female power adapter at the rear of the console, makes it easy to move the console around and its made tough so you dont have to worry about smaller wires getting caught on things when you slide the console around to plug in like hdmi cables, or move it to dust/clean around the unit, i have a spare xbox 360 xenon, with the 203watt psu that i want to hack up to use with an atx power supply and one of my older ps3's i may use some of your guide to test this, but basically you have the atx psu- then route the power and ground cables from the psu to the male end of the 360 psu plug, then just solder up the female port inside the ps3, should be like yours just with an atx psu

If I read your post right, the mod you want to do is pretty easy.
what I would do is, desolder all the wires out of the psu (the ATX UNIT and just the low side wires [12v atx connectors ect])
THEN solder in the xbox Male connector with the lead directly into the Atx PsU Pcb, it should look very neat and tidy.
You will now have a PSU that will run every 360 (even XDKs), a project like that will make a great bench supply for someone who fixes consoles

I have a cecha01 PS3 with a dead power supply and a dead xbox for the female port and spare 203watt 16.5amp Xbox Power supply. I know the cecha01 APS-226 power supply is rated at 32amps, and have seen some people swap to the newer ps3 power supply rated at 23.5 amps in some fat PS3's. Will the 16.5 amps the Xbox PS provides be enough for the cecha01? I've found info on the wattage the PS3 will use, but nothing on the max amps it will draw. I'd love to be able to get my PS3 working with parts I already have.

Can't speak for the 360 power supply but I once tried using a 40gb PS3 power supply in a 60gb PS3 and it would shut off during gaming, probably because it wasn't powerful enough.

Well that's discouraging. I wish I didn't jump the gun and remove that female port from the Xbox motherboard. What a pain!! Haha. Even though I had a dead Xbox and a high temp gun, looking back I'd just buy the cable adapter.
Perhaps I should dig up one of my old PC power supplies

    Those ratings are MAX BTW.
Would be interesting to see exactly how much current is drawn under full system load. All the lab power supplies I have access too are only 10amps max :(

I realize its the max, I just dont know if the maximum the xbox PS puts out is enough for the PS3 at full load. I suppose I can just go ahead and try it. if I have problems wire up a spare atx instead

Just curious, did this help anyone who had a PS3 prone to the YLOD? I've got one that's BC, and it runs for a while, but gets hot nearly YLOD-ing again, and just wondered if this mod has actually helped anyone save theirs.

Well I got everything together and gave it a test. Unfortunately the PS3 doesnt turn on or do anything and Xbox PS gave me a red light which means there is a short somewhere. The PS works when I try it with the Xbox, and im sure its wired correctly. The PS3 would at least try to boot up with the old PS. I'm going to take apart the Xbox female connector and make sure there is no solder bridging anything, then recheck all the soldered connections. I don't know what else it could be.
I would post pictures, but it doesn't seem I can. I'll upload and link to them another time

Any idea how to get this to work with a ps3 slim? Got it working perfect with my fat but having trouble with my slim.
I can get it into standby but it looks like the 3vrtn is too delayed and isn't kicking the psu 12v on fast enough.
    Pinout is:
    1. +5V DC 2. GND 3. ACDC_STBY (power switch, 0V-standby,3,3V-on) 4. ACIN_DET (Also +5V). Just to add the same wiring works for my atx to xbox 360 psu which has the 12v constantly on. Sorry for the huge mass of text. Thanks

So can anyone confirm if this works on a launch 60 GB US PS3? Or is the issue in half the wattage going to be an issue?

If it's an issue, is there any other good guides out there on getting the internal PSU out of there? I feel like I'm lucky my launch PS3 still works and I want it working forever for that sweet PS2 compatibility (plus it's still on the 3.55 firmware); I already replaced the thermal paste very cleanly but my PS3 still sounds like a jet engine when doing anything on it. I think removing the power supply would finally ease my mind but I don't want it to slowly ruin my PS3 if the XBOX 360 power supply isn't really sufficient so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hey mb2010, how'd you end up fixing your problem with the fat ps3 not turning on? I'm in the exact spot as you.
