Look at that! I was right on the money with my first post just didn't get the year.

I've always wondered what the Dreamcast with a 3DFX graphics adaptor would have been like. Has any information ever be released about the power of the 3DFX chip Sega was planning to put in before they went with the PowerVR2 chipset?

Some derivative of Voodoo 2/Banshee/Banshee 2 (i.e. Voodoo 3). Never did get a straight answer to the question, to be fair.

It was said that NEC may have copied some of 3Dfx ideas. If true then the fact that this game will run on a standard Dreamcast with very little changed to the code pretty much proves it

I'm not sure. From what I know it should be possible but I'll have to clarify that with the person who supplied the video.

Apparently whatever chip it was, it had 2 TMUs

Voodoo had 2 TMUs (total of 3 seperate chips: one PixelFX2 + two TexelFX2s)
Banshee had one TMU on its single chip
Banshee 2 /Voodoo3 had 2 TMUs on its single chip.

Voodoo3(Banshee2) was released in early 1999. It's possible the Sega Black Belt used a derivative of this, an early Voodoo3/Banshee2.

From what I remember the tile-based rendering used in the PowerVR architecture was pretty different from what 3DFX were doing. Either way, the chips chosen for the Dreamcast were the result of Sega of Japan going with Japanese manufacturers (NEC and Hitachi), from what I remember of reading about back in the day. Is that correct?

Even though a next generation solution powered by 3DFX technology may have been superior in performance, management at Sega of Japan were always going to favour their own design (featuring the PowerVR chipset) as the whole company was experiencing something of a power shift from US control. As leaders of the hardware design team, Hayao Nakayama and Hideki Sato were in a position to manipulate things for their own gain - in fact, wasn't the president of NEC a known golfing buddy of theirs? While this might seem a little trivial, the concept of loyalty goes a long way in Japan... and perhaps this may help to explain why Sega has made some rather unobvious business decisions over the years!
