Hey Guys, 1st. Can the original playstation read CDRWs? I tried googling for this information and I did a search of the entire forum and found the following thread: CD-RWs on a PSOne? However the question was ever answered in the thread. Can a PSX, PSOne, or Playstation Debugger system read a CDRW? Reason for asking is I've started working on a simple game for the playstation and I want to be able to test it on real hardware. I bought 200 CD-Rs at K-mart for next to nothing, however if I could just go buy a single CDRW and use it for lets say 25 burns, I'd rather do that, especially on the early staging on programming where I'm going to be doing quite a bit of experimenting with the code. Now I don't have my Playstation Debugger System yet, but hopefully, hopefully, it will get here tomorrow and I will be able to just try this out myself to see if it works. I was just wondering if anyone knew for sure, or if someone could check to see if the original playstation's could read CDRWs. 2nd. And I realize this is really two questions in one, but where can I get the parts to replace the laser in my playstations if I need to and how difficult is it to install? Thanks Disjaukifa
1/ CD-RW discs generally stress drives, and typically won't work on a PlayStation either way. Find other ways to test, like emulators, until you're ready to burn properly. The advantage there is that emulators like pSX have debug capabilities that can assist you. 2/ The cheapest replacement lasers are from second hand PSX units. Unit-only they should be close to free.
Thanks for the info! Another question for you though! Can an emulator read a CDRW . . . I don't see why it can't . . . I've looked online for replacement lasers and they are cheap, however there are several different models, so I'll just need to be careful to get the correct model or maybe someone can point out to me the "best" replacement model to get! Thanks Disjaukfia
If your working on PS1, Look into alternatives like Gold Finger (if your PC can support the required card). This way you can upload new elf directly into the ps1 with out having to create new CDs. As for how to do it, my memory is fuzzy, it's been a really really long time since I did ps1 games. =P
How do I load games through Gold Finger??? I've never heard of that before. I'll see if I can locate a tutorial for it. Thanks Disjaukifa
I don't fully remember. =S All I remember is it involved a PC Com card and a small app to do the transfer. Pretty simple to use when it was setup and you had the added bonus of snooping vram by hitting the reset button on the ps1 then going into vram viewer on the gold finger.
Well I'm going to keep looking for more information on how to do this. If you remember or find any thing please post!!! Thanks!!! Disjaukifa

Uh, yeah. Assuming your PC's drive can read a CD-RW disc then of course the emulator will read from it. Emulators will load from iso or even executables, though, so you wouldn't need to burn in the first place. How cheap? Like I say, just buying another PSX of the same model to scrap for parts is bound to be the cheapest option. Whenever I've seen spares on ebay or wherever they're always ridiculously priced.
I rather not buy another Playstation Debugger Station for parts. I'm hoping that if the laser ever does go bad, I can just use another laser from a different system. I looked last night and I could get brand new laser assemblies for about $8 ~ $10 which is worth the money in my book . . . -Disjaukifa
Hmmm I know some people will suddenly shout "you fucking pirate , get the fuck out of here", but what about modding the PSX, or a PS2 with a chip ? then you can always use the CDr, or is it illegal to say modchip to the playstations now, over there ?
I've considered that, but I've had a heck of a time finding a modchip I can get that will allow me to boot my own code. I've been hesitant to ask about it here for the same reason you just listed. I don't know where to get one to be honest, or which one is considered the best . -Disjaukifa
I have the modbo mod chip, in my PS2, and it works , without a hitch. But look up your local laws, about modchips, and if you have the possibility of driving to another state , if your own state is punishing people for modding their PS2, then look it up on the internet to check out where there are shops to get your PS2 modded. But about the PSX, well I have a chipped PSX, but I have no clue what modchip it is. But the modbo mod chip works, and I actually also think, that it can accept your own code too. But some body with more knowledge than in that area can probably tell you more than on that issue. But with the PSX, you can also do the swap disc trick, which I know there are lots of youtube videos with. But if you have a blue PSX debugger, then do NOT use the swap disc trick. Since if I remember correctly, then the debugger can already read CDr (some body correct me if I am wrong), but also as Alchy said, emulator is also a good thing as a start. If your pc is powerful enough to run a PSX emulator.
Playstation Laser Hi, i've changed a few lasers in the past, SCPH-1000 - 3500 (Early models very poor laser, don't bother). SCPH-5000 - 5903 (Revised laser assembly, much improved, metal rack for gears and harder plastics, will fit 1000's with only minor mods..(power cable swap from 1000, some minor plastic trimming). SCPH-7000 - 7503 (Revised CD-ROM controllers.. less components, cheaper to produce in other words, but very reliable laser, same as 5000's you need your original power cable and some minor plastic trimming, but the fit and work fine. SCPH-9000 - 9003 (Revised CD-ROM, better quality laser? Looks identical fitting to 7000's, cant' say for sure, but on par with the 7000's. Have not installed this version so i cant say. Sorry. SCPH-100 - 103 (Although this is the smaller heavily revised "PSOne", the laser is still pretty much unchanged, the only thing on these lasers, is you have to replace the whole plastic cover with yours, for it to fit your case, they only clip on and are very easy to do, these last lasers are very tough, and of course much newer. EvilBay has plenty of later 100's for around £10, some with free shipping, usually with a few games too.. These work great, my DTL-1000 has a nice fresh supply of lasers for a few years to come.. I can not get any of my Playstation 1's to read CD-RW, chipped pal .............no DTL-1000................no chipped 5500...........no swap trick 1002........no CD-R's on the other hand, boot fine on them ALL. hope this helps. Few Pics here. http://www.assemblergames.com/forums/showthread.php?t=22596
Yeah unfortunately my computer are all Macs, I wonder if I can run PSX Emulator in a VirtualMachine . . . not ideal but it might work. Or I just need to find a linux based PSX Emulator and hope they have the source code and can just build it from scratch on my Mac. I had to do that for PSXSDK, it took me over a day but I finally figured it out and got it working. I do know of two emulators for Mac so I might give those a try and see if I can get them to work. -Disjaukifa
This post should be made into a sticky, that is WONDERFUL information, thank you for taking the time to write it all up, but I do have a couple of questions for you about it though. Are you saying the whole laser/sled assembly from a SCPH-100 series will fit into the DTL debugger systems with just a little bit of modifications or are you just talking about the laser itself? Also would you recommend the 5000 series laser and tray for the DTL-H100X series if but more likely when I need to replace it? Again thank you so much for the information, you have no idea just how helpful it is! -Disjaukifa
No joke, I literally just download it and was unpacking it to see if I could get it working! The only thing I have noticed is I need to find a bios and it looks like it will only read from CDs, you can't load from an image of the game. Does anyone know the best bios to use with a PSX emulator? Or do I just need to experiment and find one that works well with my setup? -Disjaukfia
