This is a very informative discussion , this is good to know in case I go traveling. If your just visiting do you say just visiting?
Ofcourse, i think the business about girlfriends is just that if your relying on staying in someone else house then saying your staying at your girlfriends is going to make it more likely that there is a chance you could get kicked out. If you have a hotel paid for and cash i see no reason why saying you are here to visit your girlfriend would be a problem.
Right, it was the staff that were of other races, not the detainees. Make sure of what I have said before you jump to conclusions. I was polite to everyone, regardless of race, religion, or nationality. I had several people make comment on how polite I was. If they were UK citizens, they weren't originally UK citizens. A majority of the time, I was the only person in the room I was in. As someone said earlier in the topic, 300 pound wasn't enough to survive. Well, I had a place to stay, I had already personally confirmed that with her family. I'm not racist at all, I was just making a point that half the staff were of other nationalities. Half of them couldn't even speak proper English. Don't know about you, but I'd assume that you should have to be able to speak English properly before getting a job that has anything to do with immigration. Sorry if I had offended anyone with my comment, I know that could have been perceived as racist and ignorant, that wasn't my intention. I'm white just incase anyone here wants to know. Her family had even said I would have a place to stay, that they would not kick me out, and her mother had said if I wasn't back at the airport on the 19th, they could just arrest her. They had made it pretty clear that I wasn't getting kicked out of their home. "Yeah once i got to that comment i was 100% sure they were 100% correct in sending him back." Right, you were 100% they were 100% correct in sending me back because you had assumed I was racist or rude with them, now isn't that ignorant of you.. I was polite to every single person I came across, and I answered all questions properly. I will be obtaining a Visa, I will save up over 1,000 GBP, and will establish proper ties to my country of origin. Now then, anyone else have any wrongful assumptions to make?
I had filled out a form on the plane before I had left it and handed it to the immigration officer along with my passport. Next time, I'm going to just obtain a visa, and be like "We split apart, however we're just friends" and just state I'm there to visit friends. I have everyone's contact information on hand as well. I'll also bring papers providing proof as to why I have reasons to return to the United States. I had the address of where I would be staying on me, and a lot of other information. I'll be going back to the UK on a visa eventually, with all the proper paper work all the proof, so they can't possibly have a reason to deny me. As I have said before, I'm sorry for my comment which can be perceived as racist. I understand people settle in other countries, but eventually the next generations of said family learns to speak proper English, and loses the accent of their family's country of origin. The people did not have an English accent, they were staff of immigration, and were Indian. I'm not racist at all, I have friends of many races. I just find it funny that people that aren't full citizens or haven't been citizens for a long period of time are in a line of work. Can everyone stop with the suing comments? That wont do shit, and I'm fully aware of that. All I can do now is get all the information, get a visa, and play my cards right. EDIT: Last time I checked, aren't a lot of English people upset that so many people from different countries are trying to live there? Namely people from Asian countries?
Actually no, if your grandfather spoke with an accent, your father would probably as well by proxy of learning to talk from him, and so on. There's a guy in work, probably 4-5 generations English and he still has a really strong Pakistani accent. There's also a woman in work, lived in Wales since she was 18, she is now 60-odd and still has the strongest Scottish accent you could ever experience, makes Billy Connolley sound like Hugh Grant. The only English people worried about "The Asians" are Daily Mail readers. If we stopped any and all foreigners from entering and naturalizing here, we would have no doctors, dentists, programmers, engineers, etc. Fact is, the UK only survives due to the fact that these people are happy to uproot and move here because most native British are pig ignorant and want everything handed to them on a plate. No fucker seems to want to make an effort anymore.
Well, if for some reason in the future I decide to go to England, I wouldn't expect anything to be handed to me. I'm highly interested in entering the medical field. I know the UK is in need of more medical staff anyways~
I suffered similar treatment visiting the USA once, except they didn't deport me. The only reason was that I had a permanent job in the UK. The reason I received such an unfriendly welcome was that I had visited multiple times that year, due to my then girlfriend's father being ill. Now I live here and I am married, but immigration sucks. You cannot sue. It is up to the immigration officers whether they allow you to enter or not. But your treatment does not sound logical to me, so maybe you can clear up a few questions I have: How often have you visited the UK, or which other countries have you visited recently? Did you tell the first immigration officer you had only met on the net? Did you take a large amount of luggage? What did you say to the first customs officer? I have never seen them do more that ask you how long you are visiting and the reason for your visit on the UK customs counter. It seems odd to me you went through all that without other reasons. Especially since you have the visa waiver program. I don't recommend visiting any time soon either. Once you are deported on a visa waiver, you'll have a hell of a time getting in. You'd be best applying for a tourist visa. Sorry to hear you had such a bad experience. The UK is a great place, culturally diverse (as you discovered in the immigration process) and usually people are very pleasant.
Remember the Indian sounding staff may have been employees of an Asian airline. Also that the US has asked the UK to increase its airport controls fairly recently. As others have stated you probably should have considered its not as easy to enter countries as it used to be considering 9/11 etc - at least you'll know for next time eh.
To make this clear, I wasn't deported. I was only denied entry and removed, they're completely two different things. If I were deported, I wouldn't be allowed back in the country. It was election day there, things were hectic, high security, and I guess the officers just wanted to leave and vote. The original officer had even left that night and a new one had been assigned to my case. Go figure. This was the first country I had visited outside of the United States. This was the first time I had visited this country. All I brought with me was my backpack containing a couple books and such, gum, etc, and my main luggage that was on the plane containing my clothing and such. A majority of the people were quite pleasant to me, including the Indians and people of other races. It was just the immigration officers that were complete assholes to me. I believe the guy was just on a power-trip because my family in the States had gotten rude with him once he was rude with them. The point is, I did have reason to come back to the US, I had enough money to last me the 2 week despite what other members here have said, and this was my first physical meeting with my girlfriend. I'm going to continue to pursue a relationship with her, I am talking with her on Skype at this very moment. My next step will be obtain a job, contact the embassy, apply for a Visa, and go back to visit her. If I have to obtain a lawyer to help me draw everything up and tell me what I can say and not say, I will. I'm quite intent on visiting her, I'll do it one way or another.
Although we've spoken over cam and mic, I can tell you she's worth it. Not to mention, after all her family went through to try to help me out during this, it just shows me even more she's worth it. If anything at all, this situation has only strengthened our bond, and created a bond between me and her family. They're quite wonderful people, and even after all this trouble, I will go back for her. The only reason I haven't attempted bringing her to the States is that she has an anxiety disorder and would not do well on a plane at all. It's actually probably pretty surprising that she even got use to talking to me, buy hey, I suppose we're just compatible. I will see her and be with her no matter what route I have to take. I will say this, and I will stick to it, you will never come across an American as stubborn as I am. Once I make a decision, I will follow through even if it kills me.
Well said.... well said. I've had first hand experience with UK immigration, dealing with a number of visa applications over a period of years. - The system is a mess and UK immigration officers are scum. The guidelines they use to operate are vague (at best) and it's nothing more than a lottery - If you annoy just one person (even slightly) they will gang up together (just like a mob) and come down hard on you, regardless if you are in the right. Wielding their power over you is their idea of fun - it is the ONLY joy in their sad, pathetic lives. - Try doing their job, day in, day out, and you will end up the same as them... unless the system is completely overhauled it will not change. They ARE the system - they need to change, not us. Btw/ The UK is not "stuffed full of immigrants" as one poster said, they make up less than 4% of the population. This is just tabloid bullshit designed to sell papers and stir up anger... unfortunately, this ill-informed attitude is rife in England and one of the many reasons why the UK sucks. Truth is, immigrants have a hard enough time in the UK as it is... of course, heaven help us if we 'dare' accuse the the remaining 96% of being responsible for the things that go wrong! Sadly, this is how it is - this IS England.... and just one of the many reasons why I left two years ago. Complaining will not get you anywhere - they stick together and cover themselves - just don't bother. I advise meeting in a neutral country, you'll enjoy it a lot more.
I wonder if immigration has a quota to fill to show that their measures against illegal immigration are working. Just thinking, they might have needed someone of (even slightly) questionable intent to make their numbers for the week. Sounds crazy, but sometimes these systems are backwards.
I think people are overreacting ever so slightly. Just because your not from a 3rd world country doesn't mean you shouldn't have to meet certain criterium. Had he come on here and said he was from somewhere in Africa, Brazil or china then most of you would of been much more suspicious of his intentions.
Well, I've never heard of an American trying to illegally immigrate to the United Kingdom on 310 pound. That just sounds stupid.
Balorawn, in favour of your case, ie, in meeting "an internet friend with only 10 dollars in her pocket" please watch this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HFQ2XWfWMpU&feature=related if she got in, you deserved to get in too. Next time carry a copy of this video, perhaps it will teach them to follow precedent PS: I searched long and hard and had to endure many hours of bureaucratic drama to find this.
I have been denied entry to 3th world countries while being european/caucasian and with enough money in my pocket, maybe that makes you feel better? There is never a garantee to enter a country, and talking about being treated like shit.. the worst treatment I experianced was with the US and Israeli immigrations (even before 911 btw) And to come back on your illigal US citizen in UK, I actually watch that border control show alot (usally the australia edition) and I can tell you quite some US citizens show up there with no money/plans and probably to work/stay there illigally.
